Activities at The Cedars Bourne Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Helen Hudson

Activities Coordinator

Hello. I’m Helen, the Activities Coordinator at The Cedars. I joined the team in 2021 and I have lots of skills that I can use to create an interesting and varied programme of activities, events and celebrations for residents to enjoy. I am a qualified holistic therapist and offer an holistic approach to activities in the home, I love creating new activities that our residents enjoy, taking residents out on day trips and promoting wellbeing through lots of different activities. When I am not at work I love playing my clarinet, crocheting and art - I use all of these in my role.

Life at The Cedars Bourne Care Home

Putting a little Oomph into our day

Residents at The Cedars enjoy their Oomph sessions. These are fun physical activities that are great for increasing activity levels and maintaining or improving mobility. Oomph activities can be performed from armchairs, wheelchairs or standing up. We use lots of music and props, such as pompoms, scarves and rattles. Anne and Jo really enjoy a little Oomph.

Happy Easter!

On Easter Sunday we surprised residents of The Cedars with Easter gift bags filled with chocolate goodies. Jo said it was a lovely treat and she felt so spoiled. Anne laughed at how cute the chocolate bunny looked with glasses on. Bill couldn’t wait to see what was in his bag as he has a sweet tooth and likes to keep a drawer full of treats. Kathleen was excited to peer into her bag and Mary counted the contents of her bag. Happy Easter, everyone!

Celebrating Doris Day

We had a fabulous time at The Cedars on April 3rd - Doris Day’s birthday. We celebrated her life with a talk by Hayley from our Activities Team, and residents enjoyed receiving a factsheet all about her. We watched her top 10 music videos and sang along to the ones we remembered, especially those from Calamity Jane. Whip Crack Away!

Easter Chicks at The Cedars

Residents at The Cedars in Bourne have had a wonderful time thanks to their Happy Chicks. On 22 March we received 10 eggs and all the equipment we needed. After a few days of excited anticipation we were lucky to see all of them hatch and grow. We could see them getting bigger every day and they have now returned to The Happy Chick Company which promises ethical animal welfare standards and rehoming practices. Jean, Peggy and all our residents absolutely loved them, commenting on how cute and placid they were, and we have all enjoyed holding them. We missed out on having chicks last year due to the start of the pandemic but this year they are a symbol of new beginnings and a brighter future for everyone.

Memories of Mary Quant

Jo and other residents at The Cedars enjoyed a fascinating talk via Zoom by the V&A museum of Dundee. We saw items from their Mary Quant exhibition and heard about her life and contribution to the style of the 1960s. We laughed as we shared memories of our favourite outfits of that time, and recalled how we loved our bobbed hair, miniskirts and the music.

Easter Bonnet Competition

At The Cedars we hold our own in-house Easter bonnet competition every year. Jean, Anne and other residents decorated their own hats and enjoyed wearing them on the sunniest day of the year so far. The winner received an Easter hamper full of treats.
