Activities at Lucerne House Care Home

At Lucerne House our person-centred activity programme has been tailored to suit the residents living in our home. It is constantly developing due to the direct feedback from our residents and enables them to take part in existing hobbies and new tasks that aim to stimulate creativity, intellect, physical ability and improve well being. With music groups, pub outings, cooking, gardening, one to one time, entertainers, quiz's, bingo and more, there is never a shortage of things to do.

We also have external providers who visit the home. We have Rachel Sherring who provides Yoga Sessions, Lorrain Christopher who is available every Wednesday and Thursday for hair appointments in our on site salon, Sharon Rees who visits on a Wednesday to provide massage therapy sessions in the comfort of your chair and regular Church Services which do include a monthly Holy Communion. We are always open to new suggestions, so if you do have any, our activities team will always be happy to listen.

Alex Petersen

Activities Coordinator

I have been at Lucerne House since November 2011. I started in the kitchen before moving to the Activities Team. I have a background in music and theatre and was very happy to be able to share this with residents in the home. After a short while, I was promoted to Head of Activities, and earned my NAPA level 2 qualification in Activity Provision.

In the role of Head of Activities, I am focused on ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy existing hobbies and interests, but also pursue new avenues of stimulation and activity. I am always looking to bring new experiences and means of engagement to the home, be that through massage therapy, yoga, engaging with the local community or many other things. At Lucerne House, our person-centred approach allows us to make every resident feel valued and comfortable enough to express themselves however they see fit.

My goal is to ensure that every person living at Lucerne House feels confident enough to make independent decisions and that each of them have a robust choice of activities and interests to engage with. I am always open to suggestions, so if you do have any, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Memory Café Helper

Memory Café Helper

In October, we were pleased to have some extra help in our Memory Café. Jacob Petersen, son of Alex Petersen (Head of Activities) and Hailei Petersen (Care Practitioner), popped on a name badge and came along to assist with handing out biscuits and cakes to those who attended our café.

Everyone remarked on how nice it was to have Jacob in attendance and said he really lifted the mood. He also read some of his books with the group, who were more than happy to listen and also help him with some of the more tricky words.

Jacob has said he would like to attend the next Café, as he really enjoyed working with mummy and daddy, reading with the group and helping out. If you would like to come along to our Memory Café, it runs on every third Saturday of each month.

Rising to the Occasion

Rising to the Occasion

We would like to thank everybody who came and supported our second bake sale at Lucerne House. Residents and staff had a fantastic but busy week, baking many cakes in preparation for the big day and decorating them too. With your support, residents have raised £152, which will be donated to the MS Society.

Bird House

Bird House

Residents had a great time in our most recent woodworking session sanding, crafting and painting bird houses. They enjoyed getting creative, forming new relationships through social inclusion and having a lot of fun in the process.

The project has been ongoing for a few weeks and we look forward to placing our newly built bird houses around the grounds in the near future.

At Lucerne House, we always look for ways to be creative and promote social inclusion. We have many great projects in the pipe line, so do look out for those in the upcoming events section of our website.

If you fancy helping out, or if you would like to meet new people, please feel free to drop in.

A Game of Words

A Game of Words

On Friday 24th August, our newly-formed word games team set off to face one of our sister homes, Mount Tryon, in a game of Scrabble. We were warmly welcomed by them when we arrived, who were ready and waiting to compete.

Mount Tryon is situated in Torquay and the fantastic team down there made us feel more than welcome, allowing us to have a tour of their wonderful home and also letting us seamlessly integrate with their residents and staff.

This is to be the first in a series of word-based games that should enable us to make new friends, challenge our problem-solving and intellectual abilities and, most importantly, have fun. Game 1 went to Lucerne House, with the next fixture set for 3:00 p.m. on Monday September 24th, when we will be having a game of Countdown.

If you would like to join us or just come and cheer us on, then do stop by Lucerne House, where we will be more than happy to welcome you.
