Activities at Lucerne House Care Home

At Lucerne House our person-centred activity programme has been tailored to suit the residents living in our home. It is constantly developing due to the direct feedback from our residents and enables them to take part in existing hobbies and new tasks that aim to stimulate creativity, intellect, physical ability and improve well being. With music groups, pub outings, cooking, gardening, one to one time, entertainers, quiz's, bingo and more, there is never a shortage of things to do.

We also have external providers who visit the home. We have Rachel Sherring who provides Yoga Sessions, Lorrain Christopher who is available every Wednesday and Thursday for hair appointments in our on site salon, Sharon Rees who visits on a Wednesday to provide massage therapy sessions in the comfort of your chair and regular Church Services which do include a monthly Holy Communion. We are always open to new suggestions, so if you do have any, our activities team will always be happy to listen.

Alex Petersen

Activities Coordinator

I have been at Lucerne House since November 2011. I started in the kitchen before moving to the Activities Team. I have a background in music and theatre and was very happy to be able to share this with residents in the home. After a short while, I was promoted to Head of Activities, and earned my NAPA level 2 qualification in Activity Provision.

In the role of Head of Activities, I am focused on ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy existing hobbies and interests, but also pursue new avenues of stimulation and activity. I am always looking to bring new experiences and means of engagement to the home, be that through massage therapy, yoga, engaging with the local community or many other things. At Lucerne House, our person-centred approach allows us to make every resident feel valued and comfortable enough to express themselves however they see fit.

My goal is to ensure that every person living at Lucerne House feels confident enough to make independent decisions and that each of them have a robust choice of activities and interests to engage with. I am always open to suggestions, so if you do have any, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Life at Lucerne House Care Home

Fireworks Night

We started the festive season with a bang at our fireworks night. Residents got together for hot dogs and buffet style food before enjoying a fantastic firework display.

Halloween at Lucerne

We have had a great time over the Halloween period at Lucerne House. Residents have been engaging in Halloween crafts, pumpkin carving and our Halloween party. Staff got in on the act too by dressing up an all sorts of wonderful and creative outfits.

We are now looking forward to our fireworks display and, of course, Christmas, which is right around the corner. With many events and activities planned for the festive season, we can’t wait to share them all with you.

Reading Project

There is a real buzz of excitement at Lucerne House at the moment with anticipation of our new reading project being completed. Earlier this year our team created a music video which is still available to view on the Barchester Facebook page.

The video was so popular there was outcry to create something else and this reading project was just the ticket. Residents are being supported to take on different roles in the children’s book “The Gruffalo”. We will be recording the different interpretations of the characters and adding this to the illustrations from the wonderful book.

Once completed we hope we can share this far and wide with our local community, schools, nurseries and on social media platform’s. Keep checking back here and on the Barchester Facebook page for updates and for other wonderful stories from our other Barchester Homes.

Halloween Crafts

Residents at Lucerne House have had a great time getting ready for our Halloween events. During our recent arts & crafts session, residents have been creating Halloween decorations by recycling milk bottles and painting their own Jack-O’-Lantern designs on them. These will then be displayed with battery operated tea lights inside at our Halloween party at the end of the month.

World Health Week

We have had a great time marking World Health Week at Lucerne House. Residents and staff have all been engaging in activities that promote healthy lifestyles.

We started the week with a reminiscence and healthy snacks morning, where the conversation soon turned towards the foods that were available when our residents were growing up.

Later in the week, many of our residents joined a 'Movement for Health' cycling group, which saw our oldest resident, at 101 years old, out-cycle everyone else; and finally, at the end of the week, we finished with a healthy treats trolley, which travelled around the home.

Everyone at Lucerne has really enjoyed engaging in these events.

Virtual Yoga

We were delighted to welcome back Rachel Sherring, our yoga instructor via a virtual session. Rachel donned her best purple wig and delivered an excellent session.

Staff and residents were stretching, flexing and having a good laugh, as well as taking part in a music trivia quiz with the help of an Amazon Alexa.
