Activities at Lucerne House Care Home

At Lucerne House our person-centred activity programme has been tailored to suit the residents living in our home. It is constantly developing due to the direct feedback from our residents and enables them to take part in existing hobbies and new tasks that aim to stimulate creativity, intellect, physical ability and improve well being. With music groups, pub outings, cooking, gardening, one to one time, entertainers, quiz's, bingo and more, there is never a shortage of things to do.

We also have external providers who visit the home. We have Rachel Sherring who provides Yoga Sessions, Lorrain Christopher who is available every Wednesday and Thursday for hair appointments in our on site salon, Sharon Rees who visits on a Wednesday to provide massage therapy sessions in the comfort of your chair and regular Church Services which do include a monthly Holy Communion. We are always open to new suggestions, so if you do have any, our activities team will always be happy to listen.

Alex Petersen

Activities Coordinator

I have been at Lucerne House since November 2011. I started in the kitchen before moving to the Activities Team. I have a background in music and theatre and was very happy to be able to share this with residents in the home. After a short while, I was promoted to Head of Activities, and earned my NAPA level 2 qualification in Activity Provision.

In the role of Head of Activities, I am focused on ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy existing hobbies and interests, but also pursue new avenues of stimulation and activity. I am always looking to bring new experiences and means of engagement to the home, be that through massage therapy, yoga, engaging with the local community or many other things. At Lucerne House, our person-centred approach allows us to make every resident feel valued and comfortable enough to express themselves however they see fit.

My goal is to ensure that every person living at Lucerne House feels confident enough to make independent decisions and that each of them have a robust choice of activities and interests to engage with. I am always open to suggestions, so if you do have any, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Life at Lucerne House Care Home

Arts & Crafts Afternoon

We are very proud to be close with our community. We have seen so many wonderful letters and pictures sent to us, which has really brought our spirits up in these very trying times.

Many children and families in the village have been painting and displaying rainbows in their windows to spread a bit of joy. We were so inspired by these wonderful designs and ideas that we have been painting rainbows to display in our residents' windows and communal areas.

We look forward to doing more of this in the weeks to come, so if you are passing on your way to work, the shops or on your daily exercise then do look out for them.

Community Support

At Lucerne House we feel so blessed to have such an amazing support network from our community with the local church, interest groups and community all supporting us and it is now that the support we have received has shined brighter than ever.

As the effects of the global pandemic sweep through cities and communities we have been receiving some wonderful contact. Lucy Williams, Alphington Children & Families Lead worker who runs local groups for parents and toddlers among other things had the idea to start a pen pal scheme with our residents. It has been a wonderful success with many letters and pictures from children in the groups and from the local primary school.

A Facebook page called “Lovely Lucerne” which was created by Jo Willmot, wife of Lucerne House’ head chef Simon Willmot has been a great platform to receive daily updates, letters, pictures, videos and even singing. The efforts and extra steps that people have gone to is extraordinary and we are forever grateful. We look forward to more communication, pictures and videos in the coming weeks.

Sport Relief

We had a fantastic time at Lucerne House for Sport Relief day, residents, relatives and staff have all got into the spirit of the day. Everyone helped and contributed using our static cycle machine and we are very proud to have exceeded our target distance. Thank you to everyone who helped and supported the event.

Pancake Day

We had a great time on Pancake Day at Lucerne House. The day started with a singsong and social. We then met for our knit and natter group in the afternoon, which will now be held on the first Tuesday of each month; and to finish the day, we had our pancakes. Residents were able to create all sorts of flavours and have remarked on how tasty they were

Knit and Natter Club

This month we have started a Knit & Natter group in our Memory Lane community at Lucerne House. Residents, relatives and staff all got together to have a laugh and a chat whilst knitting various items. Alex Petersen, Head of Activities was very pleased with the support from our relatives and has expressed a special thanks to Anne who taught him how to cast on and how to knit.

Linda, a relative at our home has been knitting wool cupcakes which everyone agreed were really good. Everyone who attended had a lovely time and we are looking to make this a regular event in the coming weeks and months. Look at our upcoming events section for more information on this and if you would like to join us then do pop in.

Great British Care Awards Regional Winner

Everyone at Lucerne would like to congratulate Alex Petersen, Head of Activities, on winning the Regional Great British Care award in the Care Home Activity Organiser category in 2019.

Alex said it was a great surprise and honour to be recognised for his work within the activities role/sector and commended his team for without them he would not have been able to achieve this. Alex will now go on to the National Great British Care awards which will be held in March 2020. We all wish him the best of luck
