Activities at Harper Fields Care Home

There is always something to do here at Harper Fields and always someone to assist the residents in any activity they wish to take part in. We have entertainers come into the home to sing and play instruments on a weekly basis, as well as visits from PAT dogs, hairdressers, massage therapists and nail technicians to pamper those who live here. Residents' spiritual needs are taken into account at Harper Fields; we have regular services from the Catholic and Methodist church, in addition to the Church of England, and for our non-religious residents, we have a weekly calming and peaceful ‘mindfulness and meditation group,’ which is very popular, especially for those living with dementia. Residents often like to attend cinema evenings to watch their favourite films on the big screen (complete with sweets and popcorn), or develop new skills at our computer classes, where they can learn how to Skype their families in other countries. Our activities are tailored to suit the individual interests and capabilities of residents and our specialised equipment enables those we support to enjoy everything we have to offer.

Coventry transport museum

Today we had a minibus trip to Coventry, where we enjoyed walking around the transport museum, the residents loved to reminisce about Coventry throughout the years, through pictures and memorabilia. Our residents remembered riding on the old pushbikes and motorcycles, one resident even recalled riding in the side car of a motor bike, what a squeal she let out when she saw it! We also saw the bus that was used when Coventry city won the FA cup in 1987 another resident was in the city centre cheering the team on when they brought the cup home, what a fantastic memory for him!

We had a tasty picnic made by our talented chef for lunch, then afterwards we went through an old air raid shelter complete with flashing lights and sirens, on the way home we reminisced about years gone by, the museum bought so many memories back for everyone!

Melbicks garden centre

A trip to Melbicks with afternoon tea, fresh scones with jam and cream and a pot of Earl grey with stunning views were all part of today’s outing and boy was it delicious! We then picked up some lovely bright seeds, pots and compost ready to start this year’s spring gardening group. We also visited the aquarium at Melbicks which was lovely as the fish are so brightly coloured and calming to watch.

Sporting memories

We took a trip to the Xcel leisure centre in Coventry today for a trip down ‘Sporting memory lane’. We watched film clips of Coventry’s old sports grounds which included Brandon stadium, Courtaulds ground, Coundon road and Highfield road reminiscing about sports such as Speedway, cricket, rugby and football. We met several ex sportsmen and women including David Moorcroft OBE the world record holder for the 5000 meters. The residents were able to hold the Olympic torch from 1949 which was a really special treat. We had a delicious lunch of pie and mash serves by the lovely staff at Xcel. What a fantastic day we have had!

Christmas at the British Legion

The Royal British legion club in Berkswell invited Harper Fields residents for Christmas lunch and entertainment. We were served a traditional Christmas lunch with all the trimmings, by the end we were fit to burst. After pulling our Christmas crackers, we were entertained by a lovely lady singer. There was dancing and singing all afternoon. We had a really super time.  Thank you to all at The British Legion Club in Berkswell for making us feel so welcome.

Partying at 100

Here at Harper Fields, we made a wish come true. Our lovely resident turned 100 and when asked what wish she wanted, her answer was a party, hence we made it come true.

We went all out with the red carpet, the sashes, table and chair covers. We even had a cake stand, with our kitchen making a big spread for the families and friends who came to celebrate with her. Hip, hip, hooray!
