"I selected a care home or my dads respite with great care! It must be dementia friendly, have high standards of care and offer lots of activities every day! Attending events beforehand helped me choose Harper Fields. Staff are friendly and considerate. Facilities are excellent. Dads bedroom window overlooked a garden and very clean and was roomy! Corridors are wide, uncluttered and light (most of all airy). Day rooms offer comfortable seating and views to the gardens. Following dads respite he was happy to see me but also seemed at home at Harper Fields. Also all his clothes were clean and, ready for packing which is a blessing when returning home! We will be booking further respite at Harper Fields."

"My dad spent two weeks at Harper Fields in March and was well cared for and he had an enjoyable stay. Knowing that he receives excellent care when he stays at Harper Fields means that my husband and I can go away without worrying about his welfare. The staff always make him feel welcome and valued."

"My mother has been at the home for 14 months now, and there has been a great deal of instability during that time. There is now a new manager (the third) who does seem to be making a difference to a home that has previously failed to deliver on its promises, and has had a huge turn over of staff during this time. There have been a number of occasions when my mother has not been treated as they promise in their brochures. My review is over the period of time my mother as been in home the staff and manager have improved hence my rating below."

"Mum is well cared for, every effort is made to make her comfortable and involved in the life of the home. Following her severe stroke a year and a half ago. The care staff get mum out of bed and her room regularly, something never attempted by the previous home she was in. I am exceptionally grateful for their effort to improve mums quality of life."

"Care has been variable. At present I am pleased after 2 and a half years that mum's needs are being met, mostly. Suitable staffing levels have been a problem, but in recent months, mum's care has improved greatly (due to loss of "bank" staff). Current staff show dedication and enthusiasm resulting in a caring atmosphere. Activities being"poor" relates to the fact that mum is deaf and blind and doesn't like to join in."

"My mother was moved to Harper Field a year ago after an unhappy experience in a different home where she seemed to spend more time in the local hospital. In her new home she is cared for my understanding and helpful staff who genuinely like her and her quirky little ways. There has been only one hospital visit and done with such care and sensitivity both to my and my mother thank you, that it was painless. I believe my mother is as happy as she can be given that she has dementia."

"Windsor ward staff are wonderful, very caring and thoughtful. It is a home from home as much as a dementia unit can be. Activities are superb, especially the theatre outings and visits to many local places. The entertainers who come in regularly are again superb."

"When mum first moved to the home she was able to go out on trips which she thoroughly enjoyed. The staff always made sure she went out regularly. She has deteriorated over time and now can seldom be persuaded to leave her room, but the staff are in and out all the time helping her to drink enough and assisting her with eating and keeping her clean. I have found the staff to be really kind and caring with a great attitude."

"Overhaul pleased, is expensive but that doesn't worry me as mum can afford it, but when asked by other people they are gob smacked at the cost. The only other point is I wish you could keep the same staff looking after mum as change isn't good later in life. Not moving to another care home but different place in the same care home."

"My aunt is receiving "end of life" care which has been excellent. She didn't want to go into hospital as they would not be able to care or provide anything that the home couldn't. She was also much happier to be in surroundings she was familiar with."

"My mother was very reluctant to give up her home and enter a care home. However she now thinks it was a good choice. She still obviously misses having her own home but she says she feels safe and all her needs are met. There is always someone to talk to - be it staff or fellow residents, so she never feels lonely."

"I am very pleased with the personal care for my mother - the attention to her medical and other needs, social care, e.g. bed movement, feeding, toileting etc. We have open access and the care home helped us to recently celebrate her birthday. I regularly talk to her care staff and managers and continue to fully appreciate all of the support provided by the home."

"My mother-in-law has advanced dementia. In her previous care home, she had given up. She was lonely, she was confused, anxious and wanted to die. Her behaviour was labelled as 'challenging' and the staff found her difficult to deal with. We felt lost and utterly hopeless. Then we found Harper Fields and the change for my mother in law has been profoundly positive. Harper Fields give her friendship, support and a quality of life we never thought possible. She goes swimming, on trips to the theatre and routinely trounces the other residents at skittles. She has made friends - with residents and carers - who genuinely seem to love her and like having her around. She is valued and cared for. The atmosphere is warm and genuine. She may live her life in the moment, but that moment is generally a happy one. Now, when we say goodbye at the end of a visit, she doesn't cling to us and cry. She hugs us warmly, then turns around and goes back to have a cuppa with her friends."

"I have always found Harper Fields care home in the four years I have been here looking after my husband a very warm, friendly place. It's like you are walking into your own home and family. The carers are so hard working wish they could have more help. Everyone works hard trying to look after our loved ones at the very best of their ability. They are all very professional in whatever role they from the chef to the gardeners who keep the garden's so beautiful and a pleasure to go and sit in or walk in. If you have to be somewhere make it Harper Fields."

"My husband has been in "Memory Lane " unit at Harper Fields for almost 12 months suffering from Parkinson's and Dementia. My family and I have been more than satisfied with the care and support he has been provided with. The staff are all most caring and kind and nothing is too much trouble. All the residents are treated with dignity and respect and the whole atmosphere of the home is most friendly."

"The care home has an institutionalised feel. Whilst early on in my mothers care the staff were attentive in ensuring any buzzers were answered quickly, once she had become an established resident the level of care dropped and during meal times call buttons would not be answered for a couple of hours (due to staffing levels ). Although the building itself is suitably impressive staff have no time to engage with residents unless to service their needs as quickly as possible. During the later weeks of my mother's life she was left unattended for long periods of time - surely the home could employ some unskilled staff to simply take time with residents treating them like people, reading to them, listening to their stories, playing board games, engaging in debate etc.? Unfortunately, the 'care ' has become functional rather than emotional as time means money to the companies running care homes (as demonstrated by the fact that full charge is made up to 2 weeks after death)."

"Very impressed with the nurses, carers, events organisers and managers, Very caring. Plenty of good quality food. Nothing seems too much trouble for my mum. She is treated affectionately by all the staff. The furnishings are excellent, the building is purpose built. My mum enjoys the trips by minibus in a wheelchair."

"My Aunt has been a resident at Harper Fields for Five Years, being one of the first when it opened in 2012, and during that time our family have been extremely satisfied with the care and attention she has received. The whole Harper Fields team from the management, administration, nurses, carers, activities, catering and general support staff could not be more helpful. On our regular visits, any one of the care team can give us an update on how she has been since our previous call. The most important aspect of this organisation is that the care and support provided is of a consistently high standard which gives the whole family peace of mind that any resident is well looked after. Therefore, Harper Fields comes Highly recommended."

"My mother has been a resident for 6 months and throughout this time it has always been a pleasure to visit her. The staff are always full of energy, pleasant and knowledgeable about her day, eating, moods etc. My mother although she can't articulate her feelings is always smiling and clearly happy. She enjoys joining in the many activities despite many of those being new to her. I thoroughly recommend Harper Fields. (regarding value for money it is very expensive and whilst the care is excellent one feels after 45 working years you paying tax and NI the government should make a contribution to caring for the elderly)"

"My mum has been a resident at Harper Fields for 5 months now. I visit my mum every day and have found all the staff to be excellent, showing care and compassion. The entertainment team are all exceptional showing patience and respect to all the residents and organising excellent trips and activities. The home itself has a warm, welcoming feeling and the coffee bar works really well with residents and visitors."

"My Father has been a resident here for 18 months. When he first stayed here the for respite after a hospital admission, the home was great. Call bells answered promptly and plenty of staff on hand to help. After a second hospital admission, he became a resident here and the service plummeted. Now call bells are left unanswered, especially during meal service, as there seemingly aren’t enough staff to do both. The staff are very poorly managed. No one seems to follow my Fathers care plan, we realised after finding one of his tablets on the floor, that he wasn’t being supervised when given his medication. They seem unable to adapt to my Fathers changing needs. We are currently seeking an alternative home."

"My father has been a resident at Harper Fields since May 2017. I feel that he has very good care and he's generally happy living here given the nature of his physical and emotional problems. He has involvement with good activities and is fed well. I feel reassured that he is cared for well at Haper Fields and have peace of mind."

"The care and support Mum has received in the last 2 years from everyone at Harper Fields has been truly wonderful and we are so grateful to have found a deeply loving and professional team of people, in a first-class residential environment. Mum is 101 years old, very frail and with vascular dementia but we are content in the knowledge that they understand her needs completely and show such loving kindness and respect to her every day that we have no worries at all about her care. She is dressed beautifully every day, always happy and is encouraged to take part, wherever possible, in activities both on and off-site. We never feel that she is in any way at risk since staff are always visible and on hand, and are led by excellent and supportive management. We are convinced that the love and care she receives has enabled her to reach this magnificent age. We have no hesitation in recommending Harper Fields as a truly superb care home."

"My father has had an extended time in hospital after a fall which resulted in additional complications on his discharge. He spent 11 days in another care home but we were unhappy with his care and transferred him to Barchester Harper Fields. It was the best thing we could have done! He is more alert, his medical and care needs are being met and he has staff around him who really do care. They encourage him to get out of bed and he looks clean and fresh whatever time of day we visit him. The management and administrative staff have supported our family on a difficult journey but we are sure now his short stay has become long stay. He will settle into life at Barchester Harper Fields and we know we have the confidence that his needs are being met in such a friendly supportive and attractive environment."

"Welcomed by senior staff on arrival. Pleasant room with windows overlooking the garden. Requested a quiet room and got one. Good size bathroom/shower. Carers generally good and attentive to my needs. A bit slow/late getting me up and showering (by 10.30 am). I now have colitis and it took a few days to sort a suitable diet. Overall a pleasant and satisfactory 2 week stay."

"All good, except unfortunately during mum's two-week respite stay the carer in charge pointed it out and apologised that none of her washing had been done over the two week stay period. So we had it all to do on her return. Fortunately, she had been supplied with sufficient clothes for her stay, by us. Carer in charge said normally washing would have been collected every day! This may be because we supplied a linen basket - but only for dirty washing deposition, nothing ever collected."

"My wife is looked after with care and even affection. In pre-covid times, there were always activities and entertainment, though she was reluctant to take part on occasions. "My Dad was suffering from dementia and became a resident on Windsor at Harper Fields Balsall Common. He was looked after by two members of staff in particular and all the team. The care he received was excellent and the staff all took my Dad into their hearts. Words cannot express how grateful we are for all that they did for him especially in such difficult circumstances with the Coronavirus. "I have been a regular visitor to Harper Fields since its opening 8 years ago when my lifelong friend became a resident. My cousin was also a resident for over 2 years. Throughout this period both received a very high standard of overall care. The care given initially on Warwick, and then on Windsor, as my friend's dementia progressed has been magnificent. The nursing leadership and care support on memory lane have allowed my friend to retain the dignity that could so easily have been lost. Many thanks to all involved in achieving the above."

Sometimes advised to not actually speak to our relative if it has been an upsetting time for him. This arrangement we had agreed to some time ago ad appreciate it. It is due to the excellent care in Harper Fields they are still with us. They have both had major health setbacks but the care has been kind and compassionate always and positive. "Harper Fields provide great care for my mom. The care staff are golden and the receptionists are helpful and do their best to advise, guide us concerning the situation we have not got to cope with due to our mother's dementia, meaning she must remain in a care home. "Following a knee replacement, I needed care home help for 2 weeks whilst I regained sufficient mobility to look after myself. I chose Barchester Harper Fields because of its convenient location and previous contact with a resident. "The home's ethos is one of care. All the general managers are qualified nurses by profession, which means that the resident's needs are understood and prioritised. This filters down through the care home and is apparent in all aspects. Facilities are first class with comfortable TV longes, social dining rooms, a coffee lounge and even a hairdressing salon. The atmosphere is full of kindness, happiness and care, and my mum feels happy, safe and at home. Residents relax and freely interact, even visitors don't want to leave! The food is excellent, with varied choices and menus at all mealtimes. Residents normally eat in the dining room, which encourages them to eat more, but they have the option of dining in their bedroom if they prefer to do so that day. Mum's ensuite bedroom is clean and tidy and of a good size with everything you need on hand. The staff are extremely kind and helpful, nothing is too much trouble. Events and entertaining are organised on a regular basis, now Covid restrictions are being eased. Overall, the home couldn't be any better, so thank you all so much for looking after my mum so well."

"I have just had 3 weeks of Respite care at Harper fields, Kempton unit, my second time here. I will definitely be back again. During a very difficult time of a Covid outbreak in other units, which caused a lot of disruption restricting movement within the home. All the regular staff are brilliant. Residents are nice and friendly and welcoming to all new residents. Barchester are very lucky to have these staff representing the home, as the agency staff that have had to cover for covid sickness are hit and miss in comparison to the regular staff, but essential in these difficult times. Highly recommended for the care of all that need it. Take some time to check it out."

"On Sunday, I attended a Jubilee celebration dinner with my mother arranged by the activities coordinator at the care home. The atmosphere was fantastic; the residents were all engaged with the entertainment, and the chefs, care staff, and volunteers worked tirelessly to look after the residents and their guests. I have no idea how the chefs managed to serve hot food to so many in a marquee, and they even made me a special vegan meal. Having a family member present for the Jubilee celebration meal made it more special for my mum and a memorable occasion for myself. Thank you, Barchester Harper Fields, for a truly treasured day to remember with my 96-year-old mum."

"Dad moved to Harper Fields in November 21 after his previous home was struggling to meet his needs. Whilst Dad was in the hospital, we viewed many homes, but something about Harper Fields stood out, and we knew we wanted Dad to be part of the community here. I am always kept up to date regarding my dad. The staff were fabulous getting him settled in. My dad can be quite a tricky character, and the staff are great at diverting his attention. All the staff at Harper Fields, management, nurses, carers, maintenance and more, seem to know the names of all the residents, and they always take the time to acknowledge and speak to my dad, which I can see makes him feel special. Dad's weight has become a concern over the last few weeks, and the nurse has kept me updated with a plan to manage it. It’s lovely to visit the unit, as the staff know me by name, and I equally have gotten to know some of the other residents. It’s a lovely family/community, and the events that are held are wonderful for all. A big thanks"

"Our dad has settled in really well at this care home after needing to move him from his last place, as they could not meet his needs. When I visit, I always find the staff most pleasant, and they all know my dad's name. To me, it feels like they’ve made the effort to know him. I’ve sat back and relaxed and thought about the review that I’m giving. The reason I can sit back and relax is I know my dad is at this home being looked after so much better than in his last care home, where my sister and I were in constant worry."

"I would like to express my gratitude for all the care and kindness provided by Barchester Harper Fields Care Home. The care is above and beyond expectations, and the kindness they show to my grandma, we will forever be grateful for. All the staff has made Grandma feel that welcome from the moment she moved in and very happy there to the point she calls it home. The nursing home should be acknowledged for all the hard work and individual care shown to each resident. Highly recommended."

"Lovely staff, nice communal areas. Visitors can make a drink or pay to have lunch with a resident they are visiting. The residential rooms looked really nice (though our relative did not end up in there). The downside is that the nursing rooms look much more worn and are not to the same standard as the residential side. The food on offer wasn't as good as it should be. Eg. our relative had omelette and wedges for one meal and another was fish fingers and beans. These aren't the kind of food we expected her to be provided and they aren't the kind of thing she would have wanted to eat. In my opinion, you can't call those things a meal, certainly not a balanced nutritious one. Also, an issue is that even though nursing care is supposed to be provided, they did not provide actual nursing interventions (such as fitting a cannula or catheter). We expected the level of care to be better for the cost."

"My mum suffers from dementia and moved into Harper Fields Care Home in early summer, 2022. After looking at several other care homes first, we knew Harper Fields was the perfect place for Mum the moment we stepped through the front door. Every member of staff was so welcoming and all Mum's fears of care homes disappeared from the first day. We saw an incredible transformation in her in just the first week of her being there. As Mum is medium-stage dementia the staff felt she would be best in the residential area called Kempton. Mum has been so happy, so well cared for and so entertained! She enjoys all of the activities and walks around the beautiful site. She has a lovely room and the facilities are so clean. Most of all, the Kempton staff are absolutely wonderful - so approachable, caring and friendly. For the family, myself, my brother and sister - we no longer need to worry about our mum - we know she is happy and well cared for - we can't recommend Harpers highly enough."

"On the whole our experience has been fairly satisfactory. I think there are issues where I believe staff should intervene to secure a more satisfactory outcome for the resident, such as washing, showering, etc., but this is not always done because of the rigid non-interventionist policy if assistance is declined. This means that the resident may be late in rising and perhaps missing out on a meal, or some other signal moment in the day. There could be more emphasis on activities and stimulation, but I appreciate that this can be challenging and difficult. Sometimes the resident's clothes are not always their own and this can be a little disconcerting too. I genuinely believe some staff are better than others, but I suppose this criticism could apply to any organisation or institution. Everywhere is kept clean and tidy considering the type of resident being cared for. I cannot give an absolutely glowing review as I think there are certain areas requiring further improvement."

"Another great day at Barchester Harper Fields Care Home with their annual Summer Fete. Congratulations to the manager for flawless organisation. Sadly, the weather chose not to co-operate so the event was held indoors. Plenty of stalls selling clothes, bric-a-brac, drinks - both alcoholic (by donation only) and non-alcoholic, cakes and some pretty good pulled pork baps whilst a model train stall made me yearn for my old train set. For entertainment, there was a very good country and western band whose repartee included an exceptional rendition of 'duelling banjos' on electric guitar and woodwind instruments. Participation was pleasingly very good from both residents and guest and I believe that everyone enjoyed themselves. I understand a dog show is scheduled towards the end of August so look out for further details and get the doggy shampoo ready."

"Our dad suffers from dementia and we wanted him to be cared for by people who understand the condition and are responsive to his needs. My sisters and brother have found Barchester Harper Fields Care Home to be just that place. We have worked with staff to discuss his needs and make adjustments to how we all respond and look after him. The staff have been caring and considerate, not just of Dad but of how they treat the wider family. We have a ‘go to’ member of staff that we discuss any concerns with, and this has helped as Dad’s condition alters. The nursing unit is being split into two units, enabling the nurses more time with each patient. All the staff are lovely, from the receptionists, carers, nurses and manager; even the gardeners call in for a quick chat with Dad, which he loves. The care is very good, and Dad loves the food.

"Extremely pleased with how Mum has settled into Barchester Harper Fields. All levels of staff are extremely kind and courteous; the nursing and care staff and others do go above and beyond to make sure residents are safe and happy. The food is exceptional and nutritious, and attention is given to Mum's gluten-free diet. The activities are excellent too, the activities coordinators do a fantastic job, bringing in a variety of activities for residents, and they have just hosted a great jubilee weekend of celebration which everyone enjoyed, residents, staff and family members. Thank you to everyone at Barchester Harper Fields; I do agree it is a special place; you are all doing a great job. Thank you."

"The staff and management are always very helpful and responsive. The food is poor as is the variety. Mostly it is served hot but not always, sometimes badly overcooked and inedible, breaded fish in particular. I understand that menus are on a 4-week rotation! This is certainly not the case."

They were not only enjoying themselves, but the residents as well - one big happy family. The staff - does not matter what time of year it is - give 100% care and attention. I visited my mother over Christmas and the atmosphere was electric. Mum really was relaxed and happy. Thank you again."

"Harper Fields is a warm, caring environment. Residents are treated with kindness and dignity. Activities are numerous and well planned, giving residents an opportunity to take part in things that interest them from cooking, gardening, to days out and theatre trips. There is a happy atmosphere at the home."

"My mother is in the care of Barchester Harper Fields receiving excellent care in all aspects. She is given the opportunity to be independent when possible. Her main enjoyment is being involved in the activities available and meeting other residents. All the residents are given the opportunity to participate whether bedridden or mobile. The entertainment staff are excellent providing a range of fun. My mother may not remember the next day but at the time she loves it."

"It means the world to me, the care, support and love that my auntie receives from Harper Fields. My auntie arrived at the home last October and has settled in so well with the support and care of all the staff. I know that she is well supported and cared for."

"I have been a regular visitor to Harper Fields since is opened nearly five years ago. Throughout this period, I have been impressed by both the range and quality of provision given to residents. The staff excel in terms of the attention given to each individual resident and the stability of staffing enables a continuity of care to be achieved between carer and cared for. Management are to be congratulated on having developed a "caring culture" of a very high order."

"My aunt has been a resident of Harper Fields since October 2012. Just one month after opening. During this time she has been extremely well cared for in a pleasant home with all facilities. The team of carers are well proficient in their duties. We are kept informed at every step how my aunt is doing even though we visit regularly. We receive a six monthly review with the assigned nurse on every aspect of health. The home also have relative meetings three to four times a year to explain their progress and plans for the future. Care home is highly recommended."

"My life changed forever when my husband went into the home, but after 2 1/2 years "Harper Fields" feels like my home also. It's always so welcoming and friendly, and the wonderful staff and carer's are someone I can trust, and know my husband is in very good care when I leave him and go home. Everything is so beautiful, the inside, and the beautiful gardens which I can enjoy also. Doesn't matter who ever I come across when I enter the home, there is always a smile and a hello and help and an ear if ever you needed it, which means to a lot. The new manager is a wonderful lady, best ever, her door is always open and had turned "Harper Fields" around for the best."
