Activities at Waterside Court Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Life at Waterside Court Care Home

World Alzheimer’s Day at Waterside Court

It was World Alzheimer’s Day on 21st September and Waterside Court chose to honour the day by holding our first, in-person Dementia Friends Session with family members.

Dementia Friends is an initiative created by the Alzheimer’s Society with the aim of helping communities spread awareness and understanding of dementia. The purpose of this is to ensure that those living with dementia, their loved ones and their carers are all better supported in day-to-day life.

Our Activity and Kitchen teams thoroughly enjoyed organising a lovely spread of different cheeses, nibbles, wines and soft drinks for family members so that they could truly sit back and relax whilst our Dementia Champion ran an Information Session.

Victoria Nemar, Home Services Advisor for Waterside Court and Dementia Champion for the Alzheimer’s Society, said: “It was lovely to be able to do an Information Session in person. There is an interactive element that really helps personalise the sessions when they are done face-to-face. It was also really nice to see our family members get to meet each other properly and share their own personal experiences and stories with each other. Talking about dementia and care is an important step towards getting the right support.”

If you would like to attend a Dementia Friends Session or know of anyone who requires support, please contact us on 01491 821 080.

Waterside Court's First BBQ

Residents enjoyed their first BBQ at Waterside Court, with a selection of BBQ favourites prepared by our fantastic kitchen team.

Our downstairs dining room accesses our wonderful landscaped garden, so this seemed like the perfect area to sit back and enjoy tasty burgers, sausages and other BBQ treats along with a selection of home-made salads and coleslaws.

Virtual wine tasting event, but with real wine!

Residents were treated to a spectacular virtual wine tasting event at Waterside Court, hosted by our very own Hospitality Manager, Christophe Noel.

Christophe was also joined by special guests Lee Isaac and Nick Parker from Unity Wine and Spirits. Lee talked through tasting a number of wines starting with sparkling, white, rose and red, providing information on the history of wine, how the grapes are chosen, the wine making process and the difference between old and young world wines.

Residents were eager to try all of the different wines we had on offer and the afternoon was filled with laughter and lots of interesting discussions.

Waterside Court shortlisted for luxury care home award

Barchester Healthcare’s stunning new care home, Waterside Court, located in Wallingford, has been shortlisted for a prestigious Knight Frank property award – the 2022 Luxury New Care Home Award.  The home has been chosen as a finalist out of dozens of other entries from across the entire country.

In keeping with the local area, Waterside Court is a beautifully-designed arts and crafts style property with sumptuous interiors created by Barchester’s in-house design team.  The home opened in March 2021 and offers bespoke person-centred residential, dementia and respite care in delightful surroundings for 70 residents. Amongst its fantastic facilities, Waterside Court has a café for socialising and enjoying freshly baked treats, spa bathrooms for a luxury bath time experience, beautiful en-suite bedrooms with smart TVs, a choice of comfortable lounges, a dedicated activities room, a cinema for an authentic movie experience, and an in-house hair and beauty salon for a little bit of pampering. And, with meandering pathways and beautiful views of the countryside, residents can really make the most of the outdoor space.

Lorraine Ball, General Manager at Waterside Court commented: “The whole team here at Waterside Court is so proud to be selected as a finalist for this award.  We are delighted to be chosen from all the other entries, it is wonderful for the home to be recognised.  Waterside Court is a stunning property, we have so many lovely spaces and brilliant facilities for residents to enjoy here. We can’t wait to find out if we’ve won!”

Stunning, Personalised Bedrooms

We always look forward to welcoming our new residents to Waterside Court and the team are always on hand to make the experience truly special and unique.

One of the questions asked when looking around our home is whether residents are able to bring in their own things. The answer is: of course they are!

We encourage residents to make their room their own, be it with pictures on the walls, their own bedding, their own furniture or even a favourite blanket.

This particular resident loves the colour pink, so her room was lovingly prepared by her family to ensure it was warm and welcoming for when she arrived.

Folk Dance Entertainment

Residents at Waterside Court enjoyed some live entertainment from Graham, a fantastic folk dance entertainer.

English folk dance encompasses a rich diversity of dance forms that have developed over many centuries in communities throughout England.

These traditions are alive and thriving as part of a living and evolving tradition, alongside many other forms of traditional dance present in England today.

May Kidner, Activitiy Coordinator at Waterside Court, said: "Residents here absolutely love having live entertainment in and Graham offered something new that many residents haven't seen before. It was heart-warming to see everyone engaging with the performance and it was certainly a lovely way to spend the morning."
