Activities at Adlington Manor Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Lynne Bowler

Activities Coordinator

I joined the activities team at Adlington Manor in May 2017. Previously, I have worked as a tree surgeon and have had heavy involvement with the Guides and Brownies. I love participating in activities with residents, whether that's by driving the minibus on trips outside the home, or by engaging in themed days.

I am passionate about my role and especially the challenge of coming up with new ways to engage as many residents as possible in our activities here.

Life at Adlington Manor Care Home

May the fourth be with you!

Residents and staff went over to the Dark Side on May 4th as they embraced their inner sith and celebrated Star Wars Day.  The date has become the day to honour one of the most successful movie franchises of all time, the global phenomenon that is George Lucas’ Star Wars.

Staff and residents at Adlington Manor celebrated all things Star Wars by hosting a back-to-back movie marathon, having a fancy dress competition, holding a Space themed quiz. Creating Star Wars themed menu and snacks washed down with Star Wars themed cocktails.

General Manager, Fiona said: “It’s really good fun to get into the spirit of Star Wars Day. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but the fans amongst us really enjoyed our movie marathon and we have had some brilliant fancy dress outfits!

Magic table continues to bring fun!

Our Magic Table 360 continues to bring a lot of joy and fun to our Residents here at Adlington Manor.  The table is portable so it can be used wherever residents feel most comfortable, it can be projected onto the floor, ceiling, walls, a whiteboard or even the bed.

The Happiness Programme allows for a range of games that change seasonally and have country-specific versions covering 14 different categories, so there will always be something new for residents to try.

Hairdressing is back on the agenda

There were happy scenes at Adlington Manor care home in Adlington as hairdressers were finally allowed back into the home.

Just like the rest of the country, residents had been waiting patiently for months to get their hair styled and so they were delighted to be able to book in for a long overdue cut and blow dry.

Fiona Gough, General Manager at Adlington Manor commented: “It really has felt like Christmas today, our residents are just so delighted to be able to get a good cut and to feel like themselves again.  It is wonderful to see them all so happy, we have really missed our hairdressers – it is fantastic to be able to welcome them back again.”

St Georges Day

Adlington Manor in Adlington celebrated St George’s Day on 23 April in style.

In honour of the patron saint of England, staff and residents at the home dressed up for the occasion and enjoyed a delicious festive lunch, prepared by the home’s chef.

In the afternoon, the residents had the opportunity to learn more about St George and when the day came into prominence in the 1400s, through a variety of quizzes and virtual activities.

St George's Day in England remembers St George, England's patron saint. The anniversary of his death, which is on April 23, is seen as England's national day. According to a legend, he was a soldier in the Roman army who killed a dragon and saved a princess.

Virtual trip to the Zoo

As part of Barchester’s Life Enrichment Programme, team members and residents at Adlington Manor in Adlington enjoyed an exciting virtual talk, generously hosted by Five Sisters Zoo.

The residents had the opportunity to explore and learn more about the animal life at the zoo and the important conservation, rescue and education work carried out at the grounds of the zoo.

Five Sisters Zoo was officially established in 2005 with just a small collection of rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, and pigs. Since then the zoo has grown into an exciting collection of over 160 different animal species from all around the world.

Residents enjoy double celebrations

Team members and residents at Adlington Manor in Adlington had a special day celebrating National Tea Day and the Queen’s 95th birthday on 21 April in style.

The team at the home put together a tea party to mark the day, which falls on the Queen’s landmark birthday. Supplied with a tasty selection of biscuits, cakes, and of course, teas for the event, the residents had lots of fun taking part in sessions including themed quizzes and virtual tea celebrations.

The residents also dedicated time to write cards and letters to the Queen to wish her a very happy birthday.

National Tea Day is observed in the United Kingdom every year on 21 April to celebrate the drinking of tea. It is celebrated in tea rooms, hotels, pubs and cafés through special events, and charitable fundraising events held across the country. Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840.
