Activities at Southerndown Care Home

Our specialist activities staff are committed to organising a mix of activities and events for residents and the local community to get involved in, including trips out to local places of interest in our minibus and visits from entertainers and musicians. It is important to us that each individual who we support can get as much from these as possible, so we try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests and capabilities as best as possible, and encourage them to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can.

Activities Co-ordinator

I have worked at Southerndown since 2013. I enjoy providing various activities for our residents with the team, such as gardening groups, trips out in the mini bus around the Cotswolds, quiz days and entertainment performances. Amongst the many things we enjoy doing, part of my role within the home is to ensure all residents are provided the purpose in life to fulfil day to day stimulation, whether that be together, or creating individual activity to those that prefer.

10 Years Service for Wonderful Wilma

Our much loved Care Assistant, Wilma Estupa, at Southerndown has received a prestigious Long Service Award in celebration of working at Barchester Healthcare for 10 years. Starting in June 2011, 'Wonderful Wilma' has worked with residents and their relatives to ensure that their needs have been met over the years.

Wilma was super surprised to learn that our Regional Director, Xin Zhao and Lorna Rose, Divisional Director at Barchester where visiting Southerndown on the day of her 10th anniversary.

On presenting the award, Lorna Rose said: “I’m always pleased to hear stories about the long service of Barchester staff, and am delighted to be here today as Wilma has achieved this milestone. It is dedication like this that ensures our residents are provided with a happy place to live.”

Our home manager; Lorraine Ball confirmed “We’re delighted to be celebrating 10 years of loyal service with Wilma. She has demonstrated her dedication and loyalty to this home and its residents year after year. I speak for all of us here at Southerndown Care Home when I say that I’m looking forward to many more years of working with Wilma!”

Congratulations Wilma from your Southerndown family.

Happy Birthday Your Majesty

The residents of Southerndown care home in Chipping Norton marked the Queen’s official 95th birthday on June 12th in style with a right royal tea party.

Head chef Stephen whipped up freshly-baked scones with strawberry jam and cream for the occasion, all washed down with pots of tea. The residents took part in a variety of royal–themed activities including watching The Trooping of the Colour. It brought back so many happy memories. One of our residents; Jackie recalled that whist she lived in London she was lucky enough to be able to watch the ceremony in person several times.

Home Manager, Lorraine said: “Our residents love a party and they love the Queen so they all enjoyed the tea and cakes and watching the parade and the fly-past to mark the Queen’s official birthday. Everyone at Southerndown care home wanted to wish Her Majesty a very happy birthday and say thank you to our longest reigning monarch.”

Celebrating Carers' Week

Residents at Southerndown care home celebrated National Carers’ Week, which took place last week; from June 7-13. Carole, our Resident Ambassador joined care home manager; Lorraine Ball on a walk through the home communities to hand deliver a sweet treat, of Lindt chocolates and Thank You card in recognition of all the wonderful staff at the home, whose hard work and dedication make a real difference to the lives of those living in their care.

Carers Week is an annual event to raise awareness of caring, highlighting the challenges carers face, and recognising the contribution they make to our residents, families and communities throughout the UK. The theme for Carers Week this year is ‘Making caring visible and valued’ - to shine a light on all those who work tirelessly behind the scenes to care for vulnerable people in our communities.

Home manager Lorraine said: “It is so wonderful to be able to celebrate Carers Week and thank our fantastic carers. It really does feel like life is getting back to normal now and our residents and staff would be pleased to welcome you for a show round of our beautiful home."

Weekend Garden Project

Renew and rejuvenating our gardens is part of our whole-home approach to the residents’ activities program. We all love getting involved in our garden workshops, we have been tidying up our various green spaces and courtyards, removing decaying winter leaves and removing pesky weeds!

This weekend our residents challenged us to liven up the garden furniture ready for summer. Resident; Dennis helped us pick the right stain, and ‘Bell’ one of our more adventurous residents, donned her uniform and got stuck right in; sanding and painting.

Luckily for us Bell knows exactly what’s she’s doing, as she recalled upcycling her own garden furniture in the past. We’ve had such fun over the past 2-days; clearing, potting and painting. Adding colour to all areas of the grounds, it will be so rewarding for our residents to see everything grow and blossom throughout the coming months. We're looking forward to showcasing our home to the #chippingnortoncommunity

We’d like to invite you to visit for a walk round our home and gardens. You can meet our residents and the team at our Meet the Manager event taking place on Saturday, 3rd July 2021; please call us on 0204 5338957 to make an appointment*

Sunshine Brings Gardens to Life

The Southerndown care home gardens are beginning to burst with colour and wildlife. Our residents just love to take a stroll in the sun. On a morning nature walk they spotted; squirrels, starlings and sparrows, there are even birds nesting in our bird boxes. Taking a seat in the summer sun is just the tonic we needed, catching rays as the world goes by – We’re all amazed at the difference some sunshine makes.

Remembering Chipping Norton

Our residents have been enjoying a little reminiscence therapy courtesty of The Theatre Chipping Norton by way of their 'captured on camera' information sheets and memorable items contained in their Memory Lanes gift box.

The items brought back so many wonderful memories of growing up in Chipping Norton. Especially for Joan who moved from London during the war to become part of the Land Army and “do her bit for the war effort “. Joan loved chippy so much she ended up staying around the local area.

Chipping Norton is a wonderful place to live; steeped in history.
