Activities at Southerndown Care Home

Our specialist activities staff are committed to organising a mix of activities and events for residents and the local community to get involved in, including trips out to local places of interest in our minibus and visits from entertainers and musicians. It is important to us that each individual who we support can get as much from these as possible, so we try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests and capabilities as best as possible, and encourage them to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can.

Cathy Wheeler

Activity Co-ordinator

I have been with the team at Southerndown since 2023

People ask me what I enjoy about my job and the answer is easy... 'the people'. Its the small things that make the difference every day, seeing people smile and seeing someone respond positively to interaction. We offer a great life enrichment programme at Southerndown and every day is different but enjoyable.

In my spare time I like to spend time in the garden, I enjoy sewing but mostly love spending time with my grandchildren

Happy Birthday Nurse Nirmala!

Today we celebrated our amazing Nurse Nirmala Joshua's 60th birthday. Nirmala has worked at our home for 11 years, doing day and nights. She's a hardworking, hugely valued member of the Barchester team.

We wish you a very 'Happy Birthday' ...from all at Southerndown.

Knit and Natter

So what do you do on a typical wet and windy bank holiday Monday? The residents of Southerndown came up with a great idea - 'Knit and Natter'.

With a warming cup of tea and nice price of cake our ladies settled down to some knitting. It brought back so many wonderful memories of times spent knitting, baby clothes, jumpers and hats for our loved ones over the years.

Happy Birthday Molly!

The staff and residents of Southerndown wanted to send their best wishes to the wonderful Molly, our visiting Fall's specialist from Care Home Support Service's at Windrush House. We hope you have a fabulous birthday, thank you for your continued support... enjoy the cake!

National Tell a Story Day

Earlier this week we took part in National 'Tell a Story' Day. Resident; Barbara read eloquently several animal stories, including facts about different dog varieties, many of which her resident friends had owned in the past.

It was a wonderful prelude to the Five Sisters Zoo live link up.

Employee of the Month - April 2021

Congratulations Fernando for being nominated by residents and colleagues at Southerndown as 'Employee of the Month'.

We all feel you have gone 'above & beyond' and wish to thank you for your continued commitment to bringing a smile to our faces. Well done from all at Southerndown; enjoy your gifts.

Virtual Tour - Five Sisters Zoo

As part of Barchester’s Life Enrichment Programme, team members and residents at Southerndown Care Home enjoyed an exciting virtual talk, generously hosted by Five Sisters Zoo

Our residents thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the animals. They had the opportunity to explore and learn more about animal life at the zoo, and the important conservation, rescue and education work carried out at the grounds of the zoo.

Five Sisters Zoo was officially established in 2005 with just a small collection of rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, and pigs. Since then the zoo has grown into an exciting collection of over 160 different animal species from all around the world.

One of the zoo’s many important initiatives is to provide permanent homes for rescued bears, lions and animals that have been part of travelling circuses or other establishments.

Lucy Tomlinson, Resident Experience Manager for Barchester Healthcare, commented: “Our varied life enrichment programme keeps the residents active, and provides a daily choice of engaging physical, mental and spiritual activities tailored to the residents’ interests and abilities.”

Our residents absolutely loved the lions and amazing bears!
