Activities at Southerndown Care Home

Our specialist activities staff are committed to organising a mix of activities and events for residents and the local community to get involved in, including trips out to local places of interest in our minibus and visits from entertainers and musicians. It is important to us that each individual who we support can get as much from these as possible, so we try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests and capabilities as best as possible, and encourage them to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can.

Stacey Davies

Activities Co-ordinator

I have worked at Southerndown since 2013. I enjoy providing various activities for our residents with the team, such as gardening groups, trips out in the mini bus around the Cotswolds, quiz days and entertainment performances. Amongst the many things we enjoy doing, part of my role within the home is to ensure all residents are provided the purpose in life to fulfil day to day stimulation, whether that be together, or creating individual activity to those that prefer.

National Cream Tea Day

National Cream Tea day at Southerndown care home was more than just a ‘piece of cake’.

The Southerndown team brewed up a storm for National Cream Tea Day on June 25th by hosting an afternoon tea party across all communities, with a wonderful selection of baked treats, speciality teas and lashings of ginger beer!

Refusing to pick a side in the controversial debate of cream before jam for the Cornish tradition or jam before cream as part of the Devonshire tradition; resident Joan said she didn’t mind either way, it all depends on the quality of the jam!

Whatever way you eat them, our staff and residents all agreed; Chef's homemade scones were "truly scrumptious".

If you or a loved one are considering later life care, and fancy a cup of tea with friends, please join us on Saturday 3rd July to meet our Senior General Manager; Lorraine Ball and take a tour of our beautiful home, meet our residents and the Southerndown team.

We look forward to meeting you, call to book an appointment on 0204 533 8957. Alternative dates can be arranged by emailing Lorraine direct on: Lorraine.Ball@barchester.com

The Longest Day 'Solo Ride' Challenge

You may remember on the 16th March 2021 the residents and staff of Southerndown Care Home in Chipping Norton started their ‘Sponsored Cyclethon Challenge’ using ‘floor pedal cycles over 5-weeks to clock up the 124 miles in support of Oxfordshire young carer’s to raise funds for the Be Free Young Carers (BFYC) charity.

Since then, Team Leader and Dementia champion; John Coles from the home has been 'in training' for the final leg of the challenge. On The Longest Day; 21st June 2021, John will attempt to solo cycle the 124 mile Cyclethon by road.

Starting at Southerndown care home before sunrise and solo cycling to Chacombe Park in Banbury, then Oxford Beaumont near Oxford centre, cycling cross-country to Hempton Field in Chinnor and, on the return leg to Middletown Grange in Witney before arriving back at Southerndown in Chipping Norton before sundown!

John’s mantra throughout has been to inspire the older generation in our homes and, raise money for Be Free Young Carers to help give back to these amazing young carers, to make life a little easier, and give them a chance to be children, make friends and have fun away from the pressures of their caring roles.

Just before 6pm John arrived back at Southerndown having completed his challenge within 12-hours!

Please join us in congratulating him on his massive achievement to raise awareness, and support for our Oxfordshire's amazing young carers. Your full donation will go direct to the Be Free Young Carers Charity:

Father's Day at Southerndown

Father's Day at Southerndown saw a celebration of all ‘gentlemen’ within our home. Chef Bong baked and presented our gents with some exquisitely decorated vanilla and chocolate cream topped cupcakes.

As they gathered together for pub games and to watch the footie, they enjoyed washing each cupcake down with an ice-cold beer. The locally brewed 'Hooky' beers went down very well! Hook Norton Brewery

Employee of the Month - May 2021

Please join us in congratulating Sue, our Head of Housekeeping at Southerndown on receiving 'Employee of the Month'. Our residents, and your colleagues wanted you to know they appreciate all you do to keep their 'home' and workplace perfect.

Nothing is ever too much, and everything you do is with a smile! We hope you enjoy spending the voucher. Thank you for always going above and beyond. You're a wonderful team player and key member of the Southerndown team.

Flower Arranging and Art

Today our residents were treated to a 'Still Life' Art Master Class. The flower arrangement subject had been kindly arranged by fellow residents Jackie and Pat.

Everyone found the class therapeutic and extremely enjoyable. We're looking forward to our sunflowers blooming as I do believe we could have some budding Van Gogh's in our midst!
