"The manager of Barchester Southerndown Care Home goes above and beyond in her role. She shows such empathy to all the residents and the families. She has an amazing team and they are so kind and caring. They always have time for every resident there. Every member of staff there is a credit. My father had end-of-life care at the home, after being a resident there for a month last year. They handled his end-of-life care with such care and compassion, I am so very grateful that he did not have to spend his last week at a hospital. Thank you all."

"Our family are delighted with the care you provide for our mother! Plus two members of staff in particular have been so helpful with our admin. We are very grateful. "My friend has been in Southerndown for just over a year, and I have visited her pretty well every week (except when away). I consider her well looked after and believe she is contented. I haven't really seen any activities, and I am not paying the fees, so have left "activities and value for money" blank. Otherwise, I give everything good - staff excellent. Thank you for caring for my dear friend."

"Barchester Southerndown Care Home provided incredible, kind, selfless care to my mother throughout her time in the home, from November 2022 until October 2023. We, as a family, have nothing but praise for the staff there who kept Mum smiling and laughing despite everything her dementia was doing to her. We would not have had Mum anywhere else. "I found my husband well dressed and having had his lunch, but still had room for a cake brought to him. He couldn't remember the house we lived in together, despite my showing photos of it - so sad. I tried to speak to a nurse who I had great difficulty understanding and was none the wiser about my husband's condition."

"My husband with Frontotemporal dementia stayed for 1 week for respite care so I could have a break. He told me he liked it very much, staff are excellent and food lovely. He is trying to lose weight and the chef prepared him lovely light meals. He did some baking and Book Club and made some friends. He has said he would like to return in the future as he felt at home. The care team are so good and he felt cared for throughout his stay."

"My grandmother was a resident at Southerndown Care Home from September 2022 - May 2023, when she passed away aged 100. The care provided was fantastic. The care home was a pleasant place to visit and residents always appeared content. They provided the family with a lovely home when we could no longer cope with my grandmother at home. We would recommend Southerndown without reservation."

"My late father and my 94-year-old mother have received excellent care from nurses, carers, cleaners and the manager. They have cooperated with my sister and me when we have raised issues. My only negative is that the lift hasn't been for approximately 2 months which has added to my mother's mental confusion. The best thing would be to buy a new one."

"Mum has been here now for 5 months and is as settled as can be. "My 90-year-old mum recently spent a few days at Southerndown Care home in order to be able to attend her granddaughter's wedding. She was a little nervous about coming but was soon put at ease by the caring and compassionate staff, who did everything to make sure that the stay went smoothly. Her medication was handled extremely efficiently and we were also impressed by the quality of the food. The whole stay went very smoothly and as well as attending the wedding, mum felt that she had had a little holiday. Thank you to the fantastic team at Southerndown for making this possible."

"My mum was placed here as her dementia deteriorated very quickly after my brother's death and she could no longer be cared for by my father who was 90. I didn't know a lot about dementia before this point, as my mum was only diagnosed a few months before she moved here. However, the team and manager were so helpful, answering all of my questions and helping my mum settle in. I truly admire the staff and the job they do at Southerndown. They are always patient, happy, and engaging with people in their care. My mum seemed to know everyone in Memory Lane very quickly, and when I came to visit, they were always happy to chat, and I could just tell my mum was happy in what could have been a very stressful time (sadly, my dad passed away while she was here). The facilities are of high standard and Mum always speaks very positively about the food (especially the cake!). Huge thank you to everyone at Southerdown for supporting me and Mum during her stay."

"My mother was taken into Southerndown as a 96-year-old palliative care patient. She was not eating and barely taking fluids. My mother was put in a pleasant room with a proper hospital (adjustable) bed. The staff were extremely kind and attentive during her short say and always thoughtful to the needs of the family. My mother passed away peacefully on the 21st of March 2022."

"When we found the urgent need to place our mother in a care home, I was pleased when I contacted Southerndown to be able to discuss everything with the manager, who was very informative, understanding and helpful. She was able to offer Mum a place a few days later. The nurses and carers on Memory Lane have been wonderfully caring and supportive, enabling Mum to settle in a short time. She is definitely having more of a social life and stimulation than when she was living in her own home with a live-in carer. We are satisfied that she is receiving the best possible care in her circumstances."

"I have viewed many care homes for mum, but visiting Southerndown I instantly knew it was right. It is some distance from me and her home town but that is a small price to pay for the outstanding care she's receiving. The home is very professionally run, with staff friendly, efficient and attentive. Mum is settling in well in an incredibly short space of time and has informed me how she likes the staff and all aspects of the home. It is always difficult placing a loved one in another's care, especially with restricted visiting due to Covid, but I have full trust in the staff at Southerndown - they have removed a great burden of worry from my shoulders, and more importantly, supporting mum in her needs ensuring she's comfortable and happy. An excellent service for which I can understand their CQC Outstanding Rating for care."

"I was worried about choosing a nursing home for my mother as it is a huge responsibility and obviously I wanted to find one where I thought she would get well looked after, feel safe and be happy to accept as her home. Her medical needs had become so advanced that she needed to be somewhere that they could look after her well and that they would know her needs. The general manager and all the staff were so kind and helpful when I was trying to make the decision and I am so pleased she is there as she seems content and happy that this is her new home. I can see how much the staff care and look after her. I cannot thank the general manager and the staff enough as they have been brilliant and are always very welcoming and helpful."

"My mum always looks well and looked after and cared for, she always seems happy. The home always looks lovely and clean and tidy. "My Uncle was admitted on 21st December. After being isolated for 10 days he was able to mix with other residents. When we were allowed to visit, he told all of the family that he was very happy there and that all the staff were lovely. He looks the best he has for a long time and enjoys the company and the activities. Looking forward to when the home can be fully open again."

"My mother was a resident of Southerndown Nursing Home for quite a few years, with a complex health condition. I always got the impression she was well cared for and treated with respect. The past year of lockdown made visits impossible and zoom was not a suitable medium for my mother but I always felt confident that the staff would be doing their absolute best for her and that she was safe. The home in general and her room were always clean and comfortable. Whenever I saw the dining room food it always looked appetising and plentiful. I can't comment on activities because latterly my mother was too unwell to participate."

"I took my friend for respite to Southerndown Care Home for a short period and hope to get him closer to my home which is about 25 minutes away. He was quite anxious when I took him there but he now likes the place so much that he doesn't want to leave. He found the staff to be amazing and very caring. He tells me all the time that the staff are very kind and lovely. I am not surprised at all because my experience with the manager and all the staff that I have met has been very pleasant. I absolutely agree with all my friend says about the care home such as good food, regular checks on the residents and staff are always there to reassure him when he gets anxious. Hence, I have decided that he stays there permanently because he is cared for very well. The hygiene level is very high and the place doesn't smell like a nursing home where he spent some time a while ago. I highly recommend this care home for people who need 24 hour care, especially those with dementia."

"Following the emergency admission of my grandmother over the new year period to Southerndown we have been very impressed with the level of care and attention to detail they have shown. My grandmother is currently on respite care, and we hope she will remain with the home permanently. The food has been great, the medical care she has received to get her back to full health is second to none and she is assessed daily to ensure she is in the best environment for her needs, including moving her from the memory lane unit to the "elderly and frail" unit to allow her to socialise with other residents in similar situations to her. The way the home are handling and protecting the residents from COVID is impressive to say the least, the staff are tested weekly as well as all having been vaccinated along with all of the residents including my grandmother. We receive updates daily if not every other day on my grandmother's progress whilst she settles, and I cannot recommend this home enough!"

"My grandmother has been with the home for nearly 2 years, we can not thank the home enough for the continuous high-quality care and compassion towards families. The home has worked tirelessly this year through the pandemic not only with the residents but with the families also. We have been kept up to date, opportunities such as Skype, phone calls and window visits have been available. I was upmost excited and please when we visited my family member in the visiting pod they have provided, this gave us opportunities to visit in the warm and safe environment for both us as a family and for my grandchildren as well, the home is continuing to work hard to provide the best care for residents and families, but providing indoor visiting for memory lane. Our family were pleased to attend on Monday the 30th to support staff to erect a nativity scene at the entrance of the home this will bring joy to families, residents and passers-by. Our family would highly recommend this home."

"My very elderly mother, suffering from early dementia, was persuaded to take a respite break at Southerndown. She went with reluctance and reservation but loved it and stayed. The care she receives is first class, friendly and professional and communication with us, her family, is excellent. All the staff seem genuinely caring - nothing is too much trouble and Covid security is beyond criticism. She has a lovely room, facilities are excellent and she has probably never eaten better meals. We and she have complete peace of mind."

"My mother came into Southerndown for respite care and did not want to leave. She has settled in really well and is relaxed and happy. "During the pandemic, the care home has given constant updates which have been very reassuring. They have all done an amazing job in such difficult circumstances. "As a family, we were hesitant to move grandad into a home but he was quite insistent that's what he wanted. We respected his wishes and started to look around for suitable placements. Sutherndown ticked a lot of boxes and for some reason just felt right for grandad from the very first visit. Grandad is happy and very well looked after by the team. "Although my husband was only in Southerndown for three short months I always felt very comfortable in myself that I had chosen the best place for him. The home is spotlessly clean, very well furnished and the staff were so kind, caring and friendly. I felt I had known them for years. They would ring me if anything related to my husband had to be changed, so I always felt I was still part of his life. Up until he went into Southerndown I had cared for him myself for just over 8 years so I know what is involved in the care of dementia patients. The staff were quite simply the best."

"The time our sister was in your care we only had positive cooperation and friendly connection because of the distance we had to travel our visits are few but when e did arrive the welcome was so friendly and warm. "My father had a short 3-month stay at Southerndown. From his first arrival until his final days, we met and spoke to many of the nurses, carers, housekeeping and office staff – each and every one of them were always warm, friendly, and caring. The staff comforted my father towards the end when the family were unable to visit due to the national lockdown – despite the restrictions the staff were working under they always managed to keep the family informed and facilitated several video calls, which helped the family immensely."

"The staff are marvellous - cheerful, professional, efficient, patient, kind and genuinely caring My Mum is happy here. "My father entered Southerndown in May 2019 with dementia, blindness, learning issues and pulmonary fibrosis - so quite a challenge as he could be quite aggressive too. He had been transferred from another care home who were struggling to cope with. They were not able to handle dementia patients. However, my father has settled in very well. My sister and I visit on a regular basis and I can honestly say the staff have been attentive, friendly and very caring. They keep us updated with any medical issues, falls etc. I have no hesitation in recommending Southerndown. It is comforting to know my father is in very safe hands."

"My dad was in the care of Southerndown for nearly five years before he passed away on the 29th December 2019. During his time here the care he was given was excellent. The staff treated him like family and his welfare was always paramount. The staff at the care home catered not only to dads needs but also our own in that we knew he was in safe hands whenever we left after visiting. The genuine support and compassion given to my family and I during his final hours was overwhelming and we shall always appreciate that."

"I wish you had put a box for "very good" as there is a big gap between "good" and "excellent". I have always found the nursing care staff very good. They know the residents well, their likes, dislikes, foibles etc., which means a lot. Rooms in Memory Lane are satisfactory, though windows in room 10 are in bad condition."

"My mum came here in July due to the closure of her previous home. She is 96 and has advanced Dementia. At first, she showed signs of giving up, not eating etc and we were quite concerned, but due to the care of the staff, she is now eating and asking for seconds! She is contented and happy in her environment. The carers and staff let me know how she is getting on when I visit. They tell me what she enjoy's, music in particular and I feel she is well cared for. She is always well-groomed. The atmosphere is welcoming and the activities are excellent. The residents are treated with respect and from what I have seen of the food it is delicious."

"During her final hours, I stayed with my mother overnight and I'm so grateful for the extra time with her. All through the night, a nurse or care worker called in on a regular basis to administer medication, if needed and check that she was stable and comfortable. My mother's needs were catered for and the care and attention she received were exemplary. I cannot thank the staff of Barchester Southerndown Care Home enough for their commitment and professional application. I never felt that had I not been with my mother, that she would have been left uncared for or alone."

"Beautiful gardens and surroundings greet you, then you enter the home, which is more like a hotel, the decor light and bright, but homely and welcoming, staff cheerful, accommodating and very warm, the rooms are turned into the new tenants very own with pictures and some favourite pieces arranged in the room, all to make them comfortable, which my father appreciated. There was always a member of staff on hand 24/7 and always positive, professional and most of all cheerful, he was well looked after."

"What can I say about Southerndown. I'm overwhelmed by this establishment. Not only are they caring for my mother, they are also caring for us relatives. With that in mind you know they are totally on top of everything. The staff are so caring and compassionate, they love my mum to bits and that's very obvious. I cannot find one fault or negative thing to say about Southerndown. You can rest assured that once you've gone home you know that your loved one is in good hands and well taken care of and that helps. "My father has been in Barchester Southerndown Care Home since March 2016. We (myself, wife, daughter) are always welcomed any day or time we arrive by every member of staff. I find the 'gems' meetings invaluable where again we are always welcomed or encouraged to comment on anything be it a concern or suggestion. When my mother developed Alzheimer's in November 2017, I had no hesitation in asking if she could become a resident. Dad is in memory lane and mum in frailty, they take mum to lunch with him which is a great comfort for mum and us. In the more than 2 years dad has been there staff are the same which say a lot about the great service provided."

"My mum has complicated Alzheimer's and I was surprised how quickly she settled into Southerndown Care Home after having several moves. The atmosphere is calm with plenty of space for mum to wander. "Mum spent a year at Southerndown, where she died peacefully in January 2018. Although reluctant to go into care at all, she was happy and well cared for in a clean, cosy and friendly environment. Dad and I had total trust in the staff who are, without exception, warm and kind and genuinely seem to be happy in their work. You can't fake that. As visitors, we were always recognised and welcomed warmly. The home is well run and beautifully presented without being intimidating. We were kept informed of all incidents and medical consultations and Mum was treated with nothing but kindness and respect. After she died many of the staff were genuinely saddened and their good wishes were sincere and most welcome."

I shall be forever thankful for all the care and all of the love that everyone there showed to our Mum in the last years of her life, you were all like a big family to her and us. From the day she arrived until the day she slipped away from us, I always felt that not only was she safe and well looked after but I also felt that she was looked after by people that genuinely cared. A big thank you to all of you as well for all the kindness you showed me during these last few difficult weeks, you will never know how much I've appreciated all the kindness and understanding you showed me or how much I will also be missing you all.
