Activities at South Chowdene Care Home

Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!

Niki Powell

Activities Coordinator

I arrange meaningful activities for all of our residents based on their likes and interests. I love sharing fun times with our residents, their families and with staff. I thoroughly enjoy chatting with residents about their hobbies/interests as well as reminiscing in small groups.

Our activities extend beyond the home with trips to places of interest, places residents have enjoyed throughout their lives eg. Seaside, parks, garden centers, as well as craft/ art workshops at libraries and general interest talks around the area.

Life at South Chowdene Care Home

St Patrick's Day

We made Irish cream tiffin and St Patrick bake for the tea trolley. Lynn made us a delicious Irish stew, there was fiddle music and a ‘green quiz’ as well as St Patrick’s bingo – as well as the odd Guinness.

Comic Relief

Staff tried out many and various different hair colours and styles to raise money for Comic Relief. The residents got a huge laugh out of the different styles and sometimes even asked who the new member of staff was!

Crazy for Crufts

Residents and staff at South Chowdene Care home care home in Low Fell are loving the return of the world’s largest dog show, Crufts.  Residents at the home are all keen animal lovers and are delighted that Crufts is back after what felt like a very long wait.

This year was extra special as our visiting WAG dog Annie and her owner Mandy were at Crufts raising awareness of the much needed role they play. Mandy said she thoroughly enjoyed the experience and added ‘what a privilege for Annie the Labrador and her family to attend Crufts on behalf of Wag and company to talk about the very special work the Charity does.’

Lesley Dawson, General Manager at the home, said: “Our residents all love animals, and eagerly await Annie and Mandy every week. They have even managed to keep their visits going virtually throughout the lockdowns giving our residents a much needed link to the outside world during that time.’

My name is not Wig

We had a lovely time joining Angela Cobbin for a theatre-inspired virtual talk about her book ‘My Name is Not Wigs’.  ‘My Name Is Not Wigs’ is the ultimate read for fans of witty behind-the-curtains memoirs, especially those with a penchant for the bright lights of stage and screen: tears and accolades aplenty!

Angela shared interesting facts with our residents about her book, her life and her experiences as a wig creator in London’s West End in celebration of World Theatre Day.  All in all the afternoon was an absolute triumph!

Carer celebrates 20-years long service

A Carer at South Chowdene Care home in Low Fell has received a prestigious long Service Award in celebration of working at Barchester Healthcare for 20 years.   Susan Hart, started at Barchester in 2002 and has worked with residents and their relatives to ensure that their needs have been met over the years.

Lesley Dawson, General Manager of South Chowdene Care home said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating 20 years of loyal service with South Chowdene Care home. She has demonstrated her dedication and loyalty to this home and its residents year after year. I speak for all of us here at South Chowdene Care home when I say that I’m looking forward to many more years of working with Susan!”

Politics and Passion at Cliveden

We were treated to an amazing live virtual talk and a tour of Cliveden, hosted by the house and chapel guides from the National Trust Talks Service.

The volunteers kindly gave us a tour around the famous house taking an in-depth look at Cliveden’s many stories from its 350 year history, from devilish dukes to scandalous headlines and boundary-breaking garden designs to political notoriety.

Starting with the Duke of Buckingham who built the first house in 1666, our residents met the key owners who helped shape the house and its gardens including the Orkney, Sutherland and Astor families.

The talk was accompanied by an illustrated presentation which brought to life these individuals and showed how their influence at Cliveden still continues today.
