Activities at South Chowdene Care Home

Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!

Niki Powell

Activities Coordinator

I arrange meaningful activities for all of our residents based on their likes and interests. I love sharing fun times with our residents, their families and with staff. I thoroughly enjoy chatting with residents about their hobbies/interests as well as reminiscing in small groups.

Our activities extend beyond the home with trips to places of interest, places residents have enjoyed throughout their lives eg. Seaside, parks, garden centers, as well as craft/ art workshops at libraries and general interest talks around the area.

Life at South Chowdene Care Home

Crystal Palace Chronicles

We had a lovely time joining Graham Whitlock for an exciting virtual event to discuss his book ‘The Crystal Palace Chronicles: Star of Nimrod’.

Our residents were thrilled to find out more about the book and the fictional character Joe, who went on a rollercoaster adventure travelling back in time to the heyday of Victorian Crystal Palace.

Everyone had lots of fun during the virtual talk, as Graham took them on a clever and hilarious adventure. A great time was had by all.

International Day of Families

Families are the foundation of society.  Now that we are able to visit each other freely again, it is more important than ever that families get to spend as much quality time together as possible.  Staff and residents here at South Chowdene spent International Day of Families celebrating their own families and thinking about the families of others.

International Day of Families takes place on 15th May.  It was established by the UN in 1993 to raise awareness of the issues faced by families across the world. International Day of Families highlights the important role than families play in communities and recognises the changes that family structures have undergone over the years, and are continuing to experience.

Residents and staff got involved by hosting a coffee morning where families chatted, shared memories and played games with each other.  There was a fabulous atmosphere throughout the day.

International Nurses Day

South Chowdene residents held an afternoon tea party for our hard working nurses and made cards to show their appreciation of the hard work the nurses do in the home.

We also remembered what Florence Nightingale did for the nursing world and subsequently for our health today. We also tested our own knowledge of the human body and medical facts with a quick fire quiz.

Trip down memory lane for V E Day

Residents at South Chowdene marked the anniversary of VE Day in style by throwing a ratio book tasting session to remember the foods available at the time, the spread was especially prepared by the homes hospitality team. The home was specially decorated for the occasion with flags and bunting.

Our residents listened to wartime tunes, reminisced about their memories of VE Day and watched clips of the celebrations that took place outside Buckingham Palace and all across London and looked back to the day with a VE day activity book and quiz.

It was a fabulous day, enjoyed by all.  To find out more about life at South Chowdene, please visit our website: www.barchester.com/home/south-chowdene-care-home

Cultural treats at South Chowdene

South Chowdene residents spent the May Bank Holiday with cross culture celebrations.  Residents marvelled at a virtual Maypole dance display and reminisced about their own Maypole dancing attempts and Mayday community celebrations. We also took a look at how Eid would be celebrated and had a taste of ‘Kheer’ which they would eaten as part of an Eid meal with lots of lovely spices and sultanas. Thank you to our hospitality team for making this delicious treat for us.

Conversations by the Pond

We had a lovely time joining Henry Slator for an exciting virtual event to discuss his book ‘Conversations at the Pond’.

Henry had an unusual writing journey, which many of our residents found inspiring, he underwent chemotherapy in early 2020, which allowed him to rediscover his light-hearted outlook on life by imagining conversations with creatures in and around his large garden pond and adding buckets of fun.

The entertaining Conversations at the Pond, with its mass of colourful illustrations, took our residents along his journey, they felt inspired, cheered and loved hearing all about Henry’s experiences.
