Activities at South Chowdene Care Home

Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!

Niki Powell

Activities Coordinator

I arrange meaningful activities for all of our residents based on their likes and interests. I love sharing fun times with our residents, their families and with staff. I thoroughly enjoy chatting with residents about their hobbies/interests as well as reminiscing in small groups.

Our activities extend beyond the home with trips to places of interest, places residents have enjoyed throughout their lives eg. Seaside, parks, garden centers, as well as craft/ art workshops at libraries and general interest talks around the area.

As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies

Life at South Chowdene Care Home

Ukrainian support

This was all about finding out about a country most hardly knew about until trouble started and showing support for those disrupted by the war. Residents very much enjoyed a virtual look around Ukrainian landmarks and countryside before sampling Chicken Kiev and Honey cake made by our fantastic chef Babs. Ribbons were worn to show support for the people of Ukraine and the ‘seasons’ tree has been decorated to remind us to think of Ukraine. We have started making our own version of the Ukrainian flag in craft sessions which will be displayed in reception.

Easter decorating and celebrations

Residents had a great time making up Easter baskets and designing Easter bonnets to make both the home and ourselves look festive.

Easter spirit with penpals

Our penpals at Larkspur Community Primary school were overjoyed to hear from South Chowdene residents with a return letter enclosed in handmade Easter cards. South Chowdene residents loved the cards sent in return from the primary children as well as Palm crosses from Father George and St Andrews church, Lamesley.

The Astor's at Cliveden

Our residents came together to enjoy an exciting virtual talk courtesy of the team at National Trust Talks Service.  The illustrated talk took us closer to one of Cliveden’s most famous families, the Astors. Our residents were able to discover what motivated William Waldorf Astor, America’s richest man, to purchase Cliveden in 1893 and how the estate became the centre of high society in the 1920 s and 30 s thanks to his son Waldorf and daughter in law Nancy Astor.

The Collection

We had a lovely time joining Holly and Marie-Therese from the Wallace Collection, for a virtual introduction to the Collection, followed by a sensory exploratory walk through one of the museum’s most famous landscape paintings.   The Collection ranges from Old Master paintings to 18th century French furniture, arms and armour.  We all had a wonderful time and cannot wait to put our creative skills to a test and paint some landscapes in the upcoming days.

St Patrick's Day

We made Irish cream tiffin and St Patrick bake for the tea trolley. Lynn made us a delicious Irish stew, there was fiddle music and a ‘green quiz’ as well as St Patrick’s bingo – as well as the odd Guinness.
