Activities at South Chowdene Care Home

Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!

Niki Powell

Activities Coordinator

I arrange meaningful activities for all of our residents based on their likes and interests. I love sharing fun times with our residents, their families and with staff. I thoroughly enjoy chatting with residents about their hobbies/interests as well as reminiscing in small groups.

Our activities extend beyond the home with trips to places of interest, places residents have enjoyed throughout their lives eg. Seaside, parks, garden centers, as well as craft/ art workshops at libraries and general interest talks around the area.

Life at South Chowdene Care Home

Pen-pals

Once again we have the privilege of writing to children from Larkspur Primary School. Residents sent ‘Happy New Year’ postcards and have received in return some beautifully decorated and written letters from the youngsters. We look forward to finding out a bit more about our new friends

Chinese New Year

South Chowdene residents and staff were fascinated as to which animal corresponded to their year of birth and what this meant. This information helped decorate the seasons tree and residents took great pride in producing ‘Chinese lanterns’ to decorate the home helping our celebrations for Year of the Tiger. These were also enhanced by some delicious dishes made by our fantastic chef Babs.

Valentine's celebrations

As ever, this was a key day for chat and reminiscence with many a good story about romantic gestures gone wrong (and right). Residents took the opportunity to decorate the seasons tree and shared pictures of themselves and their partner.

We also managed a game or two of Valentine Bingo and a quiz to see just who was the most romantic resident.

South Chowdene Care Home in Low Fell have teamed up with Larkspur Community Primary School for a newly launched pen pal scheme, connecting residents within their homes with creative writing pupils.

Residents of South Chowdene Care Home, which is run by Barchester Healthcare, have been sharing their stories of the past with year four students, and making new friends in the inter-generational scheme.

Nescafe virtual experience

We had a fabulous time joining NESCAFÉ’s virtual coffee experience. We were able to look into how they sustainably farm their coffee beans, as well as, to have a virtual tour of one of their factories all from the comfort of our home.

To make things even more interesting, our residents had the chance to test their knowledge with an interactive quiz, and to the delight of all to taste the signature Sweet Cinnamon Shaken Iced Coffee cocktail.

Delicious treats

We had a lovely time joining Chef Alex Connell from Vegetarian for Life for a Valentine’s-inspired virtual cookery demonstration.  Chef Alex created some delicious Valentine’s Day-inspired vegetarian desserts, which our residents had the opportunity to try too.

First, our residents sampled a wonderful sticky toffee pudding, which was absolutely heavenly. Then they tried hazelnut truffles which were a huge hit and finally they were treated to a chocolate orange cake which everyone adored.
