Activities at Melbourn Springs Care Home

Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is a major focus of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat will always be welcomed.

Denise Ashby

Activities Coordinator

Hello, my name is Denise and I am the Activities Coordinator here at Melbourn Springs. I joined Barchester in 2022 and always strive to support and care for all of our residents in a way that best suits each individual.

Making sure that our residents have things to do that they really enjoy doing is something that I hold very close to my heart. It is so important to make sure that they are happy and enjoy all of the activities and events that we host for them.

A lot of our residents also enjoy our special trips out on our Mini Bus as we create new, special memories together at Melbourn Springs.

Home communities named and competition winner announced

Congratulations to Lynn Travis of Cambridge Road, Melbourn - winner of our home community naming competition at Melbourn Springs.

There were a high number of entries to choose the community names but Lynn based her choices very much on local history and tradition. She said, “As Melbourn was famous for all its fruit picking and beautiful orchards there could only be one choice for me – apples. The communities are named Ashmead, Bramley, Crispin, Elstar and Braeburn.”

As her prize Lynn received a £250 cheque that she will donate to Melbourn Area Youth Development. This organisation offers Youth Club Services as a unique collaborative project between Melbourn, Meldreth, Fowlmere and Shepreth Parish Councils, providing young people with life skills, counselling and fun activities that support independence and well-being.

Melbourn Springs General Manager, Karen Allen said, “We have been overwhelmed by the support from the local community since we arrived in Hyacinth Drive. As the home is named after the springs at the Bury and there is a nod to Duxford in the home design it seemed the perfect fit to select Lynn’s choice as we honour Melbourn’s agricultural history in our beautiful new home.”

The home’s marketing suite - open Tuesday to Sunday between 10am -5pm and on Thursday from 12pm - 8pm has already become a community meeting point - with many groups and organisations from Melbourn and surrounding villages being welcomed there for events and regular meetings. Teas and tours are always available at Melbourn Springs!

Home Services Advisor Dan Amis said: “Community engagement is an essential part of how we integrate our residents into their new home and help them get to know the neighbours around them as well as keep in touch with the people they have always known. Our doors will be open to all – Melbourn Springs will be a home just like any other in the village and everyone is welcome.”

Royston Cave Arts Project

Dan our Home Services Advisor attended a presentation by Ellen Nowak from Kettle's Yard, Cambridge who are working with Marcus Coates to create a new arts project in Royston.

A group of local residents has been formed to use Royston Cave as a place to approach problem solving in imaginative ways and Marcus has been taking the group through some of his techniques to find insight into questions we find difficult to answer.

Marcus has had experience working in this way for many clients including City Hall (London), Tokyo City Council, the Mayor of Holon (Israel), The Mayor of Stavanger (Norway) and numerous business and community groups.

As requested - Dan popped down a question that the group are going to explore and the whole team at Melbourn Springs and our residents cannot wait to get involved to support the project which will be producing a film too!

On Tuesday 11th February between 5pm - 7pm at Royston Town Hall, the project are hosting a session for those aged 16 -19 to get involved creatively in the project - be it film making or even acting!

To book your place and to find out more about this amazing project please contact ellen@kettlesyard.cam.ac.uk

Christmas cheer at Morrisons, Royston

Our Home Services Advisor Dan was out and about spreading the Christmas cheer at our Melbourn Springs pop up event in Morrisons, Royston. Staff and shoppers were in a really jolly mood, the carols were playing and many visitors enjoyed a cheeky chocolate (or two) as they met Dan and had their questions answered about Melbourn Springs. Dan was also able to show imagery hot of the press and as you can see the countdown to our home grand opening has well and truly begun.

All of us here at Melbourn Springs would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a truly blessed Christmas and a happy and healthy 2020. We look forward to welcoming you all very soon at Melbourn Springs in the new year.
