Activities at Lochduhar Care Home

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Life at Lochduhar Care Home

International Women's Day

Residents at Lochduhar Care Home in Dumfries marked International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8th by attending a special afternoon tea to celebrate the achievements of wonderful trail-blazing women throughout history.

IWD takes place on March 8 every year to celebrate women’s rights and inspire people to fight for gender equality.  A United Nations-sanctioned global holiday, IWD celebrates women’s contributions to society, raises awareness about the fight for gender parity and inspires support for organisations that support women globally.

Residents took part in discussions about the role of the many different women who have shaped history from Cleopatra and Boudica to Florence Nightingale and Marie Curie right through to the Queen and Mrs Thatcher.  They talked about the important women in their own lives and celebrated the achievements of their fellow residents.

Daffodils

Residents have been showing their creative sides with creating colourful daffodils, bunting, leeks all made from pipe cleaners.  There was a lot of laughter to be heard throughout the home.

Virtual coffee experience

We had a fabulous time joining NESCAFÉ’s virtual coffee experience.

We were able to look into how they sustainably farm their coffee beans, as well as, to have a virtual tour of one of their factories all from the comfort of our home.

To make things even more interesting, our residents had the chance to test their knowledge with an interactive quiz, and to the delight of all to taste the signature Sweet Cinnamon Shaken Iced Coffee cocktail.

Heavenly cookery demo

We had a lovely time joining Chef Alex Connell from Vegetarian for Life for a Valentine’s-inspired virtual cookery demonstration.  Chef Alex created some delicious Valentine’s Day-inspired vegetarian desserts, which our residents had the opportunity to try too.

First, our residents sampled a wonderful sticky toffee pudding, which was absolutely heavenly. Then they tried hazelnut truffles which were a huge hit and finally they were treated to a chocolate orange cake which everyone adored.

World Wetlands Day

Residents of Lochduhar took to the road to enjoy a trip to Glencaple Harbour. Everyone liked looking at the small boats in the harbour and some old wrecks too, as the tide was fast approaching.  Looking up at the estuary the scenery was beautiful.  During the trip we also saw some ducks, and swans in a field on the way back into Dumfries.  It was a lovely trip out!

Residents enter Jubilee Pudding competition

Residents of Lochduhar are looking forward to celebrating HM Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and started their celebrations by coming together to enter Fortnum and Mason Jubilee Pudding competition.

The winning pudding will be an important part of the celebrations marking Her Majesty’s 70 years as Monarch. And the creator of the winning pudding will be invited to be at the center of the celebrations. The recipe will be gifted to The Queen and the public as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.  It was a fun afternoon for all!
