Activities at Lochduhar Care Home

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

A bundle of cards

Residents at Lochduhar received lots of christmas cards following our challenge. The latest cards were received from 2 secondary schools.  Thank you to pupils at Dumbarton Academy for sending our residents Christmas wishes. Their card was designed by S3 pupil Kali Robertson @Dumbarton_Acad. We also received hand drawn cards from Dumfries High School S1 pupils. Thank you all the pupils who took time to send these. It's lovely to know that the older generation are in the thoughts of the younger generation especially at this time of year!

National Robin Day

Last week we marked National Robin Day. The day helps to raise awareness for these little birds and how we can help them through the cold winter months that they are associated with.  The idea is that everyone will do something small to help the birds through the winter whether it be creating a wildlife friendly space in your garden, filling up a bird feeder or simply throwing out some crumbs for food! Sadly we didn’t see any real robins in the garden when we went to look so we had to make do with our ornamental one. #nationalrobinday

Community gift

We have kindly been donated some twiddle muffs from the Butterfly Legacy Project. For those of you who don’t know what a twiddle muff is, it’s a sensory activity for residents with dementia. It is well known that often people with dementia suffer from “restless hands” and need an activity to keep them busy and active.

The twiddle muffs offer different textures with the main body being knitted and then adorned with ribbons, beads, zips and buttons.  Thank you to Jackie and the team for their donation! #butterflylegacyproject

Festive baking

Residents from our Memory Lane community enjoyed a little festive baking in the popular group activity.  Residents whipped up delicious home-made mince pies and a selection of scones.  Once baked, everyone settled down to enjoy them over a cup of tea.

Magic of the Nutcracker

We experienced the magic of the Nutcracker with a special interactive workshop led by English National Ballet Associate Artists.

Our residents were able to take a magical journey thorough Edwardian London and to learn more about the enchanted Nutcracker characters: Clara, the Mouse King, and her valiant Nutcracker doll.   The session included a chair-based dance workshop, clips of the ballet on stage and a Christmas carol sing-along, truly enjoyed by all.

Chocolate truffles

We had a lovely time joining Paul Hawkins and Steve Wilkes from Unilever for an exciting immersive Christmas experience.

Our residents were welcomed with chocolate treats as Paul and Steve took them on an exciting chocolate truffle making and biscuit decorating journey.

To finish off the Christmas special event, our residents enjoyed a themed quiz and a singalong.

We all had a wonderful time.
