Activities at Highview House Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Aiden Wylie

Lead Activities Coordinator

Hello, my name is Aiden Wylie, and I am Head Activities Coordinator here at Highview House.  My job is to ensure a mentally and physically challenging and varied calendar of activities.  I want to involve all our residents in a warm and welcoming environment.

My career has been in education and I have lived in countries as diverse as Japan and Iraq, but in 2022 I came to Highview with the ambition of offering a range of activities, trips and entertainment which lead to lasting memories and experiences.

Balloon Fiesta

After seeing beautiful pictures of the wonderful balloon fiesta celebrated each year in Bristol, Residents of Highview showed their creative sides as they created their own version of the hot air balloons by creating their own mini festival.  The balloons have been hung around the home and brightened up the surroundings.

Residents had lots of fun, cutting, sticking and creating their colourful balloons which are hung from their windows.  Residents also released a colourful display into the air in the hope that people would get in touch to let them know how far they travelled!

Creative dance workshop

We celebrated International Youth Day virtually with English National Ballet’s youth dance company, ENBYouthCo and their Creative Director, Richard Bermange.

We had the opportunity to watch A Comedy in Long-shot, participate in a chair-based creative dance workshop and observe an open rehearsal where Richard and the young dancers created a performance inspired by our childhood memories.

It was a wonderful experience, enjoyed by all.

International Beer Day tasting

This afternoon a few of our residents enjoyed tasting some of the different types of beer as part of the homes celebration of International Beer Day.  There was a good selection of local beers brewed around the highlands, as well of some of the more common ones you find in the supermarkets.

There were some funny faces being pulled when the beer tasting was underway which brought amusement to everyone and showed a good indication that certain beers weren’t very good! Everyone really enjoyed the afternoon and are looking forward to the next themed event.

Club culture with V&A Dundee

We had a lovely time joining V&A Dundee curator, Kirsty Hassard, as she introduced us virtually to the history and design of night clubs and the club culture from the 1960s to present day.

We explored the evolution and development of night clubs around the world, from Italy to America, and closer to home, looked at their importance as cultural venues and designed spaces.

This current exhibition celebrates night clubs at a very important moment, as we all look to a brighter future where everyone can come back together, to dance and to enjoy nights out once again.

We all enjoyed the virtual talk.

A day at the beach!

On the 4th August two of our residents enjoyed a day at Nairn beach, where they enjoyed a picnic lunch followed by refreshing ice cream. After lunch they enjoyed a little paddle in the sea, with carer, Helen testing the water first, this raised a lot of laughter watching Helen brave the cold water!

The day brought back some beautiful memories for our residents as it had been a long time since they had a paddle in the sea and everyone shared stories of their time spent at the beach and their favourite seaside resorts. It was a wonderful day for all!

Anyone for croquet?

Residents at Highview took advantage of the glorious sunshine to spend time in the homes garden and whilst outdoors enjoyed an afternoon of croquet, before tucking into a delicious afternoon tea especially prepared by the homes hospitality team accompanied with a glass of prosecco to toast their win!  It was a wonderful way to spend the day.
