Activities at Fountains Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Oomph activity books

Activity books are a great way to keep our minds busy. With a variety of topics, word games, challenges and mindfulness colouring pages it’s the perfect way to relax.

Who doesn't love a great puzzle?!

Our residents had great fun socialising, enjoying a cup of tea and sharing in fun together.

Blue Monday

Today is known as ‘Blue Monday’. For some this can be a difficult day with feelings of loneliness or sadness.

Here at Fountains we ensure that we are always providing the most person centred activities for all of our residents through big activities or smaller ones.

And today we did just that… Margaret has always lived a very active lifestyle, from walking holidays with her sister to gardening and visiting local parks. Spending time in the fresh air is where Margaret is happiest.

So we relaxed in the glorious sunshine, felt the sun on our face, shared stories and enjoyed our time together.

Mindfulness Art Class

Fountains residents had a wonderfully relaxing morning taking part in a Mindfulness Art Class.

Our residents love any opportunity to be artistic so this was a perfect activity for them.

This weeks session was all about ‘The Seasons’. We began with a discussion of our favourite time of year and we started from there.

Whilst listening to some classical piano music our residents created their beautiful designs, I think you will all agree they are fantastic!

Saqib Bhatti MP and Prime Minister wish Edna a Happy 100th Birthday

Speaking in the first PMQs after Christmas recess, Saqib Bhatti, MP for Meriden, took the opportunity to wish Edna, resident of Barchester Healthcare’s Fountains Care Home in Shirley, Solihull, a happy 100th birthday whilst thanking not just the care workers who looked after her, but also all the care workers in the Meriden constituency who work tirelessly to take care of the most vulnerable in society.

When Saqib visited Edna recently, he asked her the secret to a long life to which she replied that she has always lived by the mantra: 'God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, to have courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.'

Speaking in the House of Commons on Wednesday:

“Last week, my constituent, Edna Constable, turned 100 years old. She lived through the Second World War, and now, of course, she is living through a pandemic"

"Will my Right Hon. Friend join me in wishing her a belated happy birthday?"

"Will he pay tribute to the care workers who are taking care of her, not just in Fountains Care Home, but across my constituency, and across the rest of the country, who go over and above to protect the most vulnerable in our society?"

The Prime Minister took the opportunity to reinforce Saqib's message:

"Can I thank him very much and say, I want to thank all the staff at Fountains Care Home and everything that they have been doing to look after people throughout the pandemic.

"But in particular, I want to join my Hon. Friend in wishing the centenarian, Edna, a very, very happy 100th birthday."

Edna Constable remarked that she felt very special hearing her name mentioned in Parliament and thanked Saqib for the birthday message. She added that she did not expect any fuss at all but was very grateful for the lovely birthday she enjoyed.

World Religion Day 2022

Fountains residents enjoyed celebrating World Religion Day this week .

We began our celebrations a little early this year as it is held on the third Sunday in January every year.

World religion day is a day to promote understanding and peace between all religions, encouraging people to learn about other faiths.

Here at Fountains our residents enjoy sharing in prayer together at our regular services so today we decided to spend the day learning about other religions.

We began with Islam, our residents very much enjoyed learning about the 5 pillars and a discussion of the beautiful places of worship.

We then practiced some meditation from Buddhism, our residents found it very soothing and relaxing. We even took our practice out into the fresh air during our daily walk.

We ended our day of celebrations with a creative art session putting together our themed display board.

It lead to a very interesting discussion about ‘what religion means to me’. We shared stories of visiting churches, singing hymns and reminiscing on prayers.

It certainly was a day well spent. One we look forward to celebrating next year.

Documentary Time

Here at Fountains we love our nature documentaries. Today we began a new series - David Attenborough’s ‘Green Planet’.

Our residents were amazed at the camera footage, the beauty of the plants, and how fantastic our planet is.

Afterwards we had our own discussion about plants, flowers, gardening and how much we look forward to making ours colourful again.

We look forward to continuing with the series next week too.
