Activities at Fordmill Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Julia Constandache

Senior Activities Coordinator

I’m Julia and I have been working at Fordmill since December 2016. I really enjoy art and studied Graphic Design & Illustration in Dundee. I love being with people and using my skills to improve their quality of life and bring a smile to their faces through crafts, games and all sorts of other activities.

I plan out the activities, either for groups or individuals, according to specific needs and interests. It’s a real joy to get to know residents and their loved ones and I’m grateful to Barchester for giving me the opportunity to work with them and bring some sunshine into the residents’ lives.

Life at Fordmill Care Home

Christmas cake competition

The taste buds were tingling when Residents of Fordmill cut into their Barchester Christmas cake competition entry and were amazed to see Santa’s belt incorporated into their design.

The cake creation was a wonderful light and airy sponge and Residents enjoyed every mouth-watering piece with their cup of tea.  Good luck Fordmill on your entry!

Christmas Countdown

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas for Residents at Fordmill as they count down to Christmas. The decoration are up creating a magical feel throughout and the homes activities coordinator, Julia has shown her creative strike by creating a very special advent calendar for residents and staff.   We look forward to opening our surprise each day!

St Andrews Day celebrations

Fordmill Nursing Home in Montrose celebrated St Andrews Day on Monday 30th November.

To mark St Andrews Day, activities organiser Julia Constandache invited local piper Sandy to the home. This year was slightly different due to the covid19 restrictions and instead of coming indoors he walked around the perimeter of the building piping for the residents who were able to see him from their windows!!

Mary Nielson, a resident at Fordmill Nursing Home, said: “It is important that we all celebrate St Andrews day together, many of the other residents that live with me have Scottish roots and so we love to celebrate with them”.

Chocolate delight for Residents

On a cold wet afternoon, Fordmill hosted a special afternoon tea for everyone.  The tea consisted of homemade mouth-watering cakes and resident favourite treats made by the homes hospitality team and accompanied by a cup of warming hot chocolate and marshmallows which went down a treat!

Some Residents chose different combinations such as just the hot chocolate or a tipple of a glass of sherry.

Aileen Alberts, General Manager said, “The festivities have officially begun!”

Residents remember the fallen

Residents and colleagues at Fordmill in Montrose commemorated Remembrance Sunday on Sunday 8th November, and joined the rest of the United Kingdom in holding a two-minute silence at 11.00 am.

As well as marking Remembrance Day by wearing poppies and watching the televised service, due to the global pandemic Residents were unable to visit their local cenotaph to commemorate the members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty, so it was even more poignant.  The homes life enrichment team in the lead up to Remembrance provided an array of themed activities, poppy making, sharing stories of loved ones who had bravely fought and much more!

Kindness is contagious

Residents at Fordmill received 2 parcels with boxes of various items, games etc. from the Tayside Health Fund in conjunction with NHS Charities as part of World Kindness Day. This was very much appreciated by the residents and Barbara, Resident said : ‘It feels like Christmas morning opening all the boxes to find out what they contain”.

Whilst Margaret, Resident added “It is acts like these that come out of the blue that help as get through this difficult time we are all living in and reminds us that even if we can’t see people we are not forgotten”.

Every resident received one item according to their different needs and abilities. The items are much appreciated by the residents and staff as they are able through them to connect and help to stimulate memories from different times in their life.   It is lovely to watch some of the residents using some of the items such Sensory Game with tactile tiles and try to decide what they think they are touching and some of the guessing are very amusing. They are particularly well used on 1-1s interaction and open conversation with people that is not easy to find subjects to talk to.
