Activities at Cubbington Mill Care Home

Every day we run different activities throughout our home. The activities are designed and adapted to each individuals personal needs. The activities are designed to mentally and physically stimulate the people we care for and also to enhance their life skills and feelings of purpose and self-worth. The activities encourage interaction on a one to one basis, in small groups, in large groups and some are designed for the whole home including staff to be involved in.

We are registered with the National Activity Providers Association (NAPA) which ensures we are able to achieve and continually progress to enhance the quality of life for those we support in the home. We provide entertainers such as singers, musicians, magicians, puppeteers, poets and dancers. We also have regular exercise classes and arts and craft classes. Relatives and visitors will be able to see what me make in these classes on display around the home. We have regular trips out on the mini bus to visit garden centres, enjoy high tea, visit the butterfly farm and spend the day at the zoo with a picnic. We encourage the local community, schools, colleges and relatives to come and join us for activities, tea and cake and to visit to share their skills as much as possible.

Staff from across the home are always willing to help and share their knowledge and skills across a whole range of activities we have had everything from carers preforming Bollywood style dancing to cooking classes from the chef. We feel activities are a vital part of the residents lives to ensure they are stimulated mentally and entertained.

Gingerbread and Truffles with Unilever

We had a lovely time joining Paul Hawkins and Steve Wilkes from Unilever for an exciting immersive Christmas experience.

Our residents were welcomed with chocolate treats as Paul and Steve took them on an exciting chocolate truffle making and biscuit decorating journey. With the help of Head Chef, Oliver residents rolled and cut out gingerbread shapes before decorating with colourful icing.

Whilst waiting for their biscuits to bake residents enjoyed a themed quiz. They scored 7/7 in the first round which had them reminiscing on King George V’s first ever Christmas broadcast and what coin was traditionally put inside of the Christmas pudding! To finish off the Christmas special event our residents enjoyed a singalong to all their favourite festive tunes.

We all had a wonderful time.

Pony 'Bracken' has a Show Round

Our residents were delighted to have a visit yesterday from 'Bracken' the festive pony with handler Jules from a stables in Warwick.

Bracken was very well behaved on his 'show round' the home, he trotted through saying hi, and gave our residents the opportunity to stroke him as he popped his head through each door.

Pony therapy has been known to reduce blood pressure and overall cardiovascular health. Seeing Bracken certainly made our residents smile.

Crazy Kiln Pottery

On the 7th day of Christmas our Activities Team gave to me a visit from ‘Crazy Kiln’ Pottery!

Our ladies love crafting and had a wonderful time designing and hand painting clay Christmas decorations from DIY kits which will be picked up by Ali and Becky from Crazy Kiln who will glaze and fire in their Kenilworth based ceramic studio before returning to the home ready for display on our tree.

Goldfinch Christmas Bauble-Making

Our residents were treated to an interactive virtual Christmas bauble-making masterclass courtesy of the very talented Jennifer Owen at Goldfinch Floral Studio

Founded by Jennifer, Goldfinch is a floral design studio based in central Somerset that prides itself on delivering out of the ordinary flowers to people who are craving something a bit different.

Jen's style is eclectic and wild. A keen traveller with constant wanderlust, Jen draws inspiration from the trips she has taken over the years to Asia and the Middle East and her time spent living in Scandinavia to fuel the creative process resulting in arrangements that are a fusion of the exotic and British eccentricity.

In the UK growing months the vast majority of the flowers that Jen sources are from local growers, most no further than ten miles from her base and where possible she avoids using floral foam and plastics.

During the workshop, residents were invited to join Jennifer to make unique, hand-made Christmas baubles to gift to friends and relatives or to hang on the home’s Christmas tree. The baubles were filled with beautiful dried flowers and grasses to create simple yet stunning decorations.

Goldfinch’s founder, Jennifer Owen, said; “Delivering workshops like this is absolutely the best part of my job. I just love helping people create something beautiful and seeing how much they gain from the experience. These baubles are such a simple thing to do but so effective when you see them hanging from the tree. I’m so glad I was able to work with the Barchester residents today, we all had a wonderful afternoon together.”

General Manager, Dimpho Kavanagh, said: “It was wonderful that our residents were able to follow along and create their own Christmas baubles using all sorts of faux and dried flowers. It was a fantastic afternoon, we’re so grateful to Jen from Goldfinch for giving our residents this experience.”
