Activities at Cubbington Mill Care Home

Every day we run different activities throughout our home. The activities are designed and adapted to each individuals personal needs. The activities are designed to mentally and physically stimulate the people we care for and also to enhance their life skills and feelings of purpose and self-worth. The activities encourage interaction on a one to one basis, in small groups, in large groups and some are designed for the whole home including staff to be involved in.

We are registered with the National Activity Providers Association (NAPA) which ensures we are able to achieve and continually progress to enhance the quality of life for those we support in the home. We provide entertainers such as singers, musicians, magicians, puppeteers, poets and dancers. We also have regular exercise classes and arts and craft classes. Relatives and visitors will be able to see what me make in these classes on display around the home. We have regular trips out on the mini bus to visit garden centres, enjoy high tea, visit the butterfly farm and spend the day at the zoo with a picnic. We encourage the local community, schools, colleges and relatives to come and join us for activities, tea and cake and to visit to share their skills as much as possible.

Staff from across the home are always willing to help and share their knowledge and skills across a whole range of activities we have had everything from carers preforming Bollywood style dancing to cooking classes from the chef. We feel activities are a vital part of the residents lives to ensure they are stimulated mentally and entertained.

St Patrick's Day Celebrations

Residents and staff at Cubbington Mill celebrated all things Irish for St Patrick’s Day this week. The home was decorated with shamrocks and everyone dressed in green to mark the day.

Held on March 17th, Saint Patrick's Day actually observes the death of St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, but the day has come to be a huge celebration of Irish heritage and culture.

Staff and residents at the home marked the day by enjoying a game of ‘twenty-five’ a traditional Irish card game with members of the Cards Club, decorating the home with shamrock decorations and listening to their favourite country and western songs. Head chef Oliver Hopkins prepared a fantastic Irish spread of traditional Irish dishes such as soup with soda bread, followed by Guinness cake pudding, all washed down with a Guinness or an Irish whiskey at the pub experience in the afternoon.

General Manager, Laura Russell said: “Our residents have all had a brilliant day today, everyone has enjoyed the festivities – I think we all agree St Patrick’s Day is the best of all the saints days! We had a fantastic time listening to Irish music and watching Irish dancing, we sampled some lovely Irish whiskeys too.”

Bruce, resident at Cubbington Mill said: “It has been a lovely day. I really liked making the shamrock decorations and the pub experience as we sang and danced to Irish music.”

British Pie Week

Staff and residents at Cubbington Mill had a fantastic time celebrating #BritishPieWeek, a brilliant excuse to sample lots of delicious fare.

Over the course of the week, head chef worked hard baking pies filled with many different types of pie fillings and flavour combinations, from more traditional meat and vegetable fillings to vegetarian and vegan offerings, hot and spicy fillings, and sweet pies and pastries - this week has certainly been a veritable pie-filled feast!

John, a resident said: “I absolutely love pies! I don’t mind if it is sweet or savoury, there is just something so satisfying about a pie – whether it is served with gravy or ice cream! We have had loads of meat and veggie pies to sample and then some fantastic sweet ones with all kinds of different fruit fillings. It has all been truly delicious!”

OAP Association Social Event

Today residents at Cubbington Mill joined neighbours and friends from the local community for the Cubbington and District OAP Association snack and chat afternoon.

The Association is a charity run by volunteers which aims to provide a sociable, interactive community for people aged over 60. Residents enjoyed a lovely walk through the village and arrived at the village hall where they were greeted by friendly faces from the club. They had the chance to play dominos and other board games, but most importantly, talk to like-minded people, share stories, and make new friends!

General Manager of the home, Dimpho Kavanagh said: “The OAP Association is a wonderful group which encourages members in the local area to meet and connect with one another regularly. We are so happy that residents are able to get involved and join in the fun! We look forward to inviting members to events at Cubbington Mill in the future.”

Welsh Cakes for St David's Day

Cubbington Mill residents were in high spirits as they celebrated the national day of Wales with a cooking demonstration from Head Chef, Oliver. In honour of the traditional feast day and the country’s patron saint, residents and staff were also treated to traditional Welsh food and drink alongside the homemade Welsh Cakes.

Mea, resident at Cubbington Mill said: “It has been a lovely day. It was wonderful to see everyone go to so much effort to get involved with the day’s celebrations. I really enjoyed getting stuck into making the Welsh Cakes as I had never tried them before!”

Virtual Coffee Cocktail Making

Staff and residents were treated to live coffee masterclass courtesy of Catherine Woodruff and Paul Vernon from one of the world’s most iconic brands, Nescafé this afternoon.

They were invited to think back as far as 1938 to when Nescafé was first created, and hear about how the brand has been at the heart of the nation’s homes ever since. Catherine and Paul hosted a fascinating talk about how Nescafé has grown over time to become the biggest coffee distributor in the world, how they sustainably farm their coffee beans and they gave residents a virtual tour of one of their factories. There was an interactive quiz where residents put their coffee knowledge to the test before Catherine and Paul demonstrated how to make some delicious coffee cocktails, which everyone got to sample.

General Manager, Dimpho Kavanagh, said: “What a wonderfully coffee-filled afternoon we’ve all had, our residents have grown up drinking Nescafé so they were really interested to hear all about how the brand first came about and how it has become a global name. We’re so grateful to Paul, Catherine and Nescafé for hosting this event and showing us how to make delicious coffee cocktails!”

50 Years since 'Decimal Day'

This February marked 50 years since Britain’s currency became decimal - introducing the coins and system we use today. Known as ‘D-Day’, for Decimal Day, the change effected the entire nation, bringing people together as they learnt to master a new currency.

To mark the occasion, The Royal Mint Museum has created 45 miniature museums packed with replica and original items from decimalisation – including pre-decimal coins, government posters, and newspapers from 1971. Each object contains a micro-chip which, when placed on the box, plays audio clips and tells an aspect of the story of the changeover.

Here are our residents sharing their precious memories with each other thanks to The Royal Mint interactive memory boxes!
