Activities at Cubbington Mill Care Home

Every day we run different activities throughout our home. The activities are designed and adapted to each individuals personal needs. The activities are designed to mentally and physically stimulate the people we care for and also to enhance their life skills and feelings of purpose and self-worth. The activities encourage interaction on a one to one basis, in small groups, in large groups and some are designed for the whole home including staff to be involved in.

We are registered with the National Activity Providers Association (NAPA) which ensures we are able to achieve and continually progress to enhance the quality of life for those we support in the home. We provide entertainers such as singers, musicians, magicians, puppeteers, poets and dancers. We also have regular exercise classes and arts and craft classes. Relatives and visitors will be able to see what me make in these classes on display around the home. We have regular trips out on the mini bus to visit garden centres, enjoy high tea, visit the butterfly farm and spend the day at the zoo with a picnic. We encourage the local community, schools, colleges and relatives to come and join us for activities, tea and cake and to visit to share their skills as much as possible.

Staff from across the home are always willing to help and share their knowledge and skills across a whole range of activities we have had everything from carers preforming Bollywood style dancing to cooking classes from the chef. We feel activities are a vital part of the residents lives to ensure they are stimulated mentally and entertained.

Halloween Theme Creativity

Our residents were so pleased with their artwork today, and loved the addition of ghoulish masks for their photographs. Today we send 'big thanks' to the brilliant Creative Mojo Ltd for their Halloween themed 'In Home' workshop at Cubbington Mill.

Halloween Scarecrow

Residents have been getting busy making a scarecrow for this year’s pumpkin patch. Our handy maintenance man, Waldemar built the scarecrow structure, the hay was supplied by a local farm in Hunningham and using an old carer’s uniform they got to work stuffing the clothing and creating this life size spooktacular scarecrow!

Our scarecrow has pride of place next to our pumpkin patch, his head and our resident crafted pumpkins will be on show later tonight. We hope to see lots of pumpkins arriving and ready for judging by our residents! Prizes will be given to the scariest carvings and winners announced next week.

We would love to see all your Halloween costumes tonight as you trick or treat. You’ll find a container full of sweets at the side of the home, in return please take a selfie outside and send it to Cubbington.Activities@barchester.com so we can show residents all your wonderful outfits!

Pets As Therapy - Appoint Us Services

Residents enjoyed a visit from a pet therapy dog who came to visit the home this afternoon. They were pleasantly surprised to see Border collie; Belle and her owner Emily from Appoint Us Services as they joined us for an afternoon of fun!

General Manager Dimpho Kavanagh said: “Our residents have really enjoyed a visit from Belle today. We are always looking for new activities for the residents and today we have seen the seen the enjoyment and the therapeutic influence animals can have on people.”

Resident Liz was very excited and touched by today’s therapy dog: “I have had dogs all my life and have left three corgis since coming to Cubbington Mill, it is so lovely to be able to meet Belle. There is nothing better than a dog’s cuddle!”

Gentleman’s Club

Our new Gentlemen’s Club has been an absolute success with our residents. The men have been meeting every Tuesday afternoon in the quiet area for a catch up over a pint of beer.

It is important for residents to feel a sense of community in the home and make meaningful friendships. Every Tuesday afternoon our gents have been sharing memories of growing up in the 1950’s, listening to their favourite songs and playing classic pub games. In their latest session they had a go at playing dominos, for many of them it had been years since their last game!

We would love to see some local faces at our next Gent’s Club, if this is something you would be interested in, please let us know by emailing Cubbington.Activities@Barchester.com

Cubbington Mill Welcomes Volunteer Harry

Say Hello to volunteer Harry who recently joined residents for a week of volunteering to support him in his medical science studies – wow!

Throughout the week Harry sat down with residents and learnt all about their lives, reminiscing and talking through their memories. They also had a chance to test their knowledge as they learnt all about Harry’s university studies and what it takes to become a doctor. Harry helped to support the activities in the home and our male residents particularly appreciated a new face at their Tuesday Gent’s Club.

A massive thank you to Harry for dedicating his time to residents at Cubbington Mill and showing genuine compassion and a strong desire to help others, we hope to see you here again in the future.

Have you ever thought about volunteering? You may have a particular skill, such as singing, crafts or yoga, which you want to use to improve the lives of others. You may prefer to offer companionship to residents and come along regularly to sit and chat with people who may not usually receive frequent visitors. There are endless ways to get involved!
