Activities at Ashcombe House Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Michelle Martin

Activities Coordinator

I’m a fun, loud and outgoing individual who loves organising fun activities for residents at Ashcombe House (and staff, if possible). I’m very creative and keep the residents very active, both mentally and physically In my spare time, I love doing a lot of fundraising, which usually ends up with me sliding in mud.

Life at Ashcombe House Care Home

Lest We Forget

To commemorate Remembrance Day, residents and staff were treated to a unique creative workshop from the English National Ballet and joined them with the national two minutes silence. Residents took part in craft activities creating poppy displays and watched the service from the cenotaph. Many of our residents have personal ties to the military and many have experience conflict so to come together and remember all those who gave so much was really important. The afternoon continued with singing from Rosalind O’Dowd.

Open the Book

A team formed from the local churches have been coming together to deliver interactive Bible Stories for our residents. Each week a new story from the Bible is brought to life through a team of Volunteers, props and narration.

Festival of Lights

Diwali is the five-day Festival of Lights, celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world. Diwali, is a festival of new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. We decorated the home with Battery candles to commemorate Diya’s which are small lamps that are traditionally lit at Diwali, colourful bunting, Indian dance and music filled the lounge and rooms. Staff were treated to traditional Indian foods all homemade by our Nurse Anita.

Guide Dog Visit

Ellen Young from Guide Dogs UK came to Ashcombe with her 17 week old guide dog in training, ‘Rod’. Ellen told us about the training each puppy goes through in the first 13-18 months before they graduate to a more intensive training program.

Ellen has volunteered for 30 years for Guide Dogs UK and has raised 32 puppies. Residents enjoyed meeting Rod and it was a good part of his training to meet a group of people in a different environment.

Creative Minds

We were joined by Kayleigh from Creative Minds for an art workshop. Using pastels, paints, pencils and chalks, residents created some beautiful autumn artwork. Art is very relaxing and very good for hand dexterity. The artwork is now framed and displayed in the home.

Summer Virtual Cruise

Residents enjoyed a virtual cruise with an interactive cookery demonstration, taking in mocktails, exotic dishes and mystery destinations, courtesy of Paul Hawkins and Linda Richards from Unilever's away-from-home team. who support the care sector.

The afternoon continued with live singing from Anthony Allgood to celebrate Cliff Richard's birthday with hits through the years. One of our residents had met Sir Cliff himself and even shared a drink with him, so the afternoon brought back lots of wonderful memories.
