Activities at Woodhorn Park Care Home

Activities make up the most important part of all our days at Woodhorn park, so we ensure a variety of social events are available that reflect the interests of all the people we support. In our Memory Lane community, we have group conversations and regularly reminiscence about past experiences, which is something that people living with dementia really enjoy. Many residents love gardening, baking, outings, pet care and gentle exercise, which we provide, along with many other wholesome activities, as it is essential that life at Woodhorn Park is fun and active.

Life at Woodhorn Park Care Home

Resident shared wartime memoirs

Residents of Woodhorn Park enjoyed a step-back in time when one of their residents shared her memoirs which were written over 78-years ago whilst she was serving in the WAFFS. She shared her stories ranging from the rationing of baths to breakouts of measles and mumps. She had residents hooked on her every word whilst they were listening to her read this out.

Memory painting

Residents at Woodhorn Park have enjoyed an afternoon of memory painting with each asked to paint their favourite memories, the colourful displays painted items from with one resident painting her beloved Yorkshire terrier Bruno who she fondly remembers the joy of taking him for adventures on the beach, a gentleman celebrating his love of football to a resident enjoying times spent in the garden surrounded by beautiful flowers. It was a lovely afternoon as residents shared their stories with each other!

National Vegetarian Week

To celebrate National Vegetarian Week, staff and residents at Barchester’s Woodhorn Park care home in Ashington were treated to an interactive virtual cookery demo courtesy of chef, Alex Connell, from Vegetarian for Life.

Chef Alex whipped up some tasty, healthy vegetarian snacks in a live, interactive cookery demo.  Much to residents’ delight, Woodhorn Park head chef had prepared the same recipes so that residents could try all the dishes. Residents sampled delicious, light and summery veggie dishes including Borlotti bean and dill pate, Greek fritters with Tzatziki and Coronation 'chicken' pastries. All finished off with a sweet and simple but totally yummy banana bread.

Hole in one for Residents!

Residents at Woodhorn Park care home, in Ashington, recently enjoyed taking part in their very own “Woodhorn Park Open” Golf tournament. To mark the upcoming National Mini golf day this week, some residents learned new skills and had a go at scoring a birdie for the first time, while it was just a case of getting back in to the “swing” of things for others!

Activities Coordinator Georgia, supported the residents by adapting the activity to suit the resident’s physical capabilities, as well as stepping in as referee! The event was deemed a huge success by all residents and staff, and throughoughly enjoyed by all; but in the end it was the Gent’s that stole the show, claiming 1st, 2nd and 3rd place!
