Activities at Vecta House Care Home

This month residents, family and friends joined us for our country and western event, this event was organised by the homes activities coordinator after spending time with the residents discussing what activities they would like to be held within the home.

The day started with staff and residents decorated with everything from the wild west, from haybale’s bunting stable doors and gold bars. As residents arrived to the event they were greeted with cowboy hats, neckerchief  and a sheriff badge getting everyone into the swing of things. With lot’s of dancing and singing. Hanna Nixon gave everyone an amazing afternoon of entertainment interacting with all the residents throughout. There was delicious hotdogs made by our head chef that went down a treat with onion and mustard.

Everyone had a rootin-tootin time, yeeha!

Residents enjoyed a trip to the classic boat museum in East Cowes.

Residents had a warm welcome from the staff at the museum on arrival, as they entered to get their tickets we met a lovely chap who was their own personal tour guide for the morning. On entering the first section of the museum residents were surrounded in an array of amazing art, models and artifacts and residents  listened attentively  to the maritime stories of the isle of wight. One of our resident In thoroughly enjoyed himself having worked at the J S shipbuilding yard as a young man and told everyone stories of his experience and memories and enjoying the museums display of the shipbuilding yard.

Residents were also fascinated in the history of Jo Carstairs who was featured on the BBC news recently. Jo Carstairs was known as the fastest women on water and the gallery had an outstanding collection of trophy’s Jo had won throughout her life racing early powerboats. Moira a resident at Vecta House enjoyed the gallery of yachts being a keen sailor herself. Thank you to all the staff at the isle of wight classic boat museum for a wonderful morning.

Vecta house had a week of fun during the Get Barchester moving week. With lots of different and fun ways to get moving from taking a walk around the homes beautiful gardens, Chair exercises and yoga, residents staff families and friends joined together to build up the moving minutes. At the end of a fabulous week vecta house held a cheese and wine afternoon for residents and their loved ones. With live music and a selection of delicious cheeses, crackers and fruits while dancing the afternoon away. The Pimm’s was flowing and the sun shining setting of a beautiful scene for a beautiful day. The event was held to raise money for the Barchester charity foundation with donations made by staff and families along with a raffle with the chance of winning a beautiful hamper full of goodies.

At Vecta House staff and residents got ready for a day of celebrations in commemoration of the 80th  anniversary of the  D-Day landings. Residents gathered in the beautiful gardens on a sunny morning to hang bunting ready for the afternoons events with other residents taking part in the mornings reminiscing session where residents discussed there experiences working in the forces and living through the war. Residents in the lounges got comfortable as they watched the tv  D-Day events held in Normandy.

After a morning of remembering residents gathered with staff, families and friends to show respect and thanks to everyone who severed in the war. With live music from Hanna Nixon singing Vera Lynn songs well known during wartime. Residents waved their flags proudly and joined in with singing and dancing while enjoying a selection of refreshments.

International Nurses Day is celebrated on the 12th of May each year to recognise the dedication, commitment and hard work all our nursing team show everyday while caring for our residents.

As a thank you our lovely resident Gill who was a nurse at St Mary's hospital for many years, proudly presented our nurses with a certificate and a small gift as a token of our appreciation with Gill receiving her own certificate and gift as a thank you for her dedication throughout her nursing career.

All our staff go above and beyond and we a very proud of each and everyone of you.

Living with dementia can make it difficult for some residents to get out into the community so we bring the community to them to continue with meaningful activities

One of the community groups we see each month is Reverend Dozie from St. Paul's, Barton who delivers a beautiful church service with prayers and hymns. Today residents joined Michael in his room where the service was held. Michael was reading prayers, singing hymns and took part in holy communion. At the end of the service Michael told us all he felt over the moon with a huge smile on his face.
