Activities at South Grange Care Home

Our specialist activities staff are committed to organising a mix of activities and events for residents and the local community to get involved in, including trips out to local places of interest in our minibus and visits from entertainers and musicians. It is important to us that each individual who we support can get as much from these as possible, so we try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests and capabilities as best as possible, and encourage them to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can.

Dementia Action Week

Staff and residents got involved with Dementia week by creating our own Forget-me-knots for our display. The residents have also got involved in a variety of activities including quizzes, arts & crafts, exercises and going out for daily walks to help keep the brain stimulated.

Dementia is the loss of cognitive functioning – thinking, remembering, reasoning – which can affect a person’s day to day life and activities.  Functions that can be impacted are memory, language skills, visual perception, problem solving, self-management and the ability to focus and pay attention.  The number of people living with dementia in the UK is forecast to increase to over 1m.

Weekly Trishaw Ride

We were so lucky to have had sunny weather for our weekly trishaw rides last week.

Betty, John and staff had a lovely afternoon out with the volunteers of Cycling Without Age Scotland Monifieth enjoying the warm weather with no jackets on. Followed by spending time in the garden with the volunteers soaking up all the sunshine with an ice-lolly, it was well deserved after all that chauffeuring the residents and staff around in the warm weather. The residents love to tell their stories and like to hear theirs too.

Cycling without Age is run by volunteers who take older people and those with mobility difficulties out on ‘trishaw’ cycle rides. Their trishaws are three-wheel cycles with a passenger cab out front and is motor assisted.

Our rides are comfortable, fun and free. They enable people to experience the city and nature close-up from the bicycle. It also helps them regain important social connections.

Our volunteers and passengers enjoy the physical and emotional benefits.

Celebrating Cadbury's

Residents across our services had a wonderful time joining Cadbury for an interactive virtual talk on their fascinating 200-year history.

Residents joining learnt interesting facts about the chocolate giant, shared memories, and reminisced about their favourite sweet treats.

It was a heartwarming experience filled with laughter, nostalgia, and plenty of chocolatey goodness!

Sunflower planting

Residents joined in with our first gardening club of the year, unfortunately it had to be done inside due to the rubbish weather in Scotland. To kick start the first gathering we coincided this with National Sunflower Planting day.

We had a busy afternoon planting our very own individual sunflower seeds for the year ahead. We are looking forward to seeing them grow and flourish into the beautiful flowers they are. Our pots are out in the garden for everyone to see.

May Day concert

Residents and staff at South Grange had a great afternoon celebrating the May Day holiday with live music from popular vocalist, Paul Sullivan. Everyone had a great time getting up to dance and sing-a-long.

Residents and families were joined by members of our local community with resident, Betty and her family making it a special moment between four generations! We were able capture the youngest and oldest members of the family sharing a loving kiss.

We always welcome and encourage families and the local community to join us for our events, It goes to show that age has no boundaries which can be seen in this photograph of a small child and a great grandmother still celebrating together and making more memories.

Couple celebrate 70th wedding anniversary

South Grange resident Beth and her husband David celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Beth met her husband David when he moved to her home town of Inverness for 6 months for his work. They had a lovely white wedding in the Methodist Church followed by their reception at one of the local hotels on the 3rd of April 1954. David’s family and friends travelled to the wedding by bus from Aberdeen, where David lived.

In 1967 David was promoted while working for the GPO and the happy couple moved to Dundee. They have 1 daughter, Linda who all lived happily in the family home that David still lives in. Linda went on to have 2 sons, Mark and Scott whom the couple are very proud of.  Beth says the reason their marriage has lasted 70 years is because David is such a gentlemen.
