Activities at Llys-Y-Tywysog Care Home

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Paula Courtney

Activities Coordinator

Hello I am Paula the Activities Coordinator, I have recently returned to Llys-Y-Tywysog.  I worked at the home for over 5 years when my children were younger.  My close connection with Llys remained as my father in law was former resident, so I was still visiting regularly.  I am delighted to be back working with the team.

I am creative and hope to bring new ideas for activities and events as well as still running firm favourites!  My passion is about enhancing the lives of the residents from individual time through to big celebratory events.  Sarah will continue to work as part of the activities team, working alongside me part time whilst studying for her degree at Swansea University.  As a team we are committed to Barchester's Life Enrichment programme ensuring we work with mind, body and soul.

Life at Llys-Y-Tywysog Care Home

Flower Arranging Session

The residents look forward to flower arranging every month where they can arrange a beautiful bunch of flowers to display in the home. This enables the residents to be creative and use their imagination, it also encourages use of the fingers and hands and is a great stress reliever, promoting a calm atmosphere.

Fruit Kebabs

Fruit kebabs are a fun, refreshing and healthy treat. We went with a combo of our favourite fruits: strawberries, grapes, banana, apple, kiwi fruit and clementine’s. The residents enjoyed picking what fruit they wanted to make their fruit kebab, and enjoyed dipping them into melted chocolate!

Christmas Party

We have thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas Party. Starting the day off with the wonderful Chris Caines and friend who entertained us with all our old time Christmas favourites, in between a load of jokes that had us all giggling.

We then celebrated with a Christmas buffet style party, pulling crackers with friends and loved ones in all our Christmas hat glory.

Mayor Visit

Llys-Y-Tywysog was visited by the Mayor Andrew Stevens, who brought along Toni Antoniazzi (Labour MP), Jan Curtice (Town Councillor) and Richard Davies (Local Area Coordinator). We all enjoyed a tea and tour of the home, and the visitors enjoyed meeting some of the residents.

Spooktacular Day

Residents and staff all enjoyed getting in the Halloween spirit. We started the day off with welsh lessons and cleaning out the pumpkins ready for the afternoon pumpkin carving session. Residents enjoyed a Halloween themed menu for lunch which went down a treat.  The home was visited by a Shetland pony dressed in its fines Halloween Costume. Everyone enjoyed the spooktacular day.

Tributes to Aberfan Disaster

Residents and staff at Llys Y Tywysog Care Home in Grovesend paid tribute to the Aberfan Disaster by visiting the village 53 years after the disaster.

To show our respect and sympathy to the worst disaster that has struck the Welsh community. Llys y Tywysog Care Home’s visit to Aberfan marked the 53rd year anniversary of the disaster that occurred on the 21st October 1966, where the man mad colliery spoil tip slid down the mountain side engulfing Pantglas Junior School and surrounding homes, killing 116 children and 28 adults.

Residents and staff visited both the Memorial Garden where Pantglas Junior School once stood and the Aberfan Cemetery where we took a wreath and placed at the Cemetery in honour and remembrance of the 116 children and 28 adults who were taken before their time on that cold October morning in 1966.

Des Jenkins, one of the residents said “ To look back and remember this terrible tragedy that effected the whole of Wales, it is lovely to be able to come here and show our respect and we should visit Aberfan in memory of all who were lost once every year.”

Sam Williams, Lead Activities Coordinator at Llys y Tywysog said: “I remember coming to Aberfan when I was at school but never completely understood, I just remember seeing children the same age as me on the headstones. Coming back to Aberfan today I have a greater understanding and respect for the Catastrophic disaster and the impact it had on not only the people of Aberfan but the whole of Wales. The way the welsh community all pulled together to support and help each other at that time was so heart warming. It was a privilege to be able to take the residents to Aberfan to commemorate the 53 year anniversary.”
