Activities at Llys-Y-Tywysog Care Home

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Paula Courtney

Activities Coordinator

Hello I am Paula the Activities Coordinator, I have recently returned to Llys-Y-Tywysog.  I worked at the home for over 5 years when my children were younger.  My close connection with Llys remained as my father in law was former resident, so I was still visiting regularly.  I am delighted to be back working with the team.

I am creative and hope to bring new ideas for activities and events as well as still running firm favourites!  My passion is about enhancing the lives of the residents from individual time through to big celebratory events.  Sarah will continue to work as part of the activities team, working alongside me part time whilst studying for her degree at Swansea University.  As a team we are committed to Barchester's Life Enrichment programme ensuring we work with mind, body and soul.

Creative Wreath Making

The residents of Llys-Y-Tywysog enjoyed an afternoon of creativity.  Wool wreaths were made from wool, artificial flowers and decorations while others did collage work creating some stunning dress designs.  The beautiful wreaths and pictures are on display around the home.

Baking Welsh Cakes

Welsh Cakes have been a local favourite since the 19th Century, traditionally baked on a griddle.  Most families have their own secret recipe, with the blend of spices being the big secret.  Llys-Y-Tywysog's residents haven't revealed their recipe, but they certainly enjoyed making them and then enjoying them warm with a cup of tea.

Celebrating Jackson Pollock

Art is a popular relaxing past time residents enjoy at Llys-Y-Tywysog.  Residents celebrated the work of Jackson Pollock who was an American painter and major figure in the post war abstract expressionist movement. The residents watched a video 'How to paint like Jackson Pollock' to prepare for a very creative afternoon of painting, producing some beautiful pieces of art inspired by his style of work.

Café Games

Llys-Y-Tywysog is fortunate to have a number of relaxing lounges, as well as a café which is always popular giving residents’ access to drinks and snacks throughout the day.  We thought this was a great photo of two of residents enjoying a cuppa whilst playing the classic game of Connect 4.

Keeping in Touch

Care Homes like so many of us over the past few months have appreciated the importance and use of technology to stay in touch with loved ones.  Llys-Y-Tywysog uses all the main Apps to enable video calls including WhatsApp, Facetime and Zoom.  The visiting pod remains available to book online, equipped with microphone speaker to aid communication during the visit.   In addition we post regular updates on Facebook, so do like the Barchester Healthcare (Llys-Y-Tywysog Care Home) Page and do tell friends and family about the page so they can also see updates of residents enjoying life in the home.

International Flower Day

Residents at Llys-Y-Tywysog enjoyed International Flower Day, discussing their favourite flowers, scents and how much they enjoy flower arranging.  We are all looking forward to the spring when the bulbs start to flower and residents can start to garden again.  Llys-Y-Tywysog has a large central courtyard garden which may of the rooms overlook with raised beds for residents to cultivate.  Chloe, the Activities Coordinator also prepared a quiz about flowers along with some mindful colouring.
