Activities at Epsom Beaumont Care Home

At Epsom Beaumont, the daily activities always aim to be enjoyable for all. Our Activities Coordinator is constantly working to mentally and physically stimulate each resident and ensuring that our programme is define moulded to the wants and needs of those we support. We host weekly outings to many local coffee shops, and also some bigger trips to Brighton and the Brooklands Museum. Our outings tend to be a new and exciting experience for residents, but are sometimes repeated for those who could not make the trip the first time. The activity schedule changes weekly, but there are some regularities, such as our crossword and bar nights, where families are invited to join their loved ones for a social evening. Activities are one of the most important aspects of a care home and we are proud to say we have a dedicated Activities Coordinator who is supported by all of the care team to really make it successful. We have received excellent feedback from residents and relatives, which only makes our bond with them stronger.

Louisa Capaldi

Activities Coordinator

I always said when I started working I wanted to have a rewarding job that puts a smile on people’s faces and makes their day just that little bit brighter! I started working in the care sector as a hospitality Assistant, and then became a carer and then the activities coordinator. I really enjoy getting the residents up and moving, and getting active. I enjoy learning new things about the residents and doing meaningful activities with them that they enjoy and benefit from.

Life at Epsom Beaumont Care Home

Mother's Day

We had some amazing Mother’s Day celebrations at Epsom Beaumont; our  Head Chef and carers enjoyed a high tea at The Ritz with some jazz music. We organised for residents to Skype with their families.

Epsom Care home Uses Skype to Connect with Loved Ones

Epsom Beaumont Care home recognises that people have basic needs: to feel safe, accepted, loved, and a sense of belonging. They also see that the use of technology in care can help support these needs—as well as improve health and wellbeing. With a vision to enhance care with technology, the organisation has been using Skype in their care home at present time when families aren’t able to see their loved ones on a daily basis due to restrictions and keeping residents safe to tackle corona virus.

Epsom Beaumont continues to use technology in care. They use devices like Amazon Alexa to have story telling sessions which helps them to bolster social inclusion and wellbeing in residents. Make activities fun such as using VR glasses with residents to bring things from outside – inside. Like taking residents on European trips like Rome and Paris. Reminiscing times they spend during their youth. Currently our residents are able to use Skype and Facetime to connect to each other. We are also using social media platforms—including Skype, email, and Facebook—with residents who had never before used social media or a computer. “Skype was the most used and enjoyed platform, as per Nikki Harris our activities coordinator.

“Each of our care homes has tablets for the residents to use. Our residents use these in a variety of ways, including Skype, playing games, and emailing relatives,” says Nikki. “

Residents especially enjoy the ability to contact their friends and family members. “It’s particularly useful when a resident has first moved into a care home,” says Nikki, “as this can be unsettling for the resident and their family.” Many of the success stories speak for themselves.

“We encourage our residents to experiment with technology to find out what works best for them,” Nikki continues. “One of our residents wanted to use Skype to connect with her daughter on a more regular basis. During Skype video calls, our activities team and carers assist residents to ensure they have a relaxed experience stress free.

Enjoying Opera

Here we have Mrs. Marriage on the left enjoying the opera. Two residents coming together to share a beautiful experience, holding hands, supporting each other and having their friendship grow! Mrs.

Marriage’s daughter had informed us that her mum knows many operas, as she’s always listened to them and was a soprano singer when she was in her 20’s. A man had offered to pay for her to be trained at la Scala in Milan, but her mother said no, but it was a good job she did, as she would never had met her husband!

Her family are very happy and pleased she gets to have all these experiences at Epsom Beaumont, as it brings her so much joy and such wonderful memories!

The black and white photo is Mrs. Marriage when she was younger performing herself.

Scrabble Art

Residents of Epsom Beaumont enjoyed using letters from Scrabble to make this ‘word art’, using the words ‘Epsom Beaumont’ to describe how they feel about them home.

Mini Games

Our mini games are very popular here. It’s great fun and great exercise at the same time! We played the Target game. Residents had to throw the ball at the target and it will stick. At the end the most person with the most points won! People get very competitive! We have other mini games such as ‘throw a hoop’, bowling, and golf, throw a beanbag and more! We look forward to staying active and healthy in the New Year!

Barchester Cake Competition

Epsom Beaumont decided to participate in the annual Barchester Cake Competition, which judges cakes submitted from over 200 Barchester homes.

The cakes are marked on presentation, demonstration of cake decorating skills and theme of the cake.

Head Chef of Epsom Beaumont, together with residents, prepared three cakes for the competition. Each cake with filling of: spiced chocolate with brandy butter cream, topped with glace Morello cherries, glazed ginger and edible cinnamon stick.
