Activities at Beeston View Memory Lane Community

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Hi there, I'm Luisa, Activities Co-ordinator at Iddenshall Hall.

I have worked with the elderly over 8 years and also for fifteen years in the social field as an Activities Coordinator for different social groups in three countries. I have a Degree in Social Integration, a Certificate in Theatrical Psychology and a Music Therapy certificate. In the past I have worked for local authorities and in a cerebral palsy home.

My work is very rewarding and it is a pleasure planning events and activities each month. I enjoy interacting with Residents and learning about their interests, preferences and experiences.

Life at Beeston View Memory Lane Community

Our Memory Boxes

Our Memory Boxes

We spent the weekend updating and creating some new memory boxes for our Beeston View residents. Each resident had input on to what was put in their box and they also helped to choose pictures of family and friends and small mementos to include.

The memory boxes form part of our Memory Lane ethos at Beeston View and aid the residents in identifying their own rooms. They also help to trigger memories, so this is always a worthwhile project and an enjoyable one, as it usually sparks some very interesting conversations and we always learn something new about the residents too.

Trip to the Garden Centre

Trip to the Garden Centre

We took a trip to our local garden centre, Okells, this week with some residents. We had a lovely look round at all the flowers and plants and then enjoyed a cuppa and a slice of cake in their café. We took some photographs of the occasion and had a really good natter over our tea and cake, talking about the resident's children, where they used to live and about holidays taken as a child. It was a lovely afternoon.

Vashty's Birthday

Vashty's Birthday

We celebrated Vashty's Birthday recently at Beeston View. Staff and residents sang Happy Birthday to her and helped her to look through all her cards, which she got very emotional reading. We managed to cheer her up and made her realise that birthdays are supposed to be a happy occasion. We gave Vashty a birthday cake, which she really enjoyed eating and sharing with the other residents. We had banners and balloons up for her all day to help put her in the birthday spirit. It was a bit overwhelming for her, so we didn't go overboard with the celebrations so as not to make her too upset. On the whole, Vashty seemed to enjoy the day.

Vera's Birthday

Vera's Birthday

On 19th August, Vera  celebrated her 99th birthday with us at Iddenshall Hall. Vera is a very private lady who didn't want a lot of fuss, so we decorated her bedroom, sang Happy Birthday to her and gave her her cards and presents from family, staff and friends. We reminisced in the morning and she celebrated with family in the afternoon. Happy birthday, Vera!

Italian Day at Beeston View

Italian Day at Beeston View

We held an Italian Day on 18th August at Beeston View. The whole day was based around Italy and residents got a taste of the culture, as we put Italian cuisine on the menu.

They enjoyed foods such as bruschetta with mozzarella and tomato with balsamic dressing, tiramisu, ice cream, pizza - and even indulged in some cappuchinos! We had Italian-themed pictures to colour in throughout the day, and we played Italian music in the afternoon. The units were decorated with coloured balloons and flags and pictures from around Italy, which were a talking point throughout.

Everyone had a great time!

Peter's Birthday

Peter's Birthday

Peter's Birthday fell on the same day as Italian Day, so there was lots going on for him to enjoy and plenty of special food to eat. We sang Happy Birthday and Peter had a cake for afternoon tea, which he shared with all the residents. It was a lovely way for him to spend his special day.
