Activities at Strachan House Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Natasha Rubin

Activities Coordinator

G’day! My name is Natasha and I am the activities lead here at Strachan House. I am Australian born and bred, braving the dark and the cold here in Edinburgh to enjoy the beautiful nature and wonderful people! I have a background in team management and design. I have always loved working with people and have a strong interest in mental health and well-being, recently embarking on a psychology degree with an interest in specialising in Art Therapy. I am working with the team to create a vibrant, engaging and person-centred home.

Strachan House Christmas Fete 2019

Staff, residents, relatives and the local community came together to enjoy our Christmas Fete held in our home’s grounds.

We hosted a variety of activities throughout the day, including lots of stalls selling fun and festive items provided by our community, a tombola and raffle and even a visit from Santa, enjoyed by everyone who came to the event.

We all made sure everyone felt welcome and we were delighted to see different generations having fun together. Visitors enjoyed plenty of refreshments, such as minced pies and mulled wine, prepared by the catering team, who were hard at work making sure that a great time was had by all – it really was a team effort!

Elf on the Strachan House Shelf

A mischievous not-so-little elf took a break from helping Santa this week and paid us all a visit at Strachan House.

He toured our home, visiting one person to the next spreading his festive joy and we all enjoyed a Christmassy tea party before he had to return to the North Pole.

We are so enjoying all the festivities on the run up to Christmas, thank you for coming to see us!

'Tis the season for good cheer and creativity !

The Christmas spirit was flowing as we hosted a Wreath Making class for residents and the public to come along to.

Our home was filled with warmth and magic as our guests created beautiful, festive pieces and enjoyed a wee tipple and some mince pies whilst sharing loving memories with each other of Christmases gone by.

We all had a great time and everyone was delighted with their wreaths and we were touched to receive such high praise from visitors about our home, staff and all of our wonderful residents.

We'll look forward to seeing everyone for more workshops and fun in the future!

Our friends at Blackhall Primary School

We have a special, long standing relationship with nearby Blackhall Primary School and love our visits.

Residents and pupils have been getting together every fortnight for activities such as arts & crafts, singing, dancing and sharing stories of the past and present, allowing residents to take a trip memory lane and make new friends.

This week, pupils and residents were making sure flying visitors to Strachan House’s beautiful gardens are well looked after this winter by making lots of birdfeeders together.

Many pupils who visit us do not have grandparents and time spent getting to know our residents is very valuable to them. We are also warmly welcomed at the school for seasonal events, including the upcoming carol service which we’re so looking forward to. Being part of the community is an essential part of life here and we cherish our friendship with Blackhall Primary School dearly.

Recognition at Canine Concern Scotland Trust Awards

Canine Concern Scotland Trust was formed in 1988 to promote research into the therapeutic value of dogs to patients or others isolated from normal association with pets. Every year they hold their annual awards to celebrate Therapets, their owners, organisers and fundraisers. This year we're delighted to see Rhum and Mum Jocelyn receiving the praise they so deserves.

18 delightful doggies from all over Scotland were nominated for the Spencer Award for Therapet of The Year. The Spencer Award acknowledges the magnificent work our furry, four legged friends do and this year the voting was extraordinarily close with Therapets separated by only a few points. Rhum came in at an admirable fourth place and proudly attended the ceremony at the Marriot Hotel in Edinburgh to pick up his prize.

We also made sure Rhum's Mum knows how important she is to our home and presented Jocelyn with a beautiful bouquet here at the home.
