Strachan House Care Home in Edinburgh

Our nursing home is a purpose-built care home in Edinburgh, near Craigcrook Castle. It provides 24-hour nursing care, in addition to dementia care, for older people. Public transport links are good and there are shops nearby. The home is set in well-maintained landscaped gardens and there is a dedicated Memory Lane Community for people living with dementia.

The Care Inspectorate is the independent regulator for the care sector in Scotland. On their most recent inspection visit in March 2017 they rated Strachan House 'Excellent' for care and support. It is rated ‘Very Good’ in all other categories. They said, ‘Strachan House Care Home provides excellent standards of care and support in an attractive, comfortable and safe environment,’ ; ‘Care and support was well organised, person centred with continuity provided by a team of motivated staff who knew the residents and their relatives/carers well,’ ; ‘Staff from all departments worked well together to given an excellent provision of meaningful activities, which included both group and one to one activities, and recognised the importance of physical activity. This helped to support residents to maximise their mental and physical wellbeing,’ and: ‘Management and leadership at the service were very effective. A comprehensive range of quality assurance systems monitored all aspects of service provision.’

At Strachan House we pride ourselves on the quality of the care we provide, the standards of hospitality on offer and the wide range of activities and social contacts we promote.

We are always happy to see visitors if you would like to drop in.

Our Team

The dedicated and experienced team are passionate about providing quality care to each individual living at the home.

Arthur Brannagan

General Manager

Hi, my name is Arthur and I am the General Manager here at Strachan House.

For the vast majority of the past 25 years since I qualified as a Mental Health Nurse, I have worked at a senior management level with various health and social care teams. The pursuit of excellence, true person-centred care and meaningful change are my driving motivations. I have had three passions throughout my career: care of the elderly (specifically dementia care and support), palliative care and mental health / learning disability health and social care provision. Each of these has shaped the practitioner I am today.

Much of my career has been based within the care home sector and I have more than 10 years senior management experience in the sector, having worked with some of the most dynamic, motivated and highest rated services available in Glasgow and Aberdeen/Aberdeenshire.

In 2005, I changed the focus of my experience to the mental health / learning disability / autism sector and held managerial roles with a social care provider for 7 years as Area Manager for Glasgow and then Regional Quality Manager for Scotland and NE England before becoming a Hospital Manager with a specialist service. It was during this time that I completed my BSc in Interprofessional Practice.

I returned to the care home sector in 2015 with a renewed passion for excellence, forward thinking and motivational care delivery. Having recently relocated back from Aberdeen, my most recent post was as General Manager at a very successful and well-established service within the city’s west end where we achieved Grade 6s with the Care Inspectorate and had a reputation for excellence, attention to detail and creative care delivery that enabled residents to achieve a sense of well-being and lead full and active lives.

I am passionate about the delivery of a quality service that strives to break the mould and question our perception of what a care home is and should be. I have heard many positive things about Barchester and I am excited to be joining a team that values every person as an individual and is not content to be average. When I visited the service, I was struck by the warmth and welcoming approach of the team here and am excited to be a part of their future and to see how, together, we can maintain an excellent reputation.

I believe that everyone deserves to be treated with the utmost dignity and respect, where they can receive a bespoke service tailor made to their own requirements and expectations; and throughout my time I have worked as part of teams that have made a difference to the lives of the people in our care, alongside their families and friends.

Fiona Crow

Music Therapist

I joined the team at Strachan after qualifying as a music therapist in 2008 and I visit the home on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

We have two weekly music group sessions that are popular with residents who enjoy participating through singing, playing an instrument or dancing.

I also work closely with the physiotherapy staff, providing musical support for the exercise classes, as well as combined one-to-one sessions where appropriate.

There are some residents who I see regularly on a one-to-one basis and this sometimes involves singing with them by their bedside.

I really enjoy my job and continue to be amazed at the positive impact music can bring in a care home setting, particularly to those living with dementia.

Receptionist

I have worked in Strachan House for 7 years. I first started as a carer, and then moved onto activities, which I really enjoy. I started working on reception about 8 months ago and with any new role you are forever learning. Now I have the best of both worlds as I work 3 days on reception and 2 days on activities.  This allows me to spend some quality time with the residents. Out of work I like art, music, yoga, and spending time with my family at the weekends.
