Activities at Southerndown Care Home

Our specialist activities staff are committed to organising a mix of activities and events for residents and the local community to get involved in, including trips out to local places of interest in our minibus and visits from entertainers and musicians. It is important to us that each individual who we support can get as much from these as possible, so we try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests and capabilities as best as possible, and encourage them to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can.

Cathy Wheeler

Activity Co-ordinator

I have been with the team at Southerndown since 2023

People ask me what I enjoy about my job and the answer is easy... 'the people'. Its the small things that make the difference every day, seeing people smile and seeing someone respond positively to interaction. We offer a great life enrichment programme at Southerndown and every day is different but enjoyable.

In my spare time I like to spend time in the garden, I enjoy sewing but mostly love spending time with my grandchildren

Life at Southerndown Care Home

Pumpkin Carving

This Halloween, making our own lanterns to decorate the home driveway and our garden terraces. The residents at Southerndown enjoyed getting messy with pumpkin carving they looked amazing at night.

Baking at Southerndown

Here at Southerndown, we have so many esidents who are amazing bakers. We thought that we would put our talents together and produce a really stunning Wheatsheaf Loaf, and also make some very tasty rolls to have with our lunch. These were all a great successes, and we were very pleased with the results. We can’t wait for our next baking club session!

All Things Autumn

Autumn is one of our favourite seasons, and we thought we would set up a display in our lounge.

Our favourite things about autumn are the leaves changing colour – a dazzling display of gold or crimson leaves is one of the most defining features of autumn.

We had so much fun in the making and we used leaves that we had made, and also pine cones we found outside when we went for a walk around the grounds. We are very pleased with the finished display. What a perfect way to celebrate all things autumn!

A Doll's House

Here at Southerndown, we are very lucky to have a very special, handmade dolls house on display, created by our very talented Receptionist, Ruth.

Ruth decided to spend her time in lockdown creating her very own doll house from bits and bobs she found around her home.

Ruth kept everyone at Southerndown updated with her progress, which we were so excited about. As soon as it was completed, Ruth brought it in for us all to enjoy.

World Photography Day

Here at Southerndown we thought it would be nice to celebrate World Photography Day, but with so much to learn, see and share we thought that we would enjoy this over a week.

We decided to ask our amazing staff for photos of when they were younger to make a 'Guess Who' board for the residents to see if we could guess who is who. This was so much fun and everyone really enjoyed looking at the lovely baby pictures of our staff and putting a name to the face.

The residents also enjoyed sharing their favourite photos with each other and talking about why they are favourites. All of the photos we looked at really put a smile on everyone’s faces.

Make a Wish

One of our residents here at Southerndown wished that we could have an indoor herb garden, so that’s exactly what we did, and we now have a herb garden in the lounge. The herbs we are growing are mint, basil, parsley, thyme and oregano. We are very excited to watch our seeds grow and have been all lending a hand to water them.
