Activities at Sherwood Lodge Care Home
Our Activities Coordinator is constantly striving to mentally and physically stimulate those we support by organising group and individual activities for anyone and everyone to participate in. We have regular outings in the mini bus to nearby places of interest including local garden centres and parks as well as musicians and entertainers. We also hold bingo evenings which are helped out by our residents families. We also have a local pub nearby which the residents enjoy visiting from time to time for a spot of lunch or sitting in the gardens in the summer time. We try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests as best is possible. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can.
Emma Powers
Hi, my name is Emma Powers; I am the Activities Coordinator here at Sherwood Lodge.
I have worked in the care sector for over two decades; prior to this I was a soldier in the UK Armed Forces where I gained exceptional powers of communication, organisation and teamwork. During my time as a carer I have gained my NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care and have been employed as a Senior Carer. I chose to switch professional roles to activities as I find supporting both residential and dementia residents very rewarding.
I have been employed within Barchester for over three years, I love working for this company and am really excited to continue to care for all of its residents and their families.

Life at Sherwood Lodge Care Home
Theatre inspired virtual talk
We had a lovely time joining Angela Cobbin for a theatre-inspired virtual talk about her book ‘My Name is Not Wigs’. ‘My Name Is Not Wigs’ is the ultimate read for fans of witty behind-the-curtains memoirs, especially those with a penchant for the bright lights of stage and screen: tears and accolades aplenty!
Getting to know me
‘Getting to know me’ booklets are our method to getting to know everything that makes our wonderful residents who they are. As well as telling us food and drinks likes and dislikes there is a section called ‘what makes me , me’—try answering this yourself, you have to dig deep, remember and find the essential piece of reminiscence. The answers residents or families give make some amazing stories and that will lead to a special activity.
Pet therapy
From the challenges over the last two years as a result of the pandemic our residents at Sherwood Lodge have found comfort in hugs and cuddles with their furry animal friends, rabbits, dogs, cats, sloths, squirrels, pandas and good old Teddy bears to name but a few. Every single furry friend has a name and we are all looking forward to our PET therapy visits over the coming months.
Virtual tour of Cliveden
We were treated to an amazing live virtual talk and a tour of Cliveden, hosted by the house and chapel guides from the National Trust Talks Service.
The volunteers kindly gave us a tour around the famous house taking an in-depth look at Cliveden’s many stories from its 350 year history, from devilish dukes to scandalous headlines and boundary-breaking garden designs to political notoriety.
Starting with the Duke of Buckingham who built the first house in 1666, our residents met the key owners who helped shape the house and its gardens including the Orkney, Sutherland and Astor families.
The talk was accompanied by an illustrated presentation which brought to life these individuals and showed how their influence at Cliveden still continues today.
Birthday celebrations
Many happy returns Mary from all the residents and staff at Sherwood Lodge. Mary and her sisters enjoyed a delicious tea party prepared by our chef Jo.
Jigsaw race
