Activities at Overslade House Care Home

Our activities team is dedicated to organising a variety of events and activities and adapting them to suit the capabilities of those we support. Our goal is to improve quality of life by providing activities that are tailored to residents' own interests.

At Overslade House, we encourage local people and businesses to participate, as well as our staff and relatives, in order to keep them involved as part of a wider community. We strive to enhance the quality of both mental and physical stimulation through weekly minibus excursions, PAT dogs, quizzes, Zumba classes, arm chair line dancing, musical entertainers, pamper sessions and much more.

We definitely have something for everyone!

Julie Bateman

Activities Lead

Hi, my name is Julie, and I'm the lead Activities Lead here at Overslade House. I've been an entertainer for over 25 years which has given me a great foundation for meeting people from various backgrounds, and has also helped nurture my social skills.

I love animals, and have two Dachshunds of my own who, like me, love meeting new people. I'm looking forward to bringing them in to meeting all our lovely residents here at Overslade.

I'm a bit of a social butterfly and enjoy visiting National Trust locations, attending the Theatre, singing and dining out. Over the years I've even been an 'extra' on TV!

Living life to the full is my motto, and I wish to instil this in all our residents, whatever your ability there is something new to learn or try. Life is for enriching and enjoyment. I look forward to getting to know you and your loved ones. We are always open to new ideas, if you'd like to contact me please call the home on 01788 522577 or email me direct on overslade.activities@barchester.com - New entertainers always welcome.

Strawberry Cheesecake

The Overslade House cookery club have been busy in the kitchen again this week making cheesecake!

The ladies decided they would give it a go and all pitched in to create a beautiful cheesecake topped with strawberries. They really enjoy getting together to whip something up and have a natter on a Tuesday. Next week they start their salt dough creations for harvest festival.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

Even though it’s not quite the plans we had in mind we still went ahead with our Macmillan coffee morning today 25th September, 2020. Our in-house event raised money in support of Macmillan Cancer, we had a lovely time drinking tea and eating cake with our residents.

We want to send a big special thank you to ‘John Dwyer Bakery Ltd’ #johndwyerbakery who kindly donated the cakes for this morning’s event. With all that’s going on at the moment, these ‘gifts of kindness’ mean so much to our residents and staff.

Twiddlemuffs Donation

Today we have received a bag of “Twiddlemuffs” for our Memory Lane residents, donated from a regular customer of The Stag and Pheasant public house in Rugby. We are extremely grateful for such a thoughtful donation.

Age UK explains; “They provide simple stimulation for active hands while promoting increased flexibility and brain stimulation. Many people with dementia have found twiddlemuffs reassuring and comforting. They provide a source of visual, tactile and sensory stimulation at the same time as keeping hands snug and warm.”

Sylvia, one of our amazing carers, showed the residents the new “Twiddlemuffs” and they all couldn’t believe how much time and work would have gone into making them! Sending a big thank you from all at Overslade House.

National Day of Arts in Care Homes

Today we are celebrating the National Day of Arts in Care Homes. We teamed up with the residents at our sister home; Cubbington Mill. Residents from both homes enjoyed chatting and seeing each other via Skype, whilst getting arty, they worked together on a joint poster design which has been brought together, entitled 'Creative Communities'.

We hope that when thing’s return to normal that our residents will be able to meet their new found friends and exchange lockdown stories! Thank you Cubbington Mill for a wonderful morning, filled with new friends and art!

101st Birthday Celebrations for Lily!

Celebrations have been in full swing at Overslade House care home in Rugby, as one of its residents turned 101 in style.  Lily is a much loved resident here at Overslade House. She moved to Rugby in the 1950’s and worked for many years at Boots the Chemist on the High Street. She has one daughter; Barbara Rose who to lives in Rugby with her husband Peter. We’d like to thank them both for all their help and for providing the beautiful old photos of Lily.

Lily said that she had a wonderful day, and couldn’t believe how lucky she has been. She wants to send thanks to everyone that has been involved in her very special day. Lily received over her birthday age in cards and messages from the Rugby community, and beyond. Our activities coordinators will spend the next few days reading all the lovely cards and messages to Lily.

We want to send a special thanks to Daisykins Nursery who sent birthday cards from the children, and all the people who sent cards from the community and Cross Countries’ Radio for the special shout out for Lily.

Lily was also surprised and honoured to have a poem penned personally for her by the Resident Ambassador; Gerald Waterfield at our sister home in Cubbington, who posted his wonderful ‘Poem to Lily’ to Facebook earlier today.

Lily was joined in our café by staff and a handful of home based friends as we all raised a glass in honour of her landmark birthday, around a special birthday cake made by one of the home’s chefs, Dario Mozzettini.

We asked Lily what her secret to life was and she said “to enjoy life and have kind people around her.” We are honoured to have spent today celebrating with Lily and wish her all the happiness in the world!

Tuesday's Cookery Class

Today’s cookery class was headed by our Resident Ambassador; Anne. She managed to take us all down memory lane by making a traditional pudding. “Anne’s Trifle”, a recipe that Anne has made throughout her life, included custard made from scratch, jam smothered sponge and freshly whipped cream topped with hundreds and thousands. The smells were amazing and the trifle tasted fabulous! Thanks Anne.
