Activities at Overslade House Care Home

Our activities team is dedicated to organising a variety of events and activities and adapting them to suit the capabilities of those we support. Our goal is to improve quality of life by providing activities that are tailored to residents' own interests.

At Overslade House, we encourage local people and businesses to participate, as well as our staff and relatives, in order to keep them involved as part of a wider community. We strive to enhance the quality of both mental and physical stimulation through weekly minibus excursions, PAT dogs, quizzes, Zumba classes, arm chair line dancing, musical entertainers, pamper sessions and much more.

We definitely have something for everyone!

Julie Bateman

Activities Lead

Hi, my name is Julie, and I'm the lead Activities Lead here at Overslade House. I've been an entertainer for over 25 years which has given me a great foundation for meeting people from various backgrounds, and has also helped nurture my social skills.

I love animals, and have two Dachshunds of my own who, like me, love meeting new people. I'm looking forward to bringing them in to meeting all our lovely residents here at Overslade.

I'm a bit of a social butterfly and enjoy visiting National Trust locations, attending the Theatre, singing and dining out. Over the years I've even been an 'extra' on TV!

Living life to the full is my motto, and I wish to instil this in all our residents, whatever your ability there is something new to learn or try. Life is for enriching and enjoyment. I look forward to getting to know you and your loved ones. We are always open to new ideas, if you'd like to contact me please call the home on 01788 522577 or email me direct on overslade.activities@barchester.com - New entertainers always welcome.

World Maritime Day

Residents and staff at Overslade House in Rugby gathered together on Thursday 30th; World Maritime Day to reflect on the role of seafarers, in safety, maritime security and environmental protection with the 2021 Theme: Seafarers at the core of shipping’s future.

We started the day with a virtual CGI tour of the Titanic, exploring what it actually looked like to the passengers before its demise. Each area brought to life with photo overlays giving the viewer a true vision of its splendour. Many of our residents have been on cruise liner holidays but all agreed; RMS Titanic would’ve been an impressive sight to see. [https://youtu.be/QgaiU4cVfo8]

Residents across all Overslade House communities enjoyed an arts session, spending time colouring printed sketches of various seafaring vessels. Their finished designs will be on display for all to enjoy, a couple aptly named; SS Barchester and Overslade Oceana!

As we have a couple of ex-naval personnel within our home, during the afternoon we watched a documentary on one of the World’s largest Naval Air Carriers; USS Nimitz [https://youtu.be/c3hFT3mtdbE]

Following the viewing, two of our gentlemen residents recounted their naval days. The first joined at the tender age of 17 as part of the HMS Illustrious crew before leaving at 21 to continue his Navy career on land, joining the New Zealand Air Force to look after the aircraft.

The other, Robert Brockway, unbeknown to each other also worked on HMS Illustrious for 6 months. Robert worked as a Fleet Air Arm Electrician and during his career path he was promoted to Lieutenant. He continued in the Navy travelling the world for 20 years! Spending 18 months in Borneo on HMS Albion. He was also stationed on HMS Peregrine where he too worked on aircraft. [Photos of Robert Brockway attached]

Activities Lead; Julie Bateman said; “It’s been a real privilege to hear these gentleman’s stories today, learning all about their naval exploits and individual roles on these amazing ships. The whole home is very proud of them both and all they have done in their earlier lives for the protection of others at sea and on the land.”

Violeta Baesu, General Manager at Overslade House, said: “We have a number of residents with personal ties to the military, and we made sure to use the occasion to thank them for their dedication to the country, and pay respect to those who lost their lives in the line of fire.”

On Wednesday of this week the residents of Overslade House were treated to a wonderful afternoon’s performance from Tickled Pink Productions

Our residents were welcomed aboard Tickled Pink's Cruise Ship Show stopping at exotic ports around the world and packed with on board entertainment.

With quick costume changes into glitzy outfits, their performance was a non-stop 60 minute round the world tour, full of fun and frolics! They sang many of our residents' favourite songs we could sing along to, making it fun for all.

H3 Fitness Fun

Keeping fit and active is so important for our residents’ wellbeing, particularly as the days become shorter, and we have little opportunity to venture outside with the unpredictable British weather conditions.

David from H3 Fitness always manages to get our residents up and having fun with his array of interesting apparatus, from balls to batons and even a gigantic parachute!

They enjoy and look forward to every session.

Harvest Festival with Lifting the Spirits

Our Harvest Festival took place on Tuesday 28th with readings and song from our friends from ‘Lifting the Spirits’. Our residents enjoyed stories and joined in with the uplifting tunes performed by Angela and John.

We’re truly ready for the autumn season and the bounty on hopefulness it brings.

Big thank you to the Gift of Years volunteers and friends of Overslade House for providing such a lovely hand crafted Harvest display.  As Harvest is a time for sharing, we have placed a food donations box to the front of our home. We are collecting non-perishable items to share with those in need.

Please feel free to pop over and place your items in the box, the Gift of Years volunteers will ensure everything you provide is distributed to the vulnerable in our local communities.
