Activities at Overslade House Care Home

Our activities team is dedicated to organising a variety of events and activities and adapting them to suit the capabilities of those we support. Our goal is to improve quality of life by providing activities that are tailored to residents' own interests.

At Overslade House, we encourage local people and businesses to participate, as well as our staff and relatives, in order to keep them involved as part of a wider community. We strive to enhance the quality of both mental and physical stimulation through weekly minibus excursions, PAT dogs, quizzes, Zumba classes, arm chair line dancing, musical entertainers, pamper sessions and much more.

We definitely have something for everyone!

Julie Bateman

Activities Lead

Hi, my name is Julie, and I'm the lead Activities Lead here at Overslade House. I've been an entertainer for over 25 years which has given me a great foundation for meeting people from various backgrounds, and has also helped nurture my social skills.

I love animals, and have two Dachshunds of my own who, like me, love meeting new people. I'm looking forward to bringing them in to meeting all our lovely residents here at Overslade.

I'm a bit of a social butterfly and enjoy visiting National Trust locations, attending the Theatre, singing and dining out. Over the years I've even been an 'extra' on TV!

Living life to the full is my motto, and I wish to instil this in all our residents, whatever your ability there is something new to learn or try. Life is for enriching and enjoyment. I look forward to getting to know you and your loved ones. We are always open to new ideas, if you'd like to contact me please call the home on 01788 522577 or email me direct on overslade.activities@barchester.com - New entertainers always welcome.

Life at Overslade House Care Home

Residents Embrace their Inner Child on World Children’s Day

Staff and residents at Overslade House care home had a wonderful time reminiscing about their childhoods on World Children’s Day, which took place on November 20.

Overslade House donated Christmas Presents and also cakes made by our lovely in house Chef Jo to The Children’s Christmas Wish List. General Manager, Violetta said “Overslade House are pleased to be able to help make a Christmas Wish come true and help the Children feel happy whilst having treatment in hospital”

Celebrated annually on November 20, World Children’s Day is supported by Unicef and aims to help save children’s lives and defend their rights in 190 countries around the world.

World Kindness Day

Staff and residents at Overslade House care home had a wonderful time feeling the love on World Kindness Day, which took place on November 13.

The staff and residents got into the spirit of the day, making lots of kind gestures, such as giving kindness cards, residents created cards for keyworkers who helped to keep us afloat during the pandemic and also paying compliments to each other, eating lunch with someone new, holding the door open for those behind you. They proved that being kind to each other really does make the world a better place.

Celebrated annually on November 13, World Kindness Day focuses on the idea of people being nicer towards each other for the day by carrying out simple acts of kindness for someone else. The day’s ultimate goal is to increase the value that we as a society place on kindness and to make it a bigger part of our daily lives.

General Manager, Violeta Baesu, said: “As a care home, it is our duty to cultivate a kind and nurturing environment 100% of the time, but it was great to see residents really getting into the spirit of things and going out of their way to help each other out. We all really liked the kindness cards created and also common courtesy to each other – it was such a simple, yet effective way to make others happy at the home.”

John, a resident at Overslade House Care Home, said: “Being kind to people isn’t hard, but it was really nice to see others being extra kind and making little gestures to put a smile on peoples’ faces – just the simple act of paying someone a compliment can really make their day.”

Bewitching Tricks and Spooky Treats

Our home was a den of ghoulish activity as the home’s spooky Halloween theme.

Residents and staff got in to the spirit of things by decorating the home/creating Halloween decorations, pumpkin fauna flower arrangements hosting a themed Halloween cinema afternoon with ghoulish treats, and decorating a Halloween tree with their own creations

General Manager, Violeta Baesu said “The home looks fantastic with all the decorations we’ve all had a brilliant time.”

Tracey, resident at Overslade House Care Home said: “It has been such a fun day. I really enjoyed creating ghosts and witches hats out of egg cartons and putting them on our Halloween Tree.  Resident June admired their pumpkin fauna flower arrangements and said “Oh aren’t they beautiful”.

Armistice Day

Overslade House Care Home in Rugby, Warwickshire commemorated the signing of the Armistice Day agreement on the day that the guns finally fell silent. They joined the rest of the United Kingdom in holding a two-minute silence at the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day, of the eleventh month.

As well as marking Remembrance Day by wearing poppies and watching the televised service from The Cenotaph, and also slides of the National Arboretum in Staffordshire, residents took part in therapeutic activities creating poppies for their Remembrance Service and were entertained later that day by the Karen West Forties Show with War songs bringing back many memories for residents

John, a resident at Overslade House Care Home, said: “It is very important that we keep the memories of those who fought alive and that we also think about those involved in conflicts around the world today.”

Resident Robert said “My father was awarded the George Cross medal, unfortunately we haven’t got it anymore it was lost”.

Violeta Baesu, General Manager at Overslade House Care Home, said: “We have many residents with personal ties to the military and many who have experienced conflict either at home or abroad so it was important to us to mark Remembrance Day and honour the contribution of everyone involved in the World Wars and in subsequent conflicts.

World Animal Day

Staff and residents were having a whale of a time when they celebrated World Animal Day on 4th October.

World Animal Day is an annual global event to celebrate all animals across the world. It aims to raise awareness of the importance of animal welfare and endeavours to raise standards for all animals around the globe.

Residents had a wonderful time learning about all different kinds of animals and insects, their preferred food and their habitats, with a visit from John and Animals for Parties. John brought with him an owl, a bearded lizard, rabbits, Guinea pigs, various insects and other reptiles.

World Mental Health Day

Staff and residents have been marking World Mental Health Day by taking part in a range of different activities to promote good mental health.

World Mental Health Day took place on Sunday 10th October. The idea behind the day is to encourage people around the word to talk about mental health in general and how we all need to look after our mental health by talking about things and sharing our challenges. The theme this year is ‘mental health in an unequal world’ which aims to recognise the effect of the pandemic and how it has affected people’s mental health.  World Mental Health Day is also an opportunity to ask for help if you are struggling.

The staff and residents got into the spirit of the day by having a discussion about mindfulness and the importance of staying positive, taking the time to talk about their feelings and sharing their challenges. Residents also recited a poem entitled Don’t Quit, as it was also World Poetry Day on 7th October.
