Activities at Mortain Place Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Alex Leftley

Activities Coordinator

I was working in the print trade when a friend of mine became very unwell and I had to find a nursing home for her. Due to the dedication of the staff, my friend had another 18 months and I was able to take her out after being house bound for many years.

I felt that I wanted to do a job that made a difference and became a carer. I went back to school and redone my GCSE,s and then went onto do my level 3 diploma and am always enhancing my skills and knowledge. I came to Mortain Place as a senior carer on Normandy Gardens and worked my way up to Community Lead. I have chosen to move to the activities team to help support the life enrichment programme and help improve the life experience’s of our residents.

Australia day

Residents helped us to celebrate Australia Day throughout the home.

While packs full of factoids, crosswords and word searches were shared with residents in their rooms, other residents enjoyed traditional Aboriginal colouring and painting.

For our residents living in our Memory Lane community, we had some Australian jokes and a quiz.

Making bird feeders

In preparation for the Big Garden Bird Watch, we have had a fun afternoon making our own tempting bird feeders.

We are hoping to attract some hungry recipients so that we can spot and identify them as they tuck in to their favourite snacks.

Burns Night Capers

Resdients had a lovely day and evening celebrating Burns nights this week.

Staff and residents at the home were involved in a number of activities such as poetry to mark the Scottish institution, including giving the time-honoured address to the ‘Great chieftain O’ the pudding’ race’ – the Haggis.

General Manager, Chris Turnbull, at Mortain Place, thought it was a perfect occasion to celebrate an evening steeped in age-old tradition as well as getting in a spot of Scotch whisky tasting, singing with a medley of Burns’ songs and a rendition of Auld Lang Syne.

She said: “Our residents have enjoyed a hearty meal of Scotch broth, Haggis with neeps and tatties all prepared by our stellar Chef, Mia."

One resident said: “I enjoyed acting out the part of the whisky-bearer and asking everyone to raise a dram to toast the Haggis.”

Whats on the tray??

We tested our residents memories today with a game of "Whats on the tray" whereby we put some random items on a tray which the residents study for 60 seconds. The tray is then taken away and the residents have to jot down every item they can remember. We had a lot of fun with this and were impressed with how many of the items our residents managed to remember.

This is a team game so it is always interesting to see who remmebers what and it makes it a bit more fun to have a competitive element to the game.

Pre lunch brain teasers

There were many laughs shared during a crossword and word search session today before lunch. Our residents love getting involved in the many different activities we have each day but sometimes you can't beat a couple of good brain teasers.

World Religion Day

This week we celebrated World Religion Day. World Religion Day is celebrated every January on the third Sunday of the month. Its aim is to promote understanding and peace between all religions, encouraging people to learn about other faiths and their followers. The first such day was observed in 1950.

We had many discussions about what religion means to our residents, how is has affected their lives and how they have got involved in various religious activities throughout their lives which created a lot of very interesting stories.

We also tried diffferent foods that are synonymous with particular religions. In the pictures you can see residents tucking into Jewish favourite Halva which was made by our wonderful kitchen team.
