Activities at Lochduhar Care Home

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Home celebrate National Fish & Chip Day

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Lochduhar in Dumfries had a fantastic time celebrating National Fish & Chip Day on Fryday 4th June, surely one of the best days of the year!

The homes hospitality team whipped up a selection of different flavoured batters for residents to try along with some home-made tartare sauce and mushy peas, everyone had a great time guessing the different batter ingredients.  The sun was shining so residents took to the garden to eat their fish and chips in paper cones with wooden forks in time-honoured tradition.

We also were delighted to receive a donation from our local Tesco at Cuckoo Bridge, who gave us, tubes of different flavoured Ice creams, some sweet flavoured sauces and some cones. The resident all enjoyed their ice cream and our homemade ice cream trolley.

Hereford Cathedral tour

We had a lovely time joining the team from Hereford Cathedral for an exciting virtual session.

We enjoyed a glimpse of this spectacular building and its treasures in a series of short pre-recorded videos. From the stunning gardens which lead down to the River Wye, to the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library.

It was wonderful to learn more about the history and beauty of Hereford Cathedral.

National Italian Day at Lochduhar

Residents at Lochduhar celebrated National Italian Day with a themed feast of delicious foods especially prepared by the homes hospitality team which was served with crisp mouth-watering Italian wines to the delight of all.  In preparation of the event, residents created decorations as part of their arts and crafts and listened to Italian music throughout the day and were able to share stories as they reminisced about places they had visited.

Inside Knowsley Safari Park

Staff and residents at Lochduhar were treated to an exciting live streaming tour of Knowsley Safari, hosted by Engagement Assistant, Verity Dann.

Knowsley Safari has been welcoming visitors for 50 years since it opened in July 1971.  Situated in the Knowsley area of Merseyside, the safari park is home to 750 animals on a 550 acre site, it boasts the longest safari drive in the UK.

Verity’s workshop took a peek behind the scenes at Knowsley to find out what it is really like to work in such a demanding yet rewarding world.  Residents discovered what a day in the life of a keeper entails from feeding time with the giraffes and meerkats through to training sessions and everything in between.  Verity explained some of the conservation projects that Knowsley Safari is involved with and how this is positively affecting some of the world’s most endangered species.

A blooming display!

Staff and residents at Lochduhar in Dumfries  were treated to an interactive virtual floristry masterclass courtesy of Master Florist, Michal Kowalski, from Blooming Haus.

Blooming Haus started with a small pop-up shop in Chelsea.  They have since blossomed spectacularly on to the floristry scene as ‘floral engineers’, carving themselves an outstanding reputation as one of the UK’s most innovative floral design studios. The company is the vision of Master Florist, Michal Kowalski and his business partner, Michael Dariane. The pair bring a completely fresh approach to floristry and their ambition to push the boundaries of traditional floristry has laid the foundations of Blooming Haus’ success to date.
