Activities at Lancaster Grange Care Home

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Intergenerational visits from Claypole School

We extend a warm welcome to our friends from Claypole Church of England Primary School.

The children kindly brought handmade Christmas cards to our community coffee shop where are residents were patiently waiting, they read stories to our residents, and sang Christmas songs together.

Our resident Margaret was delighted when they sang 'Happy Birthday' to her and made her day extra special.

The children then took the time to visit the residents' rooms around our home, singing Christmas carols and sharing Christmas cheer and joy.

The children proudly sang Christmas carols along our corridors, spreading happiness and joy to all.

This had such a powerful impact, especially on our nursing community of Thoresby.

Our intergenerational friendship with Claypole School is truly wonderful, and we are grateful to the children, teachers, and parents for making yesterday afternoon such a joyous and memorable occasion.

Here, at our home, Lancaster Grange, today, we have incorporated and recognised International Men's Day into our daily life enrichment programme.

This morning we all enjoyed a fun-filled morning with Simon from Waleys Dart Days.

We had such an engaging, entertaining, social and physical game of darts incorporating and enabling residents with a variety of needs to have fun and enjoy themselves.

We continued our day with a cold yet enjoyable visit to our local pub, The Tawny Owl as always welcoming our residents to enjoy a drink in our local community, building friendships together.

On this day, International Men’s Day, we just wanted to recognise all the wonderful men in our lives: our grandfathers, fathers, husbands, sons, brothers, cousins, friends and neighbours.

Visiting Southwell Minister for a fantastic experience seeing - The Longest Yarn 2

What a fantastic community outing yesterday afternoon for our residents here at Lancaster Grange, with a pre-arranged visit to Southwell Minster.

We have two trips planned this week and our first was to see the exhibition of The Longest Yarn 2. This is the second year running of visiting the Minster at Southwell. This year’s exhibition is made up of 80 panels of "wool art", each 1m long.

This year the focus is on what it was like in Britain between the declaration of war on 3 September 1939 to VE Day on 8 May 1945. This magnificent exhibition includes significant events such as the King’s Speech, D-Day, The Blitz, the bombing of major cities, Britain coping with the war, the Home Guard, the Women’s Land Army, rationing, and much, much more.

We were wowed with the display and thrilled to be able to share this moment together.

Residents have enjoyed a variety of Life Enrichment music activities today with Activity Bank Assistant Sharon here at Lancaster Grange.

Clarinetist Linda played for our Sherwood residents in our community café, starting the week off on a high note. Linda has been visiting us for over 7 years, and we are looking forward to her singing for a fun group joining us in October.

Memory Lane residents held their ‘Book Club’ reading and reminisced about ‘The Allure of Rock and Roll’, a dementia-friendly short story along with percussion and instruments.

And this afternoon we welcomed our friends from Fernwood Amateur Dramatic Society for ‘Singing for the Brain’. Residents of all communities came together for a sing-a-long. They visit us fortnightly, and as a way of saying thank you, we have invited them to our pizza and prosecco night in September.

We love music and all of its rewarding benefits!

Diwali celebrations here at Lancaster Grange

Diwali celebrations here at Lancaster Grange

Our residents enjoyed listening to Care Assistants Carrie and Prashant, about their experiences of celebrating Diwali yesterday at our Songs of Praise service.

Recognising the festival of Light, Prashant, a practising Hindu, originally from Nepal, explained how he will be celebrating over the next five days, as from today.

Diwali is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row of clay lamps that Indians light outside their homes to symbolise the inner light that protects themselves from spiritual darkness. This festival is as important to Hindus as the Christmas holiday is to Christians.

Care Assistant Carrie, shared her experiences of living in India and seeing the Diwali evening parades. Residents carried on this morning in Creative Crafting, decorating glass jars with tissue paper and embellishments to be lite.

Recognising #999 Emergency Services Day here at Lancaster Grange

What a fantastic morning for our residents here at Lancaster Grange on #999Day.

Tuesday 9th September, the UK comes together to mark Emergency Services Day, also known as 999 Day. This is a national day dedicated to recognising and celebrating the extraordinary work of the NHS and emergency services personnel across the country.

We had the pleasure of welcoming Keil and today’s crew from Newark Fire Station. Each time they visit Keil and the crew put our residents at ease about fire safety. Meeting new residents on each visit and remembering others they have met before is a wonderful touch. Today, recognises nurses, police officers and firefighters to search and rescue teams and call handlers. Almost 2 million people work and volunteer in the emergency services and NHS.

Amongst them are 250,000 first responders, those who run towards danger to protect and save lives. We wanted to share and recognise this day and say a huge thank you to every one of us all here at Lancaster Grange. We are so proud of the community link we have with Newark Fire Station and love how they value and inspire our residents each time they visit.

Two of our gentlemen residents were thrilled to be helped into the driving seat of their fire engine this morning, something they never imagined they would do!

What a fantastic morning.

Our Activities team prepare and engage a service with hymns, poems, prayers and discussions, with different diverse topics, to enhance our spiritual wellbeing.

Today Cherilyn held a service recognising ‘National Tree Week’, which is celebrating its 50th year.

The residents discussed how trees appear in the Bible, in many scriptures and the significant meanings behind them.

We discussed our appreciation for trees, why they are so important in the ecosystem and to humans.

Cherilyn brought items from home for a ‘show and tell’; Ebony, Petrified wood, Jasper and Jet.
And what do they all have in common? They all were once a tree!!

We had a fantastic morning here at Lancaster Grange with our very first ‘Darts Tournament’ with Waleys Dart Days.

Our residents came together in our Sherwood Lounge to test their dart skills, encouraging cognitive coordination. Not many of our residents had played darts, but all got into the spirit of the game, inviting staff members to join in.

Elsie, Ann and Ian were surprised with their throwing skills. Ann was delighted to gain a bulls eye. Gerald was the only darts veteran in the group and was thrilled to be able to continue a much loved hobby and interest.

We would like to thank Simon for a great morning and congratulations to Gerald for winning the trophy.
