Activities at Emily Jackson House Care Home

Our activities team continues to offer a wide range of activities to both mentally and physically stimulate our residents. Our activities include one to one shopping, group outings in our minibus, and regularly attending our local church and bowling club. We also enjoy the entertainment from the musicians who come and visit us as well as our PAT dog. We have a range of activities so residents with all abilities and talents can join in activities and social gatherings. We encourage families and volunteers to share the joy with us by taking part in our social events as well.

Rainbow Painting's

Our residents are enjoying painting rainbows as an 'Art Therapy' activity for the key workers and the NHS. Art can be so relaxing and therapeutic.

International Nurses Day 2020!

Happy International Nurses Day to all of the amazing and dedicated nurses working on the frontline of this battle and in the community! Everyone at Emily Jackson House wants to say a huge thank you to all of the nurses, everywhere in the world, for being such great people and for being kind and dedicated in difficult times for others. Nurse’s work and compassion is often under estimated by the population and in times like these, nurses have to put themselves and their families at risk to help and save others; every day should be International Nurses Day!

Amabele Cheng, General Manager, brought all of our staff a selection of chocolate cake and ice-creams to enjoy and to celebrate International Nurses Day 2020! Amabele awarded each of our compassionate and hardworking nurses, with a certificate and a goodie bag full of items hand made from the community, sweet treats and nursing stationery.

Members of the local community have been kindly making face masks and delivering them to us to distribute to our staff, to help keep them safe. The masks have lots of different colours and designs and they look great, thank you!

'What's in the bag?'

The residents love to play the game “what’s in the bag?”  The mystery and surprise is very exciting and makes everyone smile.

We place different objects in bags, for example; a toothbrush, cello tape, knickers, socks, spoons and a rubber duck. The residents have to put their hands into the bag and, without looking, guess what’s in the bag!

This is an excellent exploratory activity for residents living with dementia, as it can be very sensory for them, as they have to use their touch sense to work out what the object is. The residents and staff will often fall around laughing at some of the residents guess’!

Therapy Dolls

The residents have been enjoying getting to know our 2 knew friends, Annie and Emil, the empathy dolls.

Empathy dolls are specially designed to seem like real babies to individuals living with dementia. They have heavily weighted bottoms and features that reassemble a real baby.

The residents love to cuddle them, hold them, play with them and show them around. A particular favourite of this resident is to hum and bounce the baby in her arms, patting her bottom, to sooth her. It is really amazing to see the joy and warmth that the dolls bring to the residents.

Pen Palling with Sevenoaks Primary School

We have linked with Sevenoaks Primary School to start a Pen Pal Scheme for a few residents and a few students. We have 10 students and 10 residents who pass weekly letters between one another. They write about their lives, hobbies, favourite things and will send pictures and drawings that they have done. Jane, the teacher running the pen palling at Sevenoaks Primary School, has said how excited the students get when they receive their letters each week. We are so pleased that we can offer and give such joy to the children, and also our residents. Each week the residents wait for their letters to arrive, and they will have already planned what to write, so send them back the same day!

We are looking forward to continuing this relationship with Sevenoaks Primary School into the future, and we are looking forward to introducing the residents and children around Christmas time, when they come to sing for us!

A beautiful gift

Peggy received a beautiful and delicious bouquet of chocolate from her granddaughter. She was thrilled and kindly offered them around to the staff for their kindness and hard work during this difficult time. Peggy had never seen so much chocolate and didn’t know where to start, but we can happily say she is munching her way through it gradually!
