Activities at Emily Jackson House Care Home

Our activities team continues to offer a wide range of activities to both mentally and physically stimulate our residents. Our activities include one to one shopping, group outings in our minibus, and regularly attending our local church and bowling club. We also enjoy the entertainment from the musicians who come and visit us as well as our PAT dog. We have a range of activities so residents with all abilities and talents can join in activities and social gatherings. We encourage families and volunteers to share the joy with us by taking part in our social events as well.

Life at Emily Jackson House Care Home

Pen Palling with Sevenoaks Primary School

We have linked with Sevenoaks Primary School to start a Pen Pal Scheme for a few residents and a few students. We have 10 students and 10 residents who pass weekly letters between one another. They write about their lives, hobbies, favourite things and will send pictures and drawings that they have done. Jane, the teacher running the pen palling at Sevenoaks Primary School, has said how excited the students get when they receive their letters each week. We are so pleased that we can offer and give such joy to the children, and also our residents. Each week the residents wait for their letters to arrive, and they will have already planned what to write, so send them back the same day!

We are looking forward to continuing this relationship with Sevenoaks Primary School into the future, and we are looking forward to introducing the residents and children around Christmas time, when they come to sing for us!

A beautiful gift

Peggy received a beautiful and delicious bouquet of chocolate from her granddaughter. She was thrilled and kindly offered them around to the staff for their kindness and hard work during this difficult time. Peggy had never seen so much chocolate and didn’t know where to start, but we can happily say she is munching her way through it gradually!

Beautiful Flower Arrangements

Many of our residents are artistic and can create beautiful pieces of artwork; flower arranging is a popular activity among these residents, they are all a dab hand at producing gorgeous vases of flowers that have a variety of colours and that complement each other very well. Once the residents have made their flower arrangements, they like to place them around the home, to refresh the look around the building.

Our Café, Dining Rooms and communal areas are always blooming with flower selections that the residents have put together; they really know how to make a house feel like a home. We are often complimented on our choice of flowers, but have to politely correct and explain that it is all the residents!

We have plans with a local artificial flower arranger/expert to create flower pieces, such as; mirrors, boxes and room decorations, once lockdown has finished. The residents are very much looking forward to this, and have some great ideas for personal touches for the home and their rooms.

Community Leaves Rainbow Artwork for Staff

A local family were seen using chalk to draw on the Stay Safe Rainbow to the opposite wall to our drive way at Emily Jackson House. The family of 4 did not want care homes to be forgotten and reminded us that people value our work, by drawing a beautiful rainbow, customised with our home name on it!

Every day, the staff drive or walk into work and see the rainbow, and do the same when they leave. It is a constant reminder of the hard work that everyone at Emily Jackson House is doing and how grateful the community are; it also shows their support to us.

We would love to reach out to the family who did this for us, but sadly we have no contact details for them. If you generously drew this for us then please get in contact as we would love to thank you properly for your kindness.

Writing Home to Loved Ones

The current situation is challenging for many, not being able to see friends and family and for some being trapped inside their homes. We are combatting loneliness in the elderly and are helping our residents keep in contact with their loved ones, not just by video call and the telephone, but through the good old fashion method of pen and paper!

Our residents regularly receive letters from friends and family, but may struggle to write a letter to reply. We have been helping them write letters and cards back, by scribing for them or helping them to read their first letter and to think of a reply. We will then stamp and post the letter for the resident.

Contacting loved ones

So sometimes its the traditional form of social media that mean the most, receiving and writing to loved ones. Our team understands how important communication is and do all they can to assist our residents with this.
