Activities at Drummond Grange Care Home
We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.
Katie Nicolson
Katie Nicolson is our Head of activities here at Drummond since August 2023 beforehand she worked as an activity assistant in the home for two years. Before coming to Drummond Katie has worked in many care roles over the years and studied Psychology and Sociology at Queen Margaret’s University and was awarded a Degree of Bachelor of science in Psychology and Sociology at the start of 2022. Katie loves being part of the Activity department here at Drummond Grange and bringing new and exciting opportunities and experiences to the residents. When she’s not at work Katie is a local Girl Guide leader and youth leader for her churches youth group.

Life at Drummond Grange Care Home
Garden visits begin at Drummond
Residents and staff have welcomed back visitors to Drummond Grange, in Midlothian. Lorraine from the Activity Team and residents had made a ‘Welcome Back’ banner and hung it outside the front of the home for everyone to see as they came to visit. The day started off rainy so the gazebos came in handy but by the last visit of the day the sun was beaming down on the residents and their visitors. Everyone that received a visit today was so happy to see their relatives after such a long time apart, there was huge smiles all round.
30th Birthday Celebrations
One of our younger residents celebrated his 30th birthday recently. Thomas (Tam) has been living at Drummond Grange for 5 years and staff always wanted to do something special for his big 30.
Thomas is a huge supporter of Celtic and staff had planned to take him on tour of their stadium, Parkhead, in Glasgow. As they were unable to go, they got him a Celtic top with his nickname ‘Tam’ and the number 30 on the back, which he loved.
There had also been plans for a big party, but they had to settle for a smaller gathering just now and hopefully will be able to celebrate in style soon!
Bags of Appreciation
The family of a resident on our Memory Lane unit made up little rainbow gift bags for the staff, they wanted to show their gratitude for the staff that have taken great care of their loved one over this difficult period. The gift bag included a small perfume, a bath bomb, perfumed ‘love heart’ soap and a hand cream. The bath bomb and hand soap were made by the residents granddaughter. The staff were overwhelmed by such a thoughtful gift, one of the carers said “We do this job because we care, but it’s so nice to see how much the families appreciated us at this difficult time”.
National Cream Tea Day
To mark National Cream Tea Day today at Drummond Grange we decorated our ‘Jolly Trolley’ and offered residents a delicious scone, with the option of either raspberry, strawberry, bramble or blackberry jam and also some cream to top it off and of course a cup pf tea to go with it! Some residents chose to have their scone in the morning in the garden while the sun was out. The Jolly Trolley will visit all units so residents can enjoy a scone with a cup of tea and have a blether with staff.
Birthday Bash
Margaret has just recently came to live at Drummond in our Memory Lane unit and, unfortunately, due to the current circumstances, her family have not been able to see her in her new home in person.
It was Margaret’s birthday on the 28th May and her family were disappointed that they would not be able to celebrate with her, as they have done every year. The staff decorated the unit for Margaret and made sure to make the day special for her and also for her family. They took videos and photos of Margaret and sent them to her daughters so they could share in her special day.
Margaret’s daughters were very happy with what the staff had done for their mum and could not thank them enough. One of Margaret’s daughters said she was crying happy tears because of the effort the staff had made for her mum's birthday.
Fun in the Sun
Residents got into the garden to enjoy the sunshine, which is something we don't see a lot of in Scotland. They enjoyed a 'Movement to Music' class with the physio and finished off with ice cream. Everyone really enjoyed being out in the fresh air.
