Activities at Denmead Grange Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we won’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our activities team is dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Lisa Harris

Activities Coordinator

Being Head of life Enrichment isn’t just a job, it’s a passion.

My time with the residents has and will always be an honour and pleasure.

Finding out their interests and hobbies, so I can tailor the weekly planner is such a great thing to do, as this means lots of chats over a good cuppa! But it also means that I can get to know them personally and get to understand a part of their past, so I can continue to help them experience their interests in this next phase of their lives.

A truly rewarding role, where I can be part of and contribute to something meaningful. All I hope for, is to make this journey for both the residents and their families, as restful, easy and enjoyable as possible. Then I know I’ve done my part.

World Book Day

As of the beginning of February, our Furzeley community came to together to start a book club. In line with National Storytelling Week, our residents made a decision on a book and began the first chapter: 'Sam’s Letters to Jennifer' by James Patterson, a tale full of love, devotion and heartache! We had amazing readers who loved to read aloud for the club to hear. We had some excellent reviews. Our next book, which will be read in March, will be decided in our book club review meeting!

Birthday Celebrations

One sunny Wednesday, we celebrated Jean’s birthday with a lovely lunch prepared by our Head Chef, Andy. Jean had a virtual video call with her family in the morning so they could wish her a happy birthday. Jean opened her presents from her friends and family, and was delighted and felt very spoilt.

Mince Pie Making

We pulled up our sleeves and floured our hands for a mince pie making afternoon! This is something our residents would usually do every year, and we don’t like to break tradition. Our mince pies were topped with a beautiful, shortcrust pastry star and they tasted yummy.

3D Snowflake Crafts

These intricate crafty snowflakes make great decorations for our home, and the residents here at Denmead Grange really enjoyed making them! They are now hanging gracefully above us in our hallways, making them even more festive than before.

Christmas Baking

We dusted our tables, powdered our rolling pins and coloured our fondant ready to decorate our Christmas cake.

Four residents joined in the dining area to complete the 3-tiered masterpiece, and we all think they did an amazing job!

Lloyd, our Activities Coordinator, certainly learnt a lot while helping out. Our Holly cake will be entered into Barchester’s Annual Christmas Cake Competition.

The Festivities Begin

The end of this month saw us push November out of the way to introduce some festive cheer.

Our residents enjoyed a full weekend of Christmas activities whilst we decorated the entire home. Our 10ft tree stands tall in the bistro and can be seen from outside.

The home looks wonderful!
