Activities at Cubbington Mill Care Home

Our teams are trained to enrich the lives of residents through stimulating the mind, body and soul, and taking the time to learn about each person to ensure everyone receives support that adds enrichment to their life. The activities encourage interaction on a one to one basis, in small groups, in large groups and some are designed for the whole home including staff to be involved in.

We are registered with the National Activity Providers Association (NAPA) which ensures we are able to achieve and continually progress to enhance the quality of life for those we support in the home. We provide entertainers such as singers, musicians, magicians, puppeteers, poets and dancers. We also have regular exercise classes and arts and craft classes. Relatives and visitors will be able to see what me make in these classes on display around the home. We have regular trips out on the mini bus to visit garden centres, enjoy high tea, visit the butterfly farm and spend the day at the zoo with a picnic. We encourage the local community, schools, colleges and relatives to come and join us for activities, tea and cake and to visit to share their skills as much as possible.

Staff from across the home are always willing to help and share their knowledge and skills across a whole range of activities we have had everything from carers preforming Bollywood style dancing to cooking classes from the chef. We feel activities are a vital part of the residents lives to ensure they are stimulated mentally and entertained.

Rose Tucker

Activities Coordinator

Hi, my name is Rose, and I am the activities coordinator at Cubbington Mill!

I have been working in care since I was 17 and very passionate about my role, always trying to do bigger and better. I received an additional role in 2024 as Regional Buddy. I now support 6 sister Barchester care homes in the region. I feel very privileged to meet new colleagues and residents from all walks of life through my career at Cubbington Mill and at my Buddy homes.

I hope we can all make some lovely memories together! I LOVE to find out about residents' interests & hobbies through tools like the “Getting To Know Me Booklets”. I’m passionate about residents living life to the full and creating joy in our home and throughout the region.

Activities and Events Partnerships

As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies

Fruit Kebabs Sale

Rose has taken part in a fruit kebab sale to raise money for Myton Hospice. Rose will be skydiving for Myton Hospice on Saturday 26th April, and because of this fundraising event, has now raised all the money needed! Residents Pat and Gisela, their relatives, staff member Angela and friends were all very supportive and were there to cheer on Rose and wish her well.

Rose said: “Taking part in this sale has been a huge amount of fun and everyone at the home has been behind me all the way. It’s for such an important cause. I’m very glad to be able to do my bit to raise further awareness and money for the charity. Residents can’t quite believe what a thrill seeker I am, for willingly agreeing to jump from a plane. It’s certainly made them all laugh! ”

Rose raised a grand total of £46 in total £471, by selling fruit kebabs and receiving donations which has all been donated to Myton Hospice.

A wish fulfilled!

For resident Pat, known as 'Smiley Pat', it's the 'simple things' in life to keep her happy. Pat simply wished for a garden centre trip with a lovely warming coffee, so that's exactly what Rose and Evie did. Evie is completing her college placement hours at Cubbington Mill on Thursdays.

Evie and Rose wandered around the garden centre with residents Pat, Patsy and Stan. They all enjoyed a game of dominoes, luxury hot chocolate and spreading the love with a homemade heart shortbread biscuit!

Pat thanked Rose for her kindness in creating a special morning. On a separate note, we will absolutely be returning to Smiths Garden Centre in Bagington, as their service was warm, welcoming, accommodating and, most importantly, 5 stars all round!

Resident Ambassador Fulfilment

Resident Ambassador Cheryl, wished on her star for a trip to Coventry Cathedral, and although we were promised an Organ Recital, we didn't quite get that, but had an extra special chance to reminisce together.

Resident Queenie told her story to residents Stan and Cheryl of The Queen's visit and distribution on Maundy Money in the 60s, (we managed to find photos online of this event). Cheryl told residents of her time at primary school where all the children paid a penny for the stained-glassed windows. These very pennies have been placed into the aisle. All the residents roamed the beautiful Cathedral in awe, lighting candles for loved ones no longer with us. A very special afternoon indeed.

Residents left the trip over the moon to have actually not heard the organ but each other’s memories instead! We start the 80-day countdown when we return for the organ recital (fingers and toes crossed)!

Australia Day!

We all marked Australia Day in style with Australian-themed activities, including a virtual tour down under, of Sydney Opera House and Sydney harbour.

We also looked at Aboriginal art and, of course, had a Zoom video call with our lovely Laura, who emigrated there last year with her family. Residents gathered in the communal lounge alongside staff who sent Laura their love, which we all really enjoyed!

Resident Ambassador Cheryl, showed Laura the Koala bought for her all the way from Australia. And of course, no celebration is complete without some Australian tunes and a quiz. What a fantastic day!

It's the Year of the Snake!

The Chinese New Year is associated with several myths and customs. The festival was traditionally a time to honour deities as well as ancestors within China; regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the New Year vary widely.

Traditionally, every family would thoroughly clean their house, symbolically sweep away any ill fortune to make way for incoming good luck. Windows and doors may be decorated with red paper-cuts and couplets representing themes such as good fortune or happiness, wealth, and longevity.

To celebrate the Chinese New Year, a festival that marks the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar, we enjoyed a creative session of DIY dragons and beautiful lanterns.

We enjoyed music from Greater China and watched last year’s celebrations while discussing the animals associated with the Chinese zodiac. We enjoyed eating some traditional Chinese food prepared by the Peri Chef Ian. It was a fun day for everyone.

National Activity Providers & Professionals Week

National Activity Providers & Professionals Week is an annual event to support activities professionals and thank them for the many different activities they provide for residents and patients.

Each and every member of the team at Cubbington Mill offers unique, tailored activities and entertainment to the residents every single day. They always go above and beyond their role and for this everyone at the home is truly grateful.

As part of the celebrations, activities staff were treated to a beautifully decorated reception, for everyone to admire with certificates, cakes and prosecco to take home and enjoy later. Family and friends arrived throughout the afternoon to join in the fun with staff and residents.

Visitors took part in a Creative Mojo arts & crafts session, movement to music with Mick from G-fitness and finally, a quiz where residents answered questions about Rose, Marie and Glenda.
