Activities at Bedewell Grange Care Home

Luckily the weather did not stop us potting the beautiful plants we bought for our garden.

With the help of Trish, Cathy and the residents managed to fill over 20 pots with a variety of sensory plants.

From curry plants and lavender, to petunias and geraniums; the residents have throughly enjoyed the experience of smelling and learning about them all. Thank you ladies for your wonderful gardening skills! We can not wait for our next session

Today marked the day we welcomed back entertainers in the home, and who better than to mark the occasion than Kayley Cares Vintage Singer!

For our ‘Not VE day’ celebrations, residents and staff were absolutely delighted (and emotional at times) with her beautiful sounds... and we had a right old knees up! Afterwards the residents were treated to traditional scones with jam and clotted cream, finished off with a Sherry. It was the most wonderful afternoon!

As part of Barchester’s Life Enrichment Programme, team members and residents at Bedewell Grange enjoyed an exciting virtual talk, generously hosted by Five Sisters Zoo.

The residents had the opportunity to explore and learn more about the animal life at the zoo and the important conservation, rescue and education work carried out at the grounds of the zoo.

Five Sisters Zoo was officially established in 2005 with just a small collection of rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, and pigs. Since then the zoo has grown into an exciting collection of over 160 different animal species from all around the world.

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Bedewell Grange care home in Hebburn were treated to a virtual tour of the wonderful underwater world of SEA LIFE London Aquarium, hosted by Senior Curator, James Wright and his expert team.

SEA LIFE London Aquarium is home to more than 300 species and 4,000 creatures, including Gentoo Penguins, Sea Turtles and Seahorses, which are cared for by its dedicated team of 15 Aquarists. The shark tank alone is one million litres in volume and six metres deep and is home to five species of sharks – Sand Tigers called Bungle and Zippy, a Grey Reef Shark, Nurse Sharks, Tawny Nurse Shark and a shiver of Black Tip Reef Sharks as well as a Bowmouth Guitarfish called Betty.

This week we welcomed our family members back into our home. It has been an emotional week for our residents and their families after inviting named family members back into the home, we have caught some very precious moments between these mothers and daughters.

Kneading the way as we celebrated real bread week, staff and residents at Barchester’s Bedewell Grange had a fantastic time celebrating Real Bread Week, surely one of the best weeks of the year!

Over the course of the week, overseen by activities coordinator, Charlotte, residents kneaded, proven and baked a selection of different breads from granary loaves to stottie loaves. All different types of breads were attempted, some more successful than others, but all were a great source of fun and anticipation to see the outcome of their collective baking efforts. Residents shared their baking stories from younger years along with various family tips!

Acting General Manager, Gail Donaldson, said: “It wasn’t just the residents that were excited when we found out there was a Real Bread Week, the eyes of the staff lit up too! Who doesn’t love freshly baked bread?  We have all had a great time trying out new recipes and adding different flavours and ingredients, we’ll be applying for Bake Off next!”
