Activities at Ashlar House Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Rita Green

As the Community Engagement Lead and Lifestyle Coordinator, I will be spending time with each resident and their loved ones to build a detailed picture of each individual, so that each person’s stay with us is as meaningful as possible.  Although I have been working within this field for many years, thanks to the uniqueness of each resident, I am always enjoying new experiences in my role. My goal is to create an activities programme that caters to the capabilities of residents, including, but not limited to, individual and group activity.

I've spent the past few years forging strong relationships within the community and developing a pool of talented individuals that can support our in-house team to bring out the best in those we care for.

As we never stop growing and changing, it is important that we maintain an up-to-date Getting To Know Me booklet. With your help, the activities scheduled for your loved ones will be as relevant and enjoyable as possible.
I’m very much looking forward to working with all of you.

North Weald Airfield Museum

Residents at Ashlar House were treated to a special visit from Peter C. Gardner, Chairman of North Weald Airfield Museum. Peter shared fascinating stories about his life, his dedication to historical preservation, and his long career in public service. His talk sparked lively discussions, as residents shared their own memories and experiences, creating a wonderful sense of connection and nostalgia.

Before his involvement with the museum in 2003, Peter served as an elected councillor for the London Borough of Havering for 30 and a half years, including a term as Mayor from 2002 to 2003. One of his most treasured memories from this time was meeting the late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and having the honour of hosting her for lunch.

His visit was both inspiring and engaging, leaving a lasting impression on everyone at Ashlar House. Peter’s passion for history and community service continues to bring people together, ensuring that important stories from the past live on for future generations.

Afternoon fun!

This afternoon, our residents enjoyed a variety of activities! Some took part in Barchester Virtual Bingo, where our work experience team felt the pressure, hoping for our home to win a line or even a full house! One resident, despite not being able to see, was full of excitement, enjoying the atmosphere and anticipation.

Meanwhile, in the other lounge, residents stayed active with our weekly Health & Fitness session with Glenn, keeping everyone engaged and moving.

A wonderful afternoon filled with fun, energy, and laughter!

Valentine's Day Celebrations!

Ashlar House was filled with warmth, joy, and togetherness as we celebrated the spirit of love this Valentine’s Day.

Our special event began the day before with the Barchester Live Virtual Valentines Treat Decorating, where residents eagerly prepared for the celebration. With creativity and enthusiasm, they beautifully decorated freshly baked biscuits, adding a personal touch to each sweet treat in anticipation of our Valentines afternoon tea.

As the morning festivities unfolded, we welcomed the talented Pete George for a heart-warming live performance. Music, laughter, and joy filled the air as residents and guests enjoyed an uplifting session, making the day even more special.

The celebrations continued in the afternoon with an elegant High Tea, featuring a stunning selection of cupcakes and biscuits lovingly prepared for the occasion. It was a delightful way to share sweet moments tasting the delicious treats, and embrace the love and friendships that make Ashlar House such a cherished place.

At Ashlar House, we treasure these special occasions that bring residents, families, and friends together, creating lasting memories and celebrating the bonds of love and community.

Meaningful Moments!

As an activities' coordinator, I have been spending time with each resident and their loved ones to build a detailed picture of each individual, so that each person’s stay with us is as meaningful as possible.

Thanks to the uniqueness of each resident, I am always enjoying new experiences in my role.

The goal is to create an activities programme that caters to the capabilities of residents, including, but not limited to, individual and group activities.

As we never stop growing and changing, it is important that we maintain an up-to-date Getting to Know Me booklet. With your help, the activities scheduled for your loved ones will be as relevant and enjoyable as possible.

That's not all! Our Memory Boxes are a special way for residents to reminisce and share their stories whether in a one-on-one conversation with our staff or as part of a group exchange. These personal keepsakes help spark memories, encourage meaningful discussions, and strengthen connections between residents and those who care for them.

By embracing each resident's unique journey, we create an environment where everyone feels heard, valued, and celebrated.

I’m very much looking forward to working with you all.

Hot Chocolate Day

At Barchester Ashlar House, we believe in making every moment special for our residents, and what better way to bring warmth and joy than by celebrating Hot Chocolate Day!

Our residents, families and team indulged in rich, creamy hot chocolate, topped with a variety of delicious toppings of their choice from fluffy mini marshmallows and chocolate shavings to caramel drizzle and, of course, a generous swirl of whipped cream for those who fancied an extra treat, a splash of chocolate liqueur was added for a delightful twist!

The event was set up in our relaxed lounge, where all could enjoy their treats while socializing with a touch of jazz music softly playing in the background, or in the comfort of their own rooms for those who preferred a cosy, quiet moment.

It was a wonderful day filled with smiles, laughter, and the comforting taste of a classic winter favourite. Here’s to many more heart-warming celebrations at Ashlar House!
